Todays Gospel invites us to strip away much of the imagery and meet the raw human experience of this young woman who is blessed from generation to generation. The Gospel today tells us that Mary left her home town of Nazareth and went as quickly as she could to meet her cousin Elizabeth. She was actually fleeing her home town where she could have been stoned to death for being pregnant before marriage. The journey was not to the next village but one of some distance, presumably by herself and in the early stages of pregnancy. Mary, the pregnant virgin, finally arrives at Elizabeths. In her old age and declared barren, she is now pregnant. This is the encounter of two social outcasts. Furthermore, Elizabeth has been trapped in a house with the mute Zechariah. We can only imagine the joy of silence broken and the conversation that took place between these two pregnant women, Mary and Elizabeth. Both women find blessing in their encounter. The passage of todays Gospel is often referred to as the visitation. It may well provide a model for much of our own activity in coming days. Many of us will make journeys of visitation this Christmas. Perhaps there are some like Elizabeth who are house-bound and isolated and who we need to put on our visitation list this Christmas. It might even be as simple as a phone call. Gods blessings can be experienced in the simplest of human gestures and in encounters, particularly with those at the edge. - Fr Peter St Michaels Church 58 Orwell St Blacktown Office Hours: Sunday 8.30am - 11.30am St Patricks Church 51-59 Allawah St, Blacktown Office Hours: Mon - Fri: 9am - 4pm Tel : 9622 1125 A/H : 9621 3146 Fax: 9671 6425 Email: [email protected] bPoint payment system Follow the links on our website. We acknowledge the Darug people, the traditional custodians on whose land we worship.

Our Parish Mission Statement Mary, Queen of the Family Parish is a welcoming, diverse, multicultural, Catholic community.

We seek: to live, teach and share the joy of the Gospel; to grow as disciples of Jesus through prayer, witness and action and to respond to the needs of the family in the Blacktown community and beyond.

BLESSED IS SHE! Words are important. When our newly formed parish was named, some thought the title was Our Lady, Queen of the Family rather than Mary Queen of the Family. So what is the difference? In a feudal world of lords and ladies, Mary became Our Lady. In an age of burgeoning monarchies, Mary was bejewelled and crowned Queen of Heaven.

In many ways much popular Christian art has been a disservice to our comprehension of Mary of Nazareth. Today’s Gospel invites us to strip away much of the imagery and meet the raw human experience of this young woman who

is blessed from generation to generation.

Mary, the pregnant virgin, finally arrives at Elizabeth’s.

The passage of today’s Gospel is often referred to as the visitation. It may well provide a model for much of our own activity in coming days. Many of us will make journeys of visitation this Christmas. Perhaps there are some like Elizabeth who are house-bound and isolated and who we need to put on our visitation list this Christmas. It might even be as simple as a phone call. God’s blessings can be experienced in the simplest of human gestures and in encounters, particularly with those at the edge. - Fr Peter

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON: Cf. Is 45:8 Drop down dew from above, you heavens, And let the clouds rain down the Just One; Let the earth be opened and bring forth a Saviour. FIRST READING: Mi 5:1-4 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps 79:2-3. 15-16. 18-19. R. v.4

Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

SECOND READING: Heb 10:5-10 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Lk 1:38 Alleluia, alleluia! I am the servant of the Lord: may his will for me be done. Alleluia! GOSPEL: Lk 1:39-45 Mary set out and went as quickly as she could to a town in the hill country of Judah. She went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. Now as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She gave a loud cry and said, ‘Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord? For the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy. Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.’ COMMUNION ANTIPHON: Is 7:14 Behold, a Virgin shall conceive and bear a son; and his name will be called Emmanuel.

Thank You Fr Luis would like to thank everyone for their kind words and well wishes for his future. He is very grateful for sharing your faith with him. Whilst originally he was heading to the parish of Winston Hills, Fr Luis has now been appointed as Assistant Priest in the Parish of Marayong. Fr Luis leaves for Colombia on Christmas Day and will be back in the first week of February. I would like to thank you for your kind words, wishes and gifts at this Christmas time and as I prepare to leave the parish. While the past few weeks have been rather exhausting, they have also provided time for living with and sharing ministry with Fr Regie. I have found in him a listening, reflective and strongly pastoral man. In his role of moderating, I am confident that the parish will be richly blessed. Peace and good things Regie! Fr Peter

We pray for our Churches and the communities who have grown in these spaces.

This weekend we remember the 39th anniversary of the Dedication of
