ANNUAL REPORT 2017 15 Schools and Colleges COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE Effective SY 2017-2018, the Silliman University College of Agriculture (SUCA) will be offering its latest degree program, Master of Science in Agriculture, major in Sustainable Agriculture and Agricultural Extension Management. The College also acquired various laboratory equipment and instruments through the third release of the P1 million CHED – National Agriculture and Fisheries Educational System (NAFES) Project financial grant for having been designated as National University/ College of Agriculture for Region VII. Graduates of Batch 2016 who took the Licensure Examination for Agriculturists (LEA) in October 2016 garnered a 70% passing rate, higher than the national passing rate of 30.89%. For the April 2017 LEA, the lone taker passed. The national passing rate was 31.55%. SUCA Faculty members presented their papers during the 5th International Conference on Nature Studies (ICONSIE) and 17th Annual Scientific Conference of the Philippine Society for the Study of Nature (PSSN) at Splash Mountain Resort in Los Banos, Laguna on April 19-21, 2017. Asst. Prof. Merlyn G. Buscato presented her paper on “Molluscicidal Potential of Mahogany (swietenia mahogani jacq.) Leachates against Golden Apple Snail (pomacea canaliculata lamarck)”, while, Associate Prof. Jose Edwin C. Cubelo presented two of his papers on “Risk Perceptions, Attitudes, and Risk Coping Strategies of Mango Farmers in Negros Oriental, Philippines” and Agricultural Knowledge Management in the Local Extension Services of Selected Masbate Municipalities, Philippines.” Agriculture students also attended the said conference and presented their own papers: Elline T. Macay on “Efficacy of Wild Basil (ocimum sanctum l.) as an Organic Attractant against Fruit Flies (bactrocera philippinensis l.) Infesting Bitter Gourd (momordica charantia l.)”; Janmark E. Ahig on “Effectiveness of Three Botanical Extracts Against Diamondback Moth (plutella xylostella l.) Attacking Cabbage (brassica oleracea var. capitata l.)”; Nicole Ness Jecca B. Carin on Insect Pest Incidence of Ampalaya (momordica charantia l.) Grown with Wild Basil (ocimum sanctum l.) as an Attractant”; and, Fatima B. Biyok on “Relationship between Live Weights and By-products Weights of Broilers (gallus gallus domesticus l.)”. Sixty-three graduates of agriculture from different colleges and universities in the Negros Island Region (NIR) and some parts of Mindanao (e.g. Zamboanga, Dipolog, Dapitan, Davao) attended the refresher course in agriculture for the Licensure Examination for Agriculturists (LEA) examinees conducted by the SUCA faculty. COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Biology This school year, the Biology

Department partnered with three

differentinstitutionsforresearch

training, collaboration, and proposal.

These institutions are Osaka

UniversityforButterflyconservation

with in cooperation with SU’s Biology

Museum of Natural History; UP –

Diliman’s Institute of Biology on

DNA barcoding; and, Philippine

– California Advances in Research

Initiatives on Translational Science

Microbial biome (mycology).

The Department received

new equipment for water quality

monitoring, chemicals, and reagents

from the US Embassy’s American

Space Resource Center and molecular

biology equipment donated by

Dr. Enrico C. and Dr. Esther L.

Sobong. The Sobong couple also

sponsored the faculty training for the

Department.

Faculty members attended

several national and international

conferences during the year. Dr.

Hilconida P. Calumpong attended

the UN-sponsored forum on

“Conservation and Sustainable

Use of Marine Biodiversity

InternationalForum”onJanuary

16-19, 2017 in New York, USA and

the UN-Environmental Assessment

Workshop on March 12-31, 2017.

She also attended the 35th National

Convention of the Association

of Systematic Biologists of the

Philippines held in Bacolod City on

May 28-31, 2017.

EnglishThe English Department, through

its Language Center’s Intensive

English Program (IntEp), has helped

the University increase its foreign

exchange students. Students from

Shikoku Gakuin University, Japan;

Kyushu University, Japan; Hannam

University, Korea; and Homeschool

Korea enrolled for the three to four

week course designed for non-English

speakers.

The Creative Writing Center, and

in partnership with the Culture and

Arts Council, conducted a one-week

intensive writing workshop with the

creative writing students. Multi-

awarded poet and writers Eugene

Gloria, Anthony Tan, Marjorie Evasco,

Wilfredo Pascual, Oscar Peñaranda,

and Tim Tomlinson were invited to

deliver lectures during the workshop.

America, Europe, Australia and

Africa were gathered on campus.

They had a rich line-up of paper

presentations at plenary and breakout

sessions covering interlocking issues

around the theme of “Re-Imagining

Community, Scholarship, and

Citizenship”.

PhysicsPhysics Department’s faculty and

Mindanao (SPVM) National Physics

Conference held on October 20 to

22, 2016 at the University’s Luce

Auditorium and Guy Hall, along with

its two breakout conferences: the 2016

International Conference on Material

Science and Nanotechnology, and 4th

International Meeting for Complex

Systems. The event featured experts

andresearchersfromdifferent

countries, including Singapore,

Austria, Mexico, Poland, Taiwan,

Portugal, Japan, Malaysia, and the

Philippines.

The department also sponsored

a public lecture on the Latest

Applications and Developments

of Nuclear Physics in the Field of

Medicine by Dr. Minoru Sakama of

Tokushima University.

B. Bagtoltol was one of the recipients

of the BPI-DOST Science Awards on

April 4, 2017 in Manila.

PsychologyOn August 10, 2016, the Master of

Arts in Psychology program retained

its Level IV re-accreditation status

from the Federation of Accrediting

Agencies of the Philippines ACSCU-

Accrediting Agency, Inc. The said

statusiseffectiveMay2016toMay

2021. The Bachelor of Science in

Psychology program was already

granted a Level IV re-accreditation

status by the Philippine Accrediting

of Agriculture. It is anchored on

Service - Learning to address negative

impacts of climate change in selected

communities in Negros Oriental.

Both projects are funded by the

UBCHEA.

Assoc. Prof. Ligutom was invited

by two universities in Myanmar as

visiting lecturer at Tedim Christian

University on July 25 to August 29,

2016 and in Dagon University on

August 1-3, 2016. She also presented

Accredited Accounting Teachers

in the Philippines on October 26,

2016 by the Board of Accountancy.

Accreditation is already a requirement

before a CPA can teach accounting

subjects. The accreditation is

granted if a faculty has complied

with the Continuing Professional

Development requirements. All

faculty of Accountancy must now be

accredited accounting teachers.

Through CBA, Silliman continues

to be the partner-university of

Germany’s Ingolstadt University and

South Korea’s Hannam University

- Linton School of Global Business.

Both German and South Korean

students come to Silliman to take

credit courses in management,

economics, entrepreneurship and

general courses in the University,

with CBA as the host college. For the

Hannam students, Philippine Culture

Courses at CBA have been added

as part of their Global Education

Program.

As part of CBA’s extension

DIVINITY SCHOOL

This year, the Silliman University

Divinity School (SUDS) revived its

exchange program with the Japan

Bible Theological School. The

program, which usually lasts 2 to 3

weeks, aims to send selected students

and faculty members between the

two schools for exposure and study.
