A few years ago, a couple ofcomedians did a movie called“The Bucket List.” This wassimply a listing of the thingsthey wanted to accomplishbefore they “kicked the buck-et.”

The movie was never verypopular, but the term cameinto public use.

I couldn’t afford a bucketlist but I could swing TheBucket Trip: one trip I want-ed to get in before I died. De-spite having been to Ontarioand Manitoba about a dozentimes, I had never had a “flyin” to one of the remotestretches of these provinces.

I knew what I didn’t want:a trip to one of the namelakes like Gods or Nueltinsimply because I had been“blown off” big lakes before, wasting time watching bigwaves from the shore. I alsodid not want a corporate re-treat with golf courses andmeeting rooms.

What I did want was afamily-owned lodge or campwith the emphasis on fishing.I cruised the Internet forwhat I wanted and found aplace I had never heard of:Cobham River Lodge andOutpost, consisting of a rela-tively small lodge with a ca-pacity of only 15, plus an out-post camp at which only abare bones cabin was fur-nished.

I was leaning toward theoutpost setup but was talkedinto lodge accommodationsby my accompanying sister-in-law who insisted she wasnot about to be “pooping out

among the bears” in an out-house.

In addition, she empha-sized that a plane at theready might be handy for agroup that had three seniorcitizens.

I had some reservationsabout the extra costs of anAmerican Plan, but finallyconcurred and I’m glad I did.The location of the lodge wasindeed remote – 250 milesnortheast of Winnipeg to theCobham River near the“kink” in Manitoba’s eastboundary.

The location was so far outthat I never saw any signs ofhuman habitation during thelast hour of the flight.

The lodge site was at thejuncture of the Cobham Riv-er, which is as much as amile wide with a relativelyslow current. How isolated itwas was emphasized by thefact that during the wholeweek the only sign of humanlife was from the lodge.

The only disadvantage wasthat we had to take the tripin July – not a good month ifyou are seeking big northernpike. I debated originallywhether to even try, but hey, this was the bucket trip. Per-haps, my last shot.

My son, Ben, sister-in-law

Kathy Samuelson, and AlSamuelson made up the par-ty.

As it turned out, the tripwas about what I expected:Lots of fish but few big ones, the largest being my 25-inchwalleye and my brother-in-law’s 31-inch northern.

Mixed walleyes and north-erns came aplenty. I estimat-ed that the four of us caughtat least 70 pike and walleyesthe first six days with onlythree that last day because ofa hard cold front.

The lures recommended bythe lodge owner proved to bethe best: Johnson Silver min-now spoons and Mr. Twistertwin-tailed grubs on jigs. Itook along standard walleyegear like bobbers, Rapalasand spinner rigs, but theseweren’t very helpful becauseboth the northerns andwalleyes were related toweed cover.

I tried other single-hook,soft-plastic minnow imita-tions, but none proved to beas consistent as that twin-tailed Mr. Twister. Both bigfish came on that lure.

The second day out, atshore lunch, I hooked my footon a boat gunwale and took aheader, slamming my fore-head and shoulder hard intoa shoreline rock. This didn’ttake me completely out of theaction, but I couldn’t use aheavy baitcasting outfit fornortherns. I kind of wincedmy way through the week, finding out when I got backthat I had a jammed rotatorcuff in my left shoulder.

As it turned out, this kindof slowed me down a little, with few regrets. We actuallyfished only about five hours aday, partly because of thegreat accommodations.Breakfast was leisurely andvaried: home-made blueberrymuffins on arrival, frenchtoast on home-baked bread, blueberry pancakes, a spicyS.O.S. on muffins, andscrambled eggs with porkpatties.

We had deep fried walleyewith hash browns, corn andbeans at four varied riversidelocations during lunch.

Snacks were served at 6p.m. including fresh veggies, various meats and even que-sadillas.

The evening meals wereimpressive: steaming family-style bowls of roast beef, turkey, roast pork baked withapple, spaghetti with meat-

balls the size of baseballs, and to top off the week aplate-sized grilled T-bone. Noportion control here!

Everything was freshmade, and I haven’t eatensuch a healthy diet in years.

Final pleasing toucheswere the weather, which co-operated, allowing us to fishevery day, and the surprisinglack of mosquitoes, whichhad driven me whacky onseveral previous Canadiantrips.

Would I go back? In aminute.

This was the best fishingtrip I have ever taken. Theonly thing holding me back isthe hope to find a better timeperiod for a shot at a bignorthern.
