BIRDS OF A FEATHER - FLOCK TO SYDNEY
Local resident, Doug Lange has a real passion for budgies, so much
so that he recently attended the 44th Australian National Budgerigar
Championship Show in Penrith, NSW on the 27th May 2018.
This show is the ‘holy grail’ for budgie breeders Australia wide with 81
budgies being selected to go from each state. A pre-selection in
Adelaide occurred a week before the Show with Doug entering 3 of
his birds. There are at least 350 birds in this pre-selection show and
Doug was lucky enough for one of his birds to be selected to head to
Sydney for the Championships.
The 81 birds from SA are then put on a plane in boxes to head to
Sydney. A box which contains 40 birds costs $233 for the flight. They
arrive at the show 5 days before judging which allows time to have
them prepared. Once they arrive they are put in cages to be fed,
watered and then have time to settle down after their flight.
The following day is then spent shampooing, hair drying and rubbing
baby oil into their beaks and legs to give them shine. On Show day
Doug arrives at 6am along with the other two Bird Carers for South
Australia to get the birds ready for the big event.
4 judges, including one from Germany then carefully look over the birds to pick
the winners. Doug had entered a “Dilute” breed which ended up coming 17th in
his class. During the past ten years he has had two National Winners with his Light
Green and Crested budgies. This means the birds are Australian Champions.
Winning birds then have the opportunity to be auctioned off for breeding with
some fetching over $3000 for a pair. Doug has previously been offered $2000 for
one of his birds but did not accept the deal.
Doug has around 150 budgies
with a large set up created in
his back yard just for the birds.
There is a breeding room, a
large range of aviaries and
nesting boxes which Doug has
all made himself.
He is part of the Pt Pirie
Budgerigar Club who regularly
meet for events.
The time has come for Doug to clear out some of his
birds to make room for breeding.

STARGAZING Central Yorke School was part of an amazing Australia wide event on the evening
of May 23rd. The ABC in partnership with the Australian National University were
aiming to smash the Guiness Book of records for the most people in one country
stargazing at the same time. Participants were required to look through a
telescope or binoculars for a ten minute period simultaneously.
The event was free but many chose to purchase telescopes provided by the ABC
and ANU. The SRC had the BBQ fired up for a sausage sizzle and the
Parents and Friends group sold mugs of hot soup.
Guests were able to watch the ABC broadcast Stargazing Live on a wide screen
TV set up on the senior suite verandah. Over 50 people were in attendance with 41
officially registered to be part of the world record attempt. Evidence of the
evening has been submitted to the ABC including statements from a steward, two
witnesses, timekeepers and a video of the attempt. The record has been broken
and Central Yorke School should know in the next few days if their event has
officially contributed to this.

Maitland & Districts Garden Club The Maitland & Districts Garden Club meeting was held at the Uniting Church Hall on 14
May 2018 with invited guests from the Minlaton Garden Club. The General Meeting was
held and different members gave a short report on the Ardrossan bus trip, the visit to
Sophie Thompsons ‘Patch” and a visit to the Tupelo Grove Nursery in the Adelaide Hills.
There was also a report on the Clare Spring Garden event.
After the General Meeting the Zone Rally preparations to be held in Maitland Town Hall
on 3 Nov 2018 were shared as Minlaton & Maitland Garden Clubs are co-hosts in this joint
venture. The meal, speakers, garden and giant raffle are all in hand, plus the Plant Trading
Table.
After a shared luncheon both clubs were treated to a wonderful array of beautiful healthy
ferns propagated and grown by Adrian & Jan Stock, one of Ardrossan’s best kept secrets
and best of all, they were for sale. Adrian spoke at length on the types of ferns (over 500).
They like Charlie Carp Fertiliser and propagate from fronds collected from March to July.
Place in a paper bag, 2 days is usually enough, to collect spore.
Plant Sept-Oct (warmer) in sifted lines and peat moss. Remove a pinch of
spore for planting and when they are about the size of a finger nail pull apart
with tweezers to re-pot. Can use old glass louvres to box them in and water
with a fine mist. When hot, water once a week, can reduce foliage. Best to
cut all off level with pot. Don’t feed bananas to elk horns etc., a hand full of
fertiliser is best.
A small gift was given in appreciation for sharing their expertise on an
interesting subject.
Next meeting at National Trust Building 12 June 2018 at 10am. BYO lunch.
The Rotary Club of Maitland celebrated its 50th Anniversary in March this year.
In August 2016, the club changed from weekly meetings to two a month. Since then
our membership has grown to 28 gaining four new members, a 15% increase.
In our second meeting in May we inducted Geoff Brind and Neil Barnes as our latest
new members.

The Rotary Club of Maitland had pleasure last week in donating a new defibrillator
to the Maitland Golf Club. The suggestion was generated by Brian Matthews, Rotary
Club Sergeant. This is the 3rd defibrillator that the Rotary Club of Maitland has
contributed to sporting clubs in this community.

