BIOGRAPHY OF RUSSELL M. MAGNAGHI Born (1943) and raised in San Francisco, California, I attended the University of San Francisco where I received the B.A. in 1965. I went onto the St. Louis University and received the M.A. (1967) and the Ph.D. (1970). I came to Marquette on a visit and later was hired and joined the faculty at Northern Michigan University in 1969. Beginning in 1974 I began to focus on regional history and in the early 1980s began to study the Italians in the Upper Peninsula. I have also found time to develop one of the first courses on the history of Native Americans in a state university. My interest and passion has been the comparative history of the Americas as well. I have also found time to research and write over 200 articles and monographs and present a similar number of papers and radio programs. In recent years I have been appointed University Historian (1994) and Director of the Center for Upper Peninsula Studies (1996 and 2006). Since 2002 I have been interim head of the Departments of History and Philosophy. I have also worked with the community in a number of capacities using my historical expertise and people skills. BIOGRAPHY OF RUSSELL M. MAGNAGHI

Born (1943) and raised in San Francisco, California, I attended the University of San Francisco

where I received the B.A. in 1965. I went onto the St. Louis University and received the M.A.

(1967) and the Ph.D. (1970). I came to Marquette on a visit and later was hired and joined the

faculty at Northern Michigan University in 1969. Beginning in 1974 I began to focus on regional

history and in the early 1980s began to study the Italians in the Upper Peninsula. I have also

found time to develop one of the first courses on the history of Native Americans in a state

university. My interest and passion has been the comparative history of the Americas as well. I

have also found time to research and write over 200 articles and monographs and present a

similar number of papers and radio programs. In recent years I have been appointed University

Historian (1994) and Director of the Center for Upper Peninsula Studies (1996 and 2006). Since

2002 I have been interim head of the Departments of History and Philosophy. I have also

worked with the community in a number of capacities using my historical expertise and people

skills. I have co-edited the Discovering the Peoples of Michigan Series of Michigan State

University Press since 2003. It has been a great 30 years working at Northern Michigan

University.
