BIOLOGY Biology, the study of life at all levels – biomolecules, genes and genomes, cells and organisms and communities and ecosystems – is a dynamic and fast-evolving discipline. Hiram biology majors learn not just to be encyclopedias of knowledge, but scientists equipped to evolve with new technology, to handle new information and to make discoveries that will advance the understanding of life, medicine, agriculture and biotechnology. With almost every biology course having a lab component, students quickly learn how to navigate the scientific process: from making observations, to experimental design and drawing conclusions from results. Students become proficient in hypothesis testing and data analysis and gain experience communicating their findings to both the scientific and larger community. By the time they graduate, all Hiram biology majors will have experience with authentic research within one or more courses. Career Fields/Options Professional medical training, leading to health professions such as physician, veterinarian, physical therapist, nurse practitioner, dentist and physician assistant Graduate research programs leading to research and teaching careers in academia, environ- mental monitoring, government research and biotechnology companies Direct access to jobs such as a lab technician, natural resources field assistant, environmental policy advocate, biology education and pharmaceutical salesperson (over)

BIOLOGYBiology, the study of life at all levels – biomolecules, genes and genomes, cells and organisms and communities and ecosystems – is a dynamic and fast-evolving discipline.

Career Fields/Options • Professional medical training, leading to health professions such as physician, veterinarian, physical therapist, nurse practitioner, dentist and physician assistant • Graduate research programs leading to research and teaching careers in academia, environ- mental monitoring, government research and biotechnology companies • Direct access to jobs such as a lab technician, natural resources field assistant, environmental policy advocate, biology education and pharmaceutical salesperson

The department provides opportunities for students to extend their classwork in the following ways: • Biology faculty involve students in their specific research areas: in the field, in the lab and working with diverse communities of organisms. Students can work on projects within courses and through paid and volunteer independent research projects during the academic year and summer. • The James H. Barrow Field Station is located three miles from campus and features 500-plus acres of diverse habitats, plants and wildlife, including the largest remaining old growth beech-maple forest and several rare bird species. The Field Station also houses an avian rehab clinic and several captive breeding programs. More than 20 internships are available each summer. • Partnerships with local organizations including Penitentiary Glen Reservation and the Akron Zoo, as well as with local veterinarians and doctors, connect students to internships and research experiences. • Study away trips to the Galapagos Islands, Florida and Alaska expose biology students to wildlife and ecosystems that are otherwise inaccessible.
