Buzzword of the Month: non-tender 不換約

What does non-tender mean? 什麼是「不換約」?Transactions and trades in the MLB are commonly completed during the winter offseason. A team may decide to renew a player’s contract or non-tender him based on his performance the previous season, or injury concerns. If the club decides not to retain the player, it will announce this before the non-tender deadline. He then becomes a free agent and is allowed to sign a contract with another ballclub.

A Blossoming Romance?

D Doris T Tracy G Gina

D: Hey, girls. Do you have any good gossip?

T: Of course! Have you had a look at that new guy, Justin? He just came on board1 yesterday as a sales representative for network products.

D: No, I haven’t laid eyes on him yet. What about him?

T: We were just saying that he’s really cute!

G: Since you don’t have a boyfriend, maybe you two should get together!

D: What? Don’t be ridiculous! I don’t even know what he looks like.

T: We can change that.

G: There he is! (Pointing) He’s the one with the purple tie in that cubicle2 next to Mr. Chen.

D: Oh! Yes, he is cute, actually. Not bad. He seems quite tall and has a kind face.

Three coworkers are chatting around the hot water machine as they make tea.

T: Oh, you like him, do you? Maybe you should go over and talk to him right now. Or maybe you could just catch his eye and give him a flirtatious3 look.

G: I have an idea. Why don’t you walk by him in a sexy way and drop something by accident?

T: I know. How about I go over there right now and invite him over to meet you?

D: No! Don’t do that!

G: (Laughing) Calm down! I’m sure you’ll bump into4 him in the office sooner or later.

T: Yes, I think we’d better just let nature take its course.

The Lantern Festival: An Enlightening Experience

J Jim T Tony S Sue

J: OK. Put your thinking caps on. “This building may not always be the tallest, but it has more stories than any other.” What is it?

T: (Joking) That sounds a lot like my office building.

S: (Sarcastically)1 Ha-ha. Very funny, Tony. (To Jim) I’ll take a wild guess and say “a school.”

J: Close, but no cigar.† The answer is “a library.”

T: Aw, that makes sense now. All right, Jim, give us another chance. Hit us with one more riddle.

J: OK, I’ll take it easy on you. “When you don’t know what it is, it’s something. When you know what it is, it’s nothing.” What is it?

T: Um, I’ve got nothing. I’m stumped.2

S: (To herself) When you know what it is . . . (Suddenly) I’ve got it — it’s “a riddle.”

J: Well done! And the winner and new champion of this year’s Lantern Festival riddle contest is Sue!

T: I knew the answer, too. It was right on the tip of my tongue. Sue just beat me to the punch.

Tony and Sue are trying to solve Jim’s riddles.

J: You snooze, you lose, Tony. Now, according to tradition, the loser must treat everyone to drinks.

T: (Grumbling)3 All right, all right. I won’t be a sore loser.4 I’ll run down to the 7-Eleven.

(As Tony is leaving)

S: Fess up,† Jim. Is that really a Lantern Festival tradition?

J: No, not really, but don’t tell Tony that!

• What’s the name of that movie? Oh, it’s on the tip of my tongue!

1. put one’s thinking cap on 動腦筋思考;認真思考

• Bertie wasn’t sure what to get his wife for Valentine’s Day and realized he had to put his thinking cap on fast.

2. on the tip of one’s tongue ⋯⋯

• What’s the name of that movie? Oh, it’s on the tip of my tongue!

3. beat sb to the punch 搶先(某人)一步 • Otis had a great idea for the staff outing, but Nora

beat him to the punch.

To: Valued CustomersFrom: Lester ThompsonDate: February 21, 2010

Dear Sir/Madam,

Reddit Readers, Ltd. cordially1 invites you to the launch party for our new R-11 series e-reader. This event will be held in Meeting Room 102 of the Taipei International Convention Center March 14. We’re not far into 2010, but already this promises to be one of the launch events of the year.

As you’re no doubt aware, e-readers have taken off in a major way over the last couple of years. What makes the R-11 stand out from the rest is its unique scanning function, which allows you to upload your favorite texts and automatically group them by category. Other standout features include a voice-activated page locator and an auto-dictionary function. This really is not your run-of-the-mill2 reader. To see what all the fuss is about, be sure to join the party.

Champagne and cookies will be available from 7 p.m., with the main program commencing3 at 8 p.m. We will be showcasing the top three shorts from our movie competition, introducing the product, then holding a Q&A session with the series’s creator, Noddy Huang. There will also be a raffle4 with three brand-new e-readers up for grabs,5 and to round things off,6 cocktails and candy.

Places are limited, so RSVP as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. For more details, contact John Oswin at 07721-410-002, or e-mail [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you on the big day.

Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Thompson,

Thank you very much for your invitation to the launch party; I will definitely be attending.

The new R-11 looks very promising,1 and I think it could be something Top Tech would be

interested in stocking. So I am excited about seeing it in action2 and participating in the Q&A

session.

In the meantime, I have contacted Mr. Oswin regarding3 directions to the Taipei Convention Center,

but received an automated reply saying he was out of the office for the next two weeks. As I myself will soon be away on business, I was wondering whether you might be able to forward me a map, preferably4 in PDF format.

Hope to see you there in March.

Dear Mr. Thompson,

Many thanks for the invitation to the event. Unfortunately, I have a prior1 engagement2 on that

date, so I will not be able to attend.

Although I cannot make the launch party, we are always interested in new, innovative products like

this. I would therefore appreciate it if you could forward some specs3 or maybe a brochure4 to

give me a more detailed outline of the R-11 series. We could then possibly organize a meeting and

personal demo5 at some point in the near future.

Wishing you all the best for March.
