COURSE OUTLINE Name of course: Exploring London's Art Galleries Level: Course suitable for all levels Length of course: 5 weeks ( 5 x 2 hours) Max number of students: 16 Course description: This course will develop your knowledge of art history and appreciation in front of the paintings from collections of the National Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern. You will have the opportunity to explore the collection of these famous galleries and discuss major ideas, issues and debates of Western European Art while looking at the examples from these galleries. The course will expand your skills in recognising the styles and techniques used in different periods and by a range of individual painters. By the end of this course, you will be able to: - identify the important movements and artists of Western Art represented in the collections of the galleries visited during the course. - describe the chronology of these movements and the influence of one on the next. - relate each movement/major artist to the historical, economic, and social events of the time. - identify the major artists and discuss the historical significance of their achievements. - develop the knowledge, skills and sensitivity to make aesthetic judgments. Initial and on-going assessment: There is no formal assessment for the courses at Bishopsgate Institute. However to monitor your learning and progress, tutors will assess your participation during the sessions. Previous skills or knowledge required: No previous skills or knowledge required Equipment or materials: None other than for note-taking. Handouts for each session will be provided Progression opportunities: You can continue your learning with one of the many Art History and Appreciation courses at Bishopsgate Institute such as Exploring the National Gallery, An Introduction to the History of European Art, The ‘Isms’ of Modern Art, Art History and Appreciation: Modern Masters and The Beginnings of Modern Art.
