Lara Dobson Bingo Players & Far East Movement – Get Up Genre – Electric/Hip-Hop Characters The characters in this music video aren’t just specified to human. The main protagonists are actually ducks and the antagonists are a gang of youths. The youths are wearing hoodies and track suits. This is a negative representation of Hip-Hop music as it classifies them as the derogatory term of ‘chavs’. This makes it seem as though all Hip - Hop music is orientated for this type of person in society. Other characters in the video are victims of what the thugs do – An innocent shopper, a couple walking down the street, a man on a bicycle and a poor old woman feeding and dancing with the ducks. Narrative The narrative of the story is that these youths have been harassing innocent bystanders from the beginning of the video. They steal the old woman’s bag and throw it into the duck pond. This drives the ducks to quack angrily at them so one of the youths throws a large rock and kills a baby duck. This creates a negative representation of teenagers at that age group as they are seen as violent and irresponsible. The ducks then come after the gang of youths and get their revenge. This is a break in the stereotypical video that comes from the hip-hop genre of music as well as the electronic. Usually, videos from the hip-hop genre don’t have a clear narrative and are usually friends messing about. This makes this video seem unique.

Bingo Players & Far East Movement – Get UpGenre – Electric/Hip-HopCharactersThe characters in this music video aren’t just specified to human.

NarrativeThe narrative of the story is that these youths have been harassing innocent bystanders from the beginning of the video. Usually, videos from the

hip-hop genre don’t have a clear narrative and are usually friends messing about. This makes this video seem unique.

IconographyThe bag is iconic as it is seen with the woman when she is feeding the ducks and with the youths when they throw it into the duck pond. It creates the start of the fight between both the ducks and the gang. This is a break in the stereotype as in Hip Hop music videos; the youths usually start fights with other gangs. Another iconic prop is the mobile phone that one of the ducks steals from a member of the group. It causes them to walk across a road and get hit by a car (also driven by a duck). This is a negative stereotype of animals as it makes the duck seem like a violent creature rather than an animal with ulterior motives. The chain that one of the ducks was wearing shows that this gang of

ducks has taken over their turf. This is a stereotypical representation of gang wars as one will take over from the other once they’ve been eliminated.

SettingThe first setting is set in a park, next to a duck pond. This is a vital setting as it is where the rivalry between the ducks and the gang first begins. The setting is a break in the stereotype of where this type of video would be set as a park is associated with families and not neighborhood youths. The other main setting is in a parking garage. This is where the gang members get killed. This is a negative representation of these places as they are known for murders and killings to happen in them.

Technical CodesThe lighting is quite low key when the youths are in a group on their own. This is to show the morbid atmosphere that follows them. This is a stereotypical representation of young teenagers who wear tracksuits in large groups as they are automatically labeled as trouble. The tracking shot when following the last remaining member of the gang helped the tense atmosphere build when in the parking garage. This is a negative representation of ducks as they are portrayed as ruthless killers rather than the loving animal’s hat we see at the park.
