Black Friday: The concept

When it comes to shopping, people would do anything to get their favorite clothes, gadgets, shoes, jewelry at a lower price. This is why some smart retailers have found a new way to increase their incomes and to satisfy people`s desire to be able to buy designer clothes and shoes or other things that they could not usually afford.

In the United States, Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day, which marks the opening of the Christmas shopping season.

On this day, major shops open their doors extremely early, most usually often 4 a.m., or even earlier, and people have the opportunity to buy things at a very low price. Retailers offer these promotional sales in this period of the year, because it is known that, during the Christmas season, people have the tendency to buy more than in the rest of the year.

This theory is proved by the amount of buyers that crowd every single year, since 2005, staying hours and hours in the front of the shops, waiting for the owners to open the doors.

Black Friday is, according to the news reports the most crowded and busiest shopping day of the year in the United States, thanks to the great promotions that retailers offer and to the need of people to buy a lot during the Christmas season.

Even it is not actually a holiday Black Friday has begun to be known as a very important day for the Americans. Proof is the fact that on that day, some non-retail employers agreed to give their employees the day off, because shopping on Black Friday deals 2012 has become a need and a right for the American people.

In the past years, the concept of Black Friday deals 2012 extended in other countries, too, as Canada, the United Kingdom, and some other European countries. Even if shops owners were skeptic at the beginning, every year people become more and more interested to buy on that day, and this is the reason why lots of retailers extend beyond normal hours in order to increase their profits, or to simply keep up with competition. So, some retailers open on Thanksgiving Day, and the promotional sales begin at midnight.

The Black Friday deals is extremely promoted in the United States. Thanks to the amplitude that this day had over the years, it has been created a strong competition between major retailers. That is way every single year they try to find new strategies to attract lots of clients. So, usually, the shops owners offer to the buyers, besides the promotional prices, a bunch of free stuff. For example, in 2010, Toys 'R' Us offered to the clients free boxes of crayons and coloring books.

At first, most retailers objected to the use of a negative term, when describing the most important shopping day of the year. Still, the name is based on a very interesting concept, the “ink theory”, which says that in the financial records, loss is marked with red ink, and profits are shown by using black ink. So, according to this theory, Black Friday marks the beginning of the period when retailers have no longer losses and start to increase their profits.
