WHAT IS BIPOLAR DISORDER ?

Bipolar is a mental disorder characterized by extreme shifts in mood, with fluctuations in energy and activity levels.

During these abnormal shifts, the patient commonly finds it difficult to complete everyday tasks.

WHAT AGE DO YOU DEVELOP BIPOLAR?

Bipolar disorder often develops in a person's late teens or early adult years.

At least half of all cases start before age 25. Some people have their first symptoms during

childhood, while others may develop symptoms late in life.

Bipolar disorder is not easy to spot when it

starts.

CAUSES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER

The Cause Of Bipolar Disorder Is Not Entirely Known.

The Current Thinking Is That This Is A Predominantly Neurobiological Disorder That Occurs In A Specific Part Of The Brain And Is Due To A Malfunction Of Certain Brain Chemicals (That Occur Both In The Brain And The Body).

Three Specific Brain Chemicals Have Been Implicated — Serotonin, Dopamine And Noradrenaline.

Although No One Is Quite Sure About The Exact Causes Of Bipolar Disorder.

RESEARCHERS HAVE FOUND THESE IMPORTANT CLUES:

GENETIC FACTORS IN BIPOLAR DISORDER

About half the people with bipolar disorder have a family member with a mood disorder, such as depression.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN BIPOLAR DISORDER Even without clear genetic factors, altered health

habits, alcohol or drug abuse, or hormonal problems can trigger an episode.

MEDICATION-TRIGGERED MANIA?

Certain other medications can produce a “high” that resembles mania. Appetite suppressants, for example, may trigger increased energy, decreased need for sleep and increased talkativeness. After stopping the medication, however, the person returns to his normal mood

Excessive doses of certain over-the-counter drugs, including appetite suppressants and cold preparations.

Non-psychiatric medications, such as medicine for thyroid problems and corticosteroids like prednisone.

INTERPERSONAL AND SOCIAL RHYTHM THERAPY (IPSRT)

This type of therapy is a type of psychotherapy. It aims to help people with bipolar disorder to:

Maintain a regular routine Adopt good sleep habits Learn how to solve problems that interrupt

their routine

Tracking your moods and managing your lifestyle can reduce mania and depressive symptoms.

IPSRT is almost always prescribed alongside bipolar medications.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

Traumatic events can affect someone with bipolar disorder. EMDR is a trauma resolution therapy aimed to relieve emotional and physiological trauma.

With EMDR, a person will think about a traumatic memory, trigger, or event. As they do this, they’ll focus on external sensory stimuli like hand taps or eye movements. These sessions should help you process your experience and relieve stress.

In one study, people who underwent EMDR therapy showed significant improvement of bipolar symptoms.

WHAT LIFESTYLE HABITS HELP WITH MANAGING BIPOLAR DISORDER?

These lifestyle changes may help with managing bipolar disorder triggers:

Exercise regularly: People with bipolar disorder have a higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Exercise can also help stabilize moods, ease depression, and increase sleep.

Get plenty of sleep: Adequate sleep can also help stabilize your mood and reduce irritability.

Avoid unhealthy relationships: People who encourage risk-taking behavior can worsen your bipolar disorder. Avoid relationships that encourage unhealthy behaviors like alcohol consumption or use of illegal substances.

Eat healthy foods: Along with eating fish and omega-3 fatty acids, you can reduce your intake of saturated and trans fats, which are linked to brain chemical imbalances.
