Introduction

BEST-India (Biotechnology Entrepreneurship Student Teams) is a Programme aimed at encouraging young postgraduate students in developing biotechnology entrepreneurship by exposing them to issues involved in commercialization of bio-science. The programme is successfully held for the past 7 years. Programme is a much awaited forum for young B.E/ B. Tech, postgraduate and doctoral students in life sciences to realize their entrepreneurial dreams.

The Programme is sponsored by The Department of Biotechnology, (www.dbtindia.nic.in) Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and is executed and managed by Association of

Biotechnology Led Enterprises, ABLE – India (www.ableindia.in).

Pre Workshop Arrangements

A nationwide Call for Concepts in the area of Life Sciences that have commercialization potential was announced in national dailies, as well as through posters and brochures sent out to all academic Institutes and colleges. The last date for receiving the concept notes was November, 2016. The Students had to create teams comprising of 5 members, identify a team leader and submit a Concept Note based on a scientific idea that had commercialization potential.

Out of 37 Concept Notes, 20 of them were found to be eligible in pre-screening which were received from

Institutes all across India. These 20 Concept Notes were short listed by the Jury members, a panel comprising of eminent persons with scientific knowledge and from the Investment sector. The Jury and the

speakers were Dr. P.M.Murali, Dr. Shrikumar Suryanarayanan, Mr. Ravi Bhola, Mr. Utkarsh Palnitkar, Mr.

Sohang Chatterjee, Dr. Prahalad Achutarao, Dr. Maloy Ghosh, Mr. GS Krishnan, Dr. K.K. Narayanan, Mr

K.Vijayaraghavan, Mr. N.Suresh, Mr. Goutam Das, Mr. Subramani Ramachandrappa and Mr. Vishal Gandhi. They were from academia, industry, scientific and investor community, each expert in their

respective fields. The Concept Notes were evaluated for Innovativeness of the idea, Techno economic

feasibility and scalability of the idea, Commercialization & Market potential of the idea, Clarity of communication. The Jury short listed 20 teams from different universities i.e. ICT Maharashtra, Shiv Nadar

University Uttar Pradesh, Sathybama University Tamil Nadu, St. Xavier's College. Maharashtra, Shoolini

University, Himachal Pradesh, Rajalakshmi Engineering College Tamil Nadu , Amity Institute Uttar

Pradesh, Anna Univ. Tamil Nadu, Vellore Institute of Technology Tamil Nadu, BIT-Mesra Jharkhand were

participated in Manesar, NCR from February 19th to 23th, 2017.

53 Female students and 43 Male students attended the BEST 2016 Workshop

Workshop Summary

The workshop was mentored by Mr K.Vijayaraghavan, Chairman, Sathguru Management

Consultants, who kindly agreed to be part of the workshop this year.

The workshop was designed by the ABLE team and Officially Opened with Familiarization

& Introduction about BEST by Mr. Narayanan Suresh, COO ABLE which included the

topics like Role of the entrepreneurial team.

The focus of the workshop was helping the teams to be ready with as business plan by end of

first two days of campus. The workshop was structured in an interactive format and comprised

of sessions on Business planning Industry insights, Success Stories, Inspirational Stories.

The session was on The Spirit of Entrepreneurial process Mr. K.Vijayaraghavan,

Chairman, Sathguru Management Consultants.

The following session were on Seeding the Cloud, Ideating, Identifying, Defining and

analysing opportunities by Dr Shrikumar Suryanarayan, vice-president, ABLE &

Chairman, Sea6Energy who explained how in the past Entrepreneurs were generally seen as

mavericks who got this one great idea that they developed into a great product or service. The

entrepreneurial process has become more predictable though the degree of difficulty still

remains.

On February 21st, Mr. Subramani Ramachandrappa, Treasurer ABLE & CMD, Richcore

Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd delivered sessions on Making it Work: Financing & Licensing,

Technology commercialization & articulating propositions; How Exciting is the Opportunity?

and Validating the Market Opportunity. In this session examples of market and significant

market opportunities were explained. The session also enabled participants understand how

to segment and define customer needs and a huge market potential. The following session was about The Power of Networking for Entrepreneurs by Mr G S

Krishnan, Regional President, Novozymes South Asia, who explained about how important

it is to build a network and make win-win associations.

The following session was about Effective IP Management by Mr. Ravi Bhola, Partner, K &

S Partners explained important steps to Establishing an IP management framework:

Step 2: Identify your organizations’ IP rights & competitive IP landscape

Step 3: Align your organizations’ IP rights with its business goals

Step 4: Formulate an IP strategy for your organization

The next session was by Mr. K. Vijayaraghavan, Chairman, Sathguru Management

Consultants on Entrepreneurial Learning and How to Practicing your Start up pitch- An

effective brand strategy.

At the end of the 2 day workshop the participants were able to put together their business plans

for a 20 minutes presentation before the Jury on day 3.

On February 22nd

2017 Dr P.M.Murali. President ABLE, Introduced the Jury, Observers

and Evaluation Process.

The 96 students showed great enthusiasm throughout the workshop and were happy to learn

about the nuances of starting a business venture

On the final day the twenty participating teams presented their Business Plans based on the

learning during the workshop and made a 10 minute presentation to the Jury. The Jury panel

was chaired by Dr. P.M.Murali, President, ABLE. The Presentations were evaluated for

Techno-economic feasibility / commercialisation potential of the business; Innovativeness of

the idea; Market Potential; Quality and conviction of team and Level of Motivation of team

members.

Five top teams were identified on the Jury Scores

The first prize of Rs 5 lakh, the second prize of Rs 3 Lakh for 2 teams and the third prize of

Rs 2 Lakh for 2 teams was disbursed to the winning teams in February 22nd 2017. Qualified of

Third winning team all 5 students are Female.

Event Summary

ABLE successfully conducted the 13th edition of BIOINVEST on 04th April, 2017 at Hotel

Shangri-La, Bangalore. The DBT supported event and the event witnessed the presence of the

eminent industry experts, government decision makers, investors, venture capitalists, leading

executives, young and aspiring entrepreneurs for the programme. Dr. P M Murali was the guest

speaker for the event. The BEST winner’s presentations were well received and the teams were

pleased with the interactions and for a chance at meeting a lot of biotech stakeholders. There were

two panel discussions where the panellists provided suggestions on new ways in which to get

products and services to the market and also advise the government on which subsectors require

more attention while granting early support.

citizens. Biotechnology has the potential to increase efficiency and

sustainability through affordable innovation thereby reducing Stress.
