we all know Black Fridayasadayforbargainshopping;you can find some of theyear’sbestdealsforthethingsyouwantthemost, especiallyconsidering the date alwaysmarks the beginning of theholidayshoppingseason.Black Friday, something
that one could not reallyrefer to as a holiday, hasbecomeatraditionofsortsinAmerican culture; thousandsof Americans, oftentimeswhole families, participate inwaitingoutsideofmalls,wal-Marts, Best Buys, and manyother stores that participateinthesale. However, likealltraditions,
BlackFridayhasahistoryandorigin. Although there is noset date as to when the dayafter thanksgiving became a
retail frenzy, it was throughthe combined efforts of allU.s retailers during the 19thcenturyinordertosavetheirstores from further damageduringtheGreatdepression.According to an article
by Jennifer rosenbergtitled “How Fdr Changedthanksgiving”, in 1939,during theGreatdepression,U.s. retailers beggedPresident Franklin d.roosevelt to change the dateof thanksgiving from thefourththursdayofNovembertothethird.this was after the retail
dry Goods Association hadwarned Franklin rooseveltthat retail sales woulddrop, further worsening theeconomy, becauseAmericanswould most likely refuse tostart the holiday shoppingseason until the fourththursdayofthemonth.
Althoughrooseveltdidtryto change the original dateof thanksgiving, the changedidn’t stick due toconfusion, uproar frommany Americans, andmixedfinancialresults.in the end, all of
these events lead to thewidespread adherenceof most retailers to theunwritten rule that nostorewouldaggressivelyadvertiseorholdholidaysales until the Fridayafterthanksgiving.the term “Black
Friday” was coinedin the 1960’s and hasa variety of origins, including the fact thatmany Philadelphiapoliceofficersoftenusedittorefertotheextremecongestion of driversand pedestrians on thedayafterthanksgiving.
