Biocatalysis in Agricultural Biotechnology

ACS Symposium Series 389 Washington, D.C.; American Chemical Society, 1989. E 75.00 397 pp., ISBN 0-8412-1571-5

The volume No. 389 of the ACS symposium series is developed from a Symposium on Biocatalysis and Biomimetics held during the Third Chemical Congress of North America (June 5- 11, 1988; Toronto, Ontario, Canada). The 26 chapters of this book are divided in the following five sections - tailoring enzymes for industrial uses, - enzymatic biosynthesis and degradation of polymers, - specially uses of enzymes, - insect and plant enzymology, - biocatalytic synthesis of agrochemicals. In the first section the design of enzymatic catalysis for food processing and the use of plant cells for secondary metabolite production are discussed and described. The application of pectinolytic and chitinolytic enzymes, of peroxidases and lipases are the main points of the second section. In the third section the chapter of an immobilized plant cell reactor is of interest. The fourth section describes e.g. insect and plant enzymology in connection with the action of herbicides and pesticides etc. The preparation of chiral building blocks and optical active compounds by enzymatic methods are contained in the last section. The different contributions in this volume demonstrate the increasing importance of biotechnological research in agricultural sciences. This book will be of interest to scientists in agrobiochemistry, food science, microbiology and enzymology. G. KLAPPACH
