PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Term 4 is halfway over and students have been busy completing exams and assignments. The Growth Day last week was based on Future Focused Learning and students developed skills to prepare them for an even more globally connected world. Cultural Awareness, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Communication and Teamwork were the key attributes developed. After an introduction to the day, students rotated around spending 40 minutes with each activity. Cultural Awareness was promoted through Darren Cooper visiting and teaching students about the making and throwing of boomerangs. All students got to paint their own boomerang to take home. An option corroboree was also run at lunch time which most students chose to attend. Planning for 2020 continues, with funding allocated to employ an additional primary teacher each morning to split classes into K/1/2, 3/4 and 5/6 to have good small classes able to focus strongly on literacy and numeracy. The second half of the day will see 3/4/5/6 together as they complete other KLAs such as Art and Sport. This will stretch school finances, however, it should give a real boost to students. Our first Aboriginal Education Team meeting took place on Thursday afternoon. It will meet three times a term and is eager to support indigenous students in our school and develop the cultural awareness of all students. Learning indigenous words across K to 12 is one initiative that has been taking place this year. Other initiatives being discussed is the formation of a Junior AECG that may engage in activities with neighbouring school groups and the possibility of excursions to places of Aboriginal significance in the local area. We are also going to try and recruit an Aboriginal Education Worker (AEW) to support students.

Weekly Focus Week 5 is focused on being inclusive, or “accept differences in others” as a PBL value. Binnaway has a long history of having students with a diverse range of learners. Sometimes support needs are obvious such as being in a wheelchair, other times it is not so obvious, such as an intellectual disability. Where substantial adjustments are required, it may mean a student is doing things very differently to others and it is important that everyone assist in this process. Students have been encouraged to talk to their teacher if they’re unsure why someone is doing things differently and we encourage parents to contact the school if concerns arise too. Week 6 will have “Monitoring”, one of the Focus on Reading “Super 6” strategies as the main focus. There should always be a few words (but not more than 20%) in a text students are unfamiliar or unsure about, otherwise it is too easy. Monitoring is the process of identifying those words or challenging concepts that disrupt understanding. Students identify meanings they’re unsure of and then checking or clarify the meaning so the text is understood and comprehension is effective. A guide to Monitoring, Visualising and Summarising are included later on in the newsletter. Andrew Glazebrook Relieving Principal

SECONDARY NEWS We are very close to the end of term and the end of the school year. Students are reminded that they are expected to wear school uniform as per P and C agreement. In this hot weather it is important that students have their own WATER bottle that they can take into class with them – water is permitted to be taken into the classroom – other drinks are not. It is also important that students have their hat with them every day – for sport, PE, practical tasks in the sun. We are completing an aquatic unit at the pool during Wednesday sport. All students are expected to participate in this unit, and the activities associated with it. A reminder that all students are required to bring gear for swimming with them, and participate in the activities. Years 7 – 10 have completed their Yearly Exams this week. Staff are busy compiling reports that will be issued when completed. We expect to see Year 7 student Brooke Anastasis and Year 8 student Emma Riordan back next week after their two week stay at Stewart House. Stewart House is a wonderful opportunity for students and is supported by weekly donations from the salaries of teachers such as myself. Friday November 22nd three of our Secondary students will be attending the Combined Central Schools Sports day at Coonabarabran. Our Year 11 students will be attending Work Placement and our Year 10 students will be attending Work Experience. Ms Wilson has applied for a grant that has allowed us to take most of the students to Dubbo for the week to widen the opportunities and choices of Work Experience available. This is another example of how, as a very small Secondary department, our staff go out of their way to ensure our students have the best opportunities we can give them.

Where do all the teachers go

When it’s four o’clock?

Do they live in houses

And do they wash their socks?

SECONDARY POETRY Footy I am Joseph Thompson Running out of the shed Hear people cheering for my team I go out to the middle of the Oval. I flip a coin To see who is going to Kick. Fighting from one side to the Other. Getting hurt I am running up the side line Pass the ball to my team mate They step, make a break My team mate gets tackled He gets up, plays the ball DH passes it to FR And keeps passing it on. I score in the corner People are cheering Jumping up Singing the song Doing the wave That is my footy life. Joseph Thompson

Thunder Loud crashes of thunder

Big black clouds filled with rain Violent wind shaking the house

Crash! Bang! Whoosh! Thunderstorm knocks over trees

Sound of heavy rain on the tin roof Animals scared of the loud crash of thunder

Crashing sounds of trees falling Destructive wind knocking over trees

Dark depressing nights tonight
