World Tourism Organization data ranking our country

78th in the category of tourism growth till year 2015

as opposed to place 175 from ten years ago, point to

the fact that BiH has significant tourism potential.

More and more tourists decide to spend their sum-

mers in Sarajevo and Banja Luka, and Mostar has

been visited by over a million tourists following the

renewal of the Old Bridge. Tuzla, once the capital of

polluting industry, is nowadays a tourist destination

gaining on popularity. Biha} offers walks across un-

touched landscapes, views of the rapids on the Una,

outing spots, fishing, and hiking on the Plje{evica

mountain. Grada~ac yearly receives around 150.000

visitors that come to this city to see its cultural and

historical monuments, the Plum Fair or its famous

lakes. In this issue we bring you the colors of the

summer from a choice of BiH cities.

THE TREASURES OF SARAJEVO

Biti u Sarajevu a ne obi}i Ba{~ar{iju, Vije}nicu, Gazi Husrev-

begovu i Carevu dàmiju, Staru pravoslavnu crkvi, Katedralu

Srca Isusova isto je kao i da nisi bio u Sarajevu

Glavni grad Bosne i Hercegovine Sarajevo u toku augusta tre-bao bi ostvariti rekordan broj posjeta stranih turista, ali i bh.

gra|ana koji }e iz inostranstva, gdje privremeno rade i ìve, do}iu posjetu svojoj rodbini diljem na{e zemlje. Stoga }e upravo au-gust, procjena je turisti~kih djelatnika i agencija, biti “udarni mje-sec” turisti~ke sezone.

No, Sarajevo u augustu nije samo omiljena destinacija stranihturista tek da bi ga obi{li, nego je razlog posjete i odràvanje Sa-rajevo film festivala (SFF), najpresti`nijeg festivala u ovom dijeluEvrope, pokrenutog s ciljem podr{ke i promocije regionalne ki-nematografije i autora. SFF je i jedinstvena prilika da se na jed-nom mjestu vide najbolji filmovi jugoisto~ne Evrope, ali i svjetskezvijezde. Upravo stoga SFF-u treba zahvaliti {to je august postaocentralni turisti~ki mjesec glavnog grada BiH.

Stoga BiH CITY REVIEW gostima Sarajeva preporu~uje lokacijei objekte koje treba vidjeti.

SIMBOLI GRADA

Prvenstveno, tu je Ba{~ar{ija kao srce starog Sarajeva. [e -taju}i njome moè se uìvati u fragmentima osmanskog Sarajeva.Njena izgradnja je po~ela 1462. godine, a svoj procvat doìvljavau 16. vijeku, kada je na tom mjestu postojalo 80 vrsta zanata, pokojima su i nazvane ulice koje se nalaze na Ba{~ar{iji. Tu je atrak-tivni Sebilj (javna ~esma u obliku kioska), koji je izgra|en 1891.godine u pseudomaurskom stilu, po nacrtu ~e{kog arhitekte Ale-ksandra Viteka. Danas ba{~ar{ijski Sebilj, uz Gradsku vije}nicu,predstavlja najprepoznatljiviji simbol Sarajeva.

Vije}nica, najljep{i objekt izgra|en u pseudomaurskom stilu,znamenitost je Sarajeva koju treba vidjeti. Izgradnja je zavr{ena1896. i prvobitno je sluìla kao sjedi{te gradske uprave. NakonDrugog svjetskog rata u Vije}nici je bila smje{tena Nacionalna biblioteka. Granatirana je 1992. godine i pritom je izgorjelo 90 posto neprocjenjivog kulturnog blaga. Trenutno se vr{i njenarekonstrukcija.

Svakako treba vidjeti i Gazi Husrev-begov bezistan, izgra|enizme|u 1537. i 1555. godine. Pravougaonog je oblika, sa 109 metaradugom ulicom koja prolazi kroz sredinu. Izgledom podsje}a na Misir– ~ar{iju u Istanbulu, odnosno na pokrivene bazare arapskih gradova.

The capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, expectsthe greatest influx of tourists and BiH diaspora coming to visit

their families - in August. And so, August will be the “top month”of this tourist season according to the estimations of experts inthe field of tourism.

However, during August Sarajevo is not only the top destinationfor foreign tourists that come here for fun. Another reason for vis-iting this town is also the Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF) - the mostprestigious festival in this part of Europe that was started with theaim of supporting and promoting regional cinematography andauthors. SFF is also a unique opportunity to watch the greatestmovies of southeastern Europe as well as to encounter world fa-mous stars in one place. We are grateful to SFF for making Au-gust the central tourist month in the capital city of BiH.

BiH CITY REVIEW recommends the visitors to Sarajevo theplaces in town worth seeing.

TOWN SYMBOLS

First of all comes the Ba{~ar{ija as the heart of old Sarajevo.Walking along it one can enjoy in bits and pieces of the OttomanSarajevo. Its construction started in 1462 and the area becameprosperous in the 16th century when there were 80 kinds of hand-crafts in one place, after which the streets on Ba{~ar{ija got theirnames. Another object worth seeing is the Sebilj (public faucetin the shape of a hut) constructed in 1891 in pseudo–Moorishstyle, according to the blueprint of the Czech architect Aleksan-dar Vitek. Today the Sebilj on Ba{~ar{ija, besides the City Hall,represents the most recognizable symbol of Sarajevo.

