Bio Dr Kathy A. Mills (PhD, M Ed, B Ed, Grad Dip CS, Grad Cert Higher Education) is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, School of Curriculum at QUT and a Senior Research Fellow of the Australian Research Council (Discovery Early Career Research Award, 2014-2017). Dr Mills thesis examined the relations between power, pedagogy, discourses, and students’ ability to take hold of multimodal literacies in a culturally diverse school. Dr Mills has contributed over 60 peer-reviewed publications to the field of curriculum and pedagogy, including 4 sole-authored books, 34 scholarly journal articles, and chapters in international literacy handbooks with co- authors Prof Len Unsworth, Prof Barbara Comber and Prof Allan Luke. Dr Mills’ first-authored work focuses on multimodal literacy curriculum and pedagogy with disadvantaged groups, including Indigenous Australian students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Her research draws on a wide range of qualitative research methodologies. Her most cited work is: A Review of the Digital Turn in the New Literacy Studies, published in the Review of Educational Research (ISI Ranked 1/129 in Education Research, IF: 5.0, 2014). Dr Mills’ research monograph, The Multiliteracies Classroom (2011), was nominated for an international award. Dr Mills is Associate Editor of the Australian Educational Researcher (2014-). She serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Literacy Research (Arizona, 2014-). She is the Treasurer of the American Educational Research Association, Writing and Literacies SIG (2013-2014), next Program Chair (2015-2016) and future Chair (2017-2018), and serves on the Review Board of the Australian Journal of Language and Literacy (2014-). Dr Mills also serves on the Review Board of the Reading Teacher, International Reading Association, New Jersey (2011-2012, 2013-2014).