Morris and his wife, Esther, went to the state fair every year and every year
Morris would say, ‘Esther, I’d like to ride in that helicopter.’ Esther always
replied ‘I know, Morris, but that helicopter ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50
dollars.’
One year Esther and Morris went to the fair and Morris said ‘Esther I’m 85
years old. If I don’t ride that helicopter I might never get another chance.’
Esther replied ‘Morris that helicopter is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.’
The pilot overheard the couple and said ‘Folks, I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take
the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not
say a word I won’t charge you but if you say one word, it’s 50 dollars.’
Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy
manoeuvres but not a word was heard. He did his
dare-devil trick over and over again but still not a
word. When they landed the
pilot turned to Morris and said ‘By golly, I did
everything I could to get you to yell out but you
didn’t. I’m impressed!’
Morris replied ‘Well I almost said something when
Esther fell out but, you know, 50 dollars is 50 dollars!’
Sandra’s story There’s no shortage of studies telling employers a diverse workforce is good for business because it adds people with different life experiences and points of view. Any employer still wondering what that really means could learn a lot by meeting Sandra Bach, who recently joined Maxima answering calls from potential customers in the Disability Employment Services business. Sandra was born with clubfeet and a knee abnormality, but she gets around the office without any fuss with the help of a walker and is making a great contribution, answering enquiries from jobseekers two days a week. She’s great at her job, not just because she relates so well to those she is talking to, but because she is engaged and loves helping others. At face value, Sandra is just like other great employees. But when you understand what she has overcome, and get to experience her positivity about life, you understand that a diversity of life experiences really does make the workplace richer. When she was born in 1962 Sandra’s parents were told she would never walk. But walk she did. When she was 17 doctors wanted to amputate her legs. She told them no, which was a gutsy call for a teenager up against the medical establishment of the 1970s. And as an adult, her doctor told her she would be confined to a wheelchair by the time she was 50, which she refused to accept as well. Her condition is painful and she has needed drugs throughout her life to manage her condition but there’s no way Sandra will let her disability stop her enjoying life. And after raising two children it wasn’t going to prevent her getting back into the workforce and finding a meaningful job. Sandra’s first break came in 2010 when she was given a job as a receptionist. But she was caught up in a round of redundancies and found it extremely hard to find another job. “I applied for lots of jobs, not saying that I had a disability. But when I showed up with my walker, the interview was effectively over before it even began. And it’s so just competitive out there. You are up against lots of people with certificates in computing and so on.” But her persistence eventually paid off when she struck up a conversation at a disability expo with Maxima staff. “They listened to me and they cared. That’s the great thing about Maxima.”

MAITLAND MARKETS UPDATE
The Market opened on Sunday 20th May for a visit from the Triumph
Car Club. They were a very friendly group and we enjoyed their
company. They were keen to purchase some of our craft and
produce and exchange patterns of our goods. We have had many
visitors from around Australia and most of them comment on the
quality of our market which makes us quite proud.
NEW ITEM TO COME THIS MONTH: It is called a Microwave Bowl
Buddy— a shaped pot holder fitted to a cereal bowl (whether you
cook porridge or reheat food) saves your fingers or accidents with a
towel or tea-towel whilst getting the hot bowl out of the microwave.
Thanks to the Men’s Shed for fixing up our carpet sweeper. It is a very
important tool for the market.
We always have a warm atmosphere in this weather. One couple
called in for 10 minutes and stayed for 2 hours talking to our volunteers
and locals over a ‘cuppa’. My thanks to the volunteers who willingly
come and help deep the market a special place for locals and
visitors.
If anyone has any wooden coat hangers they no
longer need please drop them into the market.

Commissioner for Children & Young People listening to the
hopes & dreams in the Yorke Peninsula
The commissioner for Children and Young People Helen Connolly recently
visited the Maitland Lutheran School as part of her ‘2018 Hopes and Dreams
Regional Tour’. The Regional tour takes in 10 regions of South Australia in 10
months.
The commissioner will listen to the aspirations of local children and will be
holding consultations with small groups in organised sessions with agencies,
youth groups and schools. Ms Connolly says the idea for the Hopes and Dreams
regional tour came out of her Listening Tour in 2017.
“During the Listening Tour young people talked a lot about what they wanted in
the future, what type of job they would like or what their sporting aspirations
were.”
“On the regional visits many
children and young people
talked about the
importance of feeling proud
of where they lived. We
heard that they didn't want
to leave their towns when
they were older, but many
felt there would be more
opportunities if they did,”
said the Commissioner.
“I want to share any
emerging themes with local
leadership and build strong
relationships between young people and local decision makers.”
The Commissioner is committed to supporting SA children and young people to
be involved in decision making that affects them, giving particular
consideration to hearing the voices of kids who are doing it tough.
