SCHOOL CARD
This year School Card forms can be filled out online either from your home or we can give you access from the front office. Please see Jude if you would like help with this. The website link is below

Acquaintance Night
Thank you to all of the families who attended our
Acquaintance Night on Tuesday Night. It was lovely to see so many children
sharing their learning with their parents. Only a few families attended the
Literacy Bag workshop so we are looking at running another one on a Friday
afternoon at 2:30pm (just before pick up). If you would be interested in attending
this please inform Tamra Mardle or myself so we can determine if we should go
ahead with this idea. The workshop will provide you with great strategies on how
to support your child’s literacy, particularly reading, at home.
Sports Day
We have tentatively booked March the 29th as our Sports Day, this is still
dependent on the high school sports day date so is subject to change.
AGM
The Governing Council AGM is on Monday the 18th of February at 7pm in the
staffroom. If you are keen to join the Governing Council please come along. Governing Council meets 2 times a term for approximately 60-90 minutes. Benefits of being on Governing Council include:
You get to share your thoughts and opinions
You hear what other people think
You become well informed about what is happening in our school
You get to know other parents
You get to understand how the school works
You learn how things "fit together" at school
Pupil Free Day
The first of our Pupil Free Days is on Thursday March the 14th. This is a Literacy
training with Chris Killey and as with most highly regarded presenters we had to work with a date that she was available. The Governing Council have endorsed this day.

MRS NANKIVELL
We’ve had a very busy start to the term. Year 7’s enjoyed participating in eight water activities at the Aquatic Camp at
Murray Bridge, 10 Pin Bowling at Bridge Bowl and a trip to
Monarto Zoo.
Also our class have been working on “getting to know you”
activities.

MISS HAMPTON
The students in 5/6H have worked extremely hard for the first
two weeks to create a classroom community that feels safe and
welcoming for all.
We spent time in Week 1 continuing our school focus on having
a growth mindset. The students were given statements they
might use if they were using a fixed mindset and asked how
they could change that statement to growth mindset thinking.
Together as a class all students were able to share their ideas
on how they could use a growth mindset in the classroom. The
student’s ideas became a display in our class as a reminder for
how we can
use a growth
mindset in
different
situations.
Something that became very important for the students in 5/6H was
creating a classroom community that had clear, fair and consistent
expectations. As a class the students thought of the expectations
they believe are important and shared these with their peers. These
expectations became our classroom contract. All students printed
their thumbprint onto our class tree to represent their agreement to
the classroom contract. This will stay up in the classroom all year
as a reminder of the expectations they set in their classroom.
The students also set goals to begin their new
year in 5/6H. They had to choose a single word
that would represent their goal for the New Year.
Some of the words chosen included challenge,
friendship, kind, enjoy, remember, teamwork and
confidence. Students had to also decide on action
steps they would take to achieve this goal
throughout the year. What a great start to the
year it has been!

MRS KEEN
The bell rang and 25 excited and slightly nervous
students started in the Keen Team for 2019! What a
busy start to the year we already have had! Cooking
took place last week and we look forward to being in the
garden week 4. The Keen Team have been getting to
know each other and learning ‘what makes a good
student, teacher and school’, by playing fun games and
learning new songs.
Bang, crackle and snap! Chinese New Year has been
celebrated in the Keen Team by making lanterns,
decorating the Chinese flag and finding out where China
is in the world using an atlas. Australia Day was
celebrated by reading a true story written by Colin Thiele,
The March of Mother Duck is based in Adelaide and tells
of a mummy duck making her nest in the pond at the
South Australian Police Headquarters.

COORDINATOR - LEARNING IMPROVEMENT LITERACY AND NUMERACY
TAMRA MARDLE
Welcome back to a new year! When a new year begins there are new learning opportunities and a perfect time for
us to focus on our growth mindsets around learning and life. Every year is an opportunity for us to grow as a
learner and individual.
Our philosophy at Birdwood Primary, is that we never give up and learning is something that is to challenge and
stretch our thinking. Persistence and Resilience are key values that we want our students to have in their tool box
of learning.
If you FAIL, never give up because F.A.I.L means “First Attempt In Learning.”
END is not the end. In fact, E.N.D means “EFFORT NEVER DIES’.
If you get NO as an answer, remember NO means “NEXT OPPORTUNITY’.
BE POSITIVE IN 2019!
Help your child to build a positive mindset around their learning and
encourage them to do their personal best.
Literacy Bags Workshop
Thank you to the parents and carers who attended our Literacy Bag Workshop on Tuesday evening. As a school
community we want all of our children to reach their personal best in their learning goals. Together in a partner-
ship we can achieve this.
Our Literacy Bags are a resource we provide families (Reception -2) to help support literacy and numeracy skills
in the home. Please come and see me if you haven’t received your bag or if you have any questions about
helping your child at home.

MRS MARDLE
Welcome to the 2019 school year. The Mardle Team have settled in well to their new classroom and
have been getting to know each other. We have worked together as a team to establish our
classroom expectations and have set ourselves learning goals for the year as we strive to be all
successful learners.
A special welcome to new students and their families. We hope you enjoy the learning journey with
your child at Birdwood.
A special thank you to parents and volunteers who have offered to help with the garden and kitchen
program. The children enjoy your contributions and support with their learning. Please come and see
me if you are keen to volunteer and hear children read in the morning during our literacy block. When
parents volunteer to help students read this is a great opportunity to build confidence in literacy for our
children. Please talk to Sue or myself about helping with reading.
Our classroom is looking fabulous! The children have painted holiday pictures and shared their holiday
happenings with each other. We have started investigating the Chinese New Year as we learn about
the Year of the pig. The children have learnt about the Chinese Zodiac through a story that explains
how the animals order was established. We have made historical connections and also used our
mathematical order to retell the story. We have been getting to know each other through games,
stories and plenty of fun. Later in the term, we will explore our under the sea theme.
We would also like to welcome Mrs Rebecca Hoffmann to the team. Rebecca will be teacher leader
every Friday releasing me from the class to work
with staff on learning improvement in literacy.
Here are some photos of students working
together to be successful learners. Working
together in learning teams, cooperating,
communicating, critical thinking and creativity
are some of the skills we have practised.

COMMUNITY
We are very excited to announce that the “Newton Jaguars Premier League” Netball Head Coach and the Premier League Team will be coming to Birdwood.
They will be running a netball clinic for all our junior age groups, from u9’s - u17’s (2011-2002).
We are looking forward to this great opportunity to learn and develop our skills!
All welcome, new players and families are encouraged to come along to join our fantastic family club. We hope to see
