ANNUAL REPORT
2014
The operations of all that comprise the BJCC are governed by the nine-member Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Authority Board of Directors. The Mayor of the City of Birmingham and President of the Jefferson County Commission serve as ex-officio members, with seven additional members appointed by the Jefferson County Legislative Delegation. The Board of Directors of the Authority provides policy oversight, strategic direction and fiscal control for the BJCC, Sheraton Birmingham Hotel, Westin Birmingham Hotel and Uptown Entertainment District.

GOVERNANCE
Reflecting upon the last few years, I’m confident they are years that will be marked in history as transformational - a period of time during which the BJCC laid the foundation for its next phase of success. Capping a development project just over three years in the making, with the City of Birmingham as our partner, the Uptown Entertainment District is now fully operational with seven exciting dining and entertainment options on the BJCC campus. The Westin Birmingham Hotel, certified LEED Silver and the only LEED certified hotel in the state of Alabama, continues to deliver strong revenue and occupancy results as well as receiving rave reviews from meeting planners and the corporate community.
The Arena and Concert Hall have enjoyed benchmark years, with crowd-pleasing concerts, sporting events and family-oriented performances delivering a wide variety of entertainment options for residents of the Birmingham area and beyond to enjoy. The highlights for the year have been many, but a few stand out, such as playing a key role in Birmingham hosting the 2014 Bassmaster Classic, a return visit by PBS’s Antiques Roadshow and hosting both the SEC Women’s Gymnastics Championship and NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships in the same year.
It’s also been a year of exciting strategic partnerships, beginning with our outstanding Uptown lineup of Texas de Brazil, Octane Coffee + Bar, Cantina Laredo, The Southern Kitchen and Bar, Mugshots Grill & Bar, Todd English P.U.B. and Bottle & Bone.
Additionally, initial work began on a capital improvement program targeting meeting and exhibit space throughout the BJCC. Moving into 2015, this work will begin to pay dividends as we improve the meeting experience and position the BJCC to be even more competitive as a meeting and convention destination.
None of these achievements would be possible without the vision and strategic leadership of the Board and the hard work and sincere dedication of our staff. The future is bright, and it is exciting to anticipate what the next few years will bring. I look forward to working with our dynamic team to further the BJCC’s role as a premier meeting and entertainment venue, while continuing to generate a positive economic impact for the Birmingham area.
Sincerely,
Tad Snider
Executive Director & CEO
A LETTER FROM OUR CEO
The BJCC has accomplished much in 2014. With the leadership of Executive Director & CEO Tad Snider, the dedication of our outstanding staff and the support and guidance of the Authority Board of Directors we’ve been able to complete a number of projects identified as instrumental for the future success of the BJCC.
The early success of the Uptown District and the availability of more than 1,000 hotel rooms in the immediate BJCC area since the Westin Birmingham has opened provides us with an attractive convention and meeting package. We will use this to sell Birmingham as a premier conference venue.
A year of strong fiscal results, well ahead of our budget forecast, has allowed us to begin planning for key capital improvements to our meeting and exhibit space and to plan for some targeted improvements in the Arena and Concert Hall. In 2015, we should complete additional enhancements to the BJCC. This will enable us to continue our success into the future.
We remain committed to our mission of providing industry-leading facilities for the benefit of our customers, stakeholders and the taxpayers to expand our community activity and economic development. We look to the future with great enthusiasm and we anticipate another year of success for the BJCC.

The BJCC and Uptown Entertainment district continue to communicate with their communities, customers and clients through an ever-expanding range of traditional and social media. The BJCC continued to use Facebook and Twitter to inform its expanding network of fans and followers of activities throughout the complex. The BJCC also launched a presence on Instagram and Pinterest during the year. During its debut year, Uptown used Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts to effectively engage a community hungry for information about the new culinary and entertainment options it brought to the area. Overall, the BJCC and Uptown nearly tripled their combined Facebook page “likes” and Twitter followers in one year.
The BJCC diverted 109 tons of paper, cardboard and aluminum from landfills during the year through recycling. One of the BJCC’s proudest achievements this year was being awarded LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for the new Westin Birmingham - the first hotel in Alabama to earn LEED certification. When you visit the BJCC, you’ll see our personnel moving around the site by a variety of energy-efficient means, including bicycles and electric vehicles. The BJCC continuously seeks new ways to reduce its environmental impact through changes in the way we use water and energy and conduct our business every day.

ENGAGEMENT
SUSTAINABILITY
In 1965, the Alabama Legislature created the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Authority, establishing the framework for what is now the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. In 1966, the Authority launched a national architecture competition to choose a design for the complex – a process that led to adoption of a plan by Philadelphia-based architect George Qualls. The first facility completed, the North Exhibition Hall, opened in 1971, followed in the next few years by the Concert Hall, Theatre, Arena and outdoor Piazza.