City Hall, the most beautiful building constructed in pseudo–Moorish style, is one of the sights in Sarajevo worth seeing. Theconstruction was finished in 1896 and first the building servedas the seat of the town authorities. After World War II the CityHall was home to the National Library. In 1992 the building wasbombed and on that occasion 90% of the inestimable culturalvalue burned down in the flames. Its reconstruction is currentlyin progress.

One should also certainly pay a visit to Gazi Husrev-bey’s

bezistan (a covered bazaar) built between 1537 and 1555. It is of

Stari hram, koji je sagra|en 1581. godine, po doseljenju Se-farda u Sarajevo, jedno je od kulturnih blaga koje treba posjetiti.Naime, tada{nji rumelijski beglerbeg dao je 1580. godinenare|enje i finansijska sredstva za izgradnju hrama za Jevrejeprotjerane iz [panije. Sada je u Starom hramu smje{ten MuzejJevreja.

Preporu~ujemo za obilazak i Despi}a ku}u, gra|enu u trirazli~ita perioda, a njen najstariji dio potje~e iz 17. vijeka. Bogatapravoslavna porodica Despi}, ~iji su ~lanovi u njoj organizirali prveklasi~ne pozori{ne predstave u Sarajevu, ku}u je poklonila gradu.Najo~uvaniji primjer kulture stanovanja i ìvljenja u Sarajevu uosmansko doba predstavlja Svrzina ku}a sagra|ena u 18. vi-jeku. Ona je najljep{i spomenik unikatne tradicionalne bosanskearhitekture.

Sarajevski mostovi su tako|er me|u simbolima grada koje sva-kako treba vidjeti. Najstariji, Kozija }uprija, datira jo{ iz vremenanastanka Sarajeva. Me|u najpoznatijim su jo{ i Latinska }uprija,mjesto s kojeg je Gavrilo Princip izvr{io atentat na austrougar-skog prestolonasljednika Franza Ferdinanda i njegovu supruguSofiju Hohenberg. To je bio povod Prvom svjetskom ratu.

VJERSKA BLAGA

Nekoliko vjerskih objekata pravo su kulturno-historijsko blago.To je Gazi Husrev-begova dàmija, najzna~ajniji islamski vjer-ski objekt u BiH. Izgra|ena je 1531. godine, a zadu`bina je GaziHusrev-bega, tada{njeg osmanskog namjesnika. Dàmija pred-stavlja samo dio velike Gazi Husrev-begove ostav{tine.

Stara pravoslavna crkva smje{tena je u blizini Ba{~ar{ije, asagra|ena je u 16. vijeku. Unikatna zbog netipi~ne arhitekture,ova crkva ve} vjekovima ~uva veliko blago u vidu svetih mo{ti iraznih relikvija, a postoji i nekoliko interesantnih legendi o nje-nom nastanku.

Treba vidjeti i Franjeva~ku crkvu sv. Ante Padovanskog

podno Bistrika. Ona je sagra|ena 1914. godine po projektu Jo-sipa Vanca{a, u neogoti~kom stilu. Pored nje su samostan i toranjvisok 43 metra. Interijer je bogat raznim religijskim umjetninama,poput slike “Posljednja ve~era“ autora \ure Sedara.

Nezaobilazna je i Katedrala Srca Isusova, koja je prvostolnacrkva Vrhbosanske nadbiskupije, a sagra|ena je u neogoti~komstilu 1889. godine. Grobnica Josipa Stadlera, vrhbosanskog

The Old Temple - constructed in 1581 after the arrival ofSephards to Sarajevo - it is one of the cultural treasures worth avisitor’s attention. Namely, in 1580 the Rumelian bey ordered theconstruction of a temple for the Jews that were banished fromSpain and donated financial resources therefor. Now, the JewishMuseum is located in the Old Temple.

We also recommend you to visit the Despi}’s House built inthree different periods of which the oldest one dates to the 17th

century. The rich Orthodox family Despi}, whose family membersused to host the first theater plays in Sarajevo in their home, en-dowed the house to the city. The most conserved sample of cul-ture of living in Sarajevo in the Ottoman period is of courseSvrzo’s House from the 18th century. It is the prettiest monu-ment of unique traditional Bosnian architecture.

Bridges are also unique symbols of the town which everyoneshould see. The oldest one - Goat’s Bridge dates to the time ofthe emergence of Sarajevo as a town. Among the most knownones is also the Latin Bridge, the location from which GavriloPrincip made his assassination attempt on the Austro-HungarianCrown Prince Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sofia Hohenberg. Thatevent was the grounds for World War I.

RELIGIOUS TREASURES

There are several religious objects that are true cultural andhistorical values. That is Gazi Husrev – bey’s mosque, the mostsignificant Islamic religious object in BiH. It was built in 1531 andit is property of Gazi Husrev – bey, former Ottoman governor. Themosque represents only one part of the great Gazi Husrev-bey’slegacy.

Vrijedi vidjeti i A{kenasku sinagogu izgra|enu 1902. godine,po projektu Karla Parìka, kao prvi vjerski objekt u pseudomaur-skom stilu – Sabornu crkvu Presvete Bogorodice, koja je inajve}i pravoslavni vjerski objekt u Sarajevu. Projektirao ju je Ma-kedonac Andrija Damjanov, a sagra|ena je 1868. godine, predkraj osmanskog vladanja Bosnom. Interijer je bogato ukra{en or-namentima.

U red prvorazrednih vjerskih objekata kao kulturno-historijskogblaga svakako spada i Careva dàmija. Izgra|ena je 1457. go-dine u ~ast sultana Mehmeda II el-Fatiha, a njenu gradnju fina-nsirao je osniva~ Sarajeva Isa-beg Ishakovi}. Prvobitna drvenakonstrukcija je izgorjela, a dàmija je na zahtjev Sarajlija, a ponare|enju sultana Sulejmana Veli~anstvenog, 1566. godine po-novno izgra|ena.

LJEPOTE OKO SARAJEVA

U okolici Sarajeva tako|er postoje objekti i mjesta koja trebavidjeti. Jedno od njih je ~uveni Tunel spasa. Izgra|en je ispodaerodromske piste 1992. godine i bio je jedina veza Sarajeva sostatkom svijeta za vrijeme ~etverogodi{nje opsade. Danas je diotunela otvoren za posjete.

Vrelo Bosne je jedno od najja~ih izvori{ta u BiH i okruèno jeprelijepim parkom. Tri kilometra dugom alejom povezano je sIlidòm, koja je po svojim izvori{tima termalne vode poznata jo{od rimskog doba. Vrelo Bosne ve} ~itavo stolje}e sluì kao izleti{te

The Old Orthodox Church is located near Ba{~ar{ija and itwas built in the 16th century. It is unique because of the unusualarchitecture and this church has for centuries kept great treasurein the form of saint relics, and there are also several interestinglegends about its emergence.

One should also see the Franciscan church of Saint Ante

Padovanski at the bottom of Bistrik. It was built in 1914 and de-signed by Josip Vanca{ in neo-gothic style. Beside it are amonastery and a 43-meter-high tower. Its interior is enriched withvarious religious works of art such as the painting “Last dinner”by the author \uro Sedar.

A must-see is also the Cathedral of the Heart of Jesus,which is the first church of the Bosnian archdiocese built in neo-gothic style in 1889. The crypt of Josip Stradler, Bosnian arch-bishop from the beginning of the 20th century, who initiated theconstruction of this building, is located in the Cathedral.

Also worth our mention is Aachen’s synagogue built in 1902and designed by Karlo Parìk, as well as the first religious objectdone in pseudo-Moorish style – the Church of Saint Mary, whichis the largest Orthodox religious object in Sarajevo. It was de-signed by the Macedonian Andrija Damjanov and built in 1868just before the end of the Ottoman Empire era in Bosnia. Its in-terior is enriched by ornaments.

Tzar’s mosque certainly belongs to the array of first-class re-ligious objects of both cultural and historical value. It was built in1457 in the honor of Sultan Mehmed II el-Fatih, and its construc-tion was financed by the founder of Sarajevo, Isa-bey Ishakovi}.Its first structure was burned and the mosque, to the request ofSarajevo’s citizens and according to the order of Sultan Sulejmanthe Great, was built again in 1566.

BEAUTIES AROUND SARAJEVO

In the outskirts of Sarajevo there are also objects and placesworth seeing. One of them is the famous Tunnel of Rescue. Itwas built below the airport runway in 1992 and it was the onlyconnection of Sarajevo with the outside world during the four-year long siege. Today, one part of the tunnel is open to visitors.

Spring of the river Bosna is one of the most powerful springsin BiH and it is surrounded by a beautiful park. A three-kilometerlong alley leads to Ilidà - which is known for its springs of ther-mal water from the Roman period. For over one century the springof river Bosna has served as a popular outing spot for citizensfrom Sarajevo and as place for relaxation and recreation. Ilidà is

Kraljeva Sutjeska je nekada{nje stolno mjesto srednjovje-kovne Bosne. Na mjestu nekada{njeg dvora nalazi se franjeva~kisamostan koji posjeduje zbirke predmeta iz 15. vijeka i od veli-kog je zna~aja za kulturnu historiju Bosne. Kraljeva Sutjeska senalazi blizu Kaknja.

Bijambarska cave is an interesting natural phenomenon be-cause of its length (420 meters) and naturally formed hallsadorned with stalactites and stalagmites. It is surrounded withpinewood forests and springs and meadows and in front of the en-trance to the cave there is a picturesque little lake. A popular out-ing spot for people from Sarajevo – the Bijambarska cave is located43 kilometers away from Sarajevo in the direction to Tuzla.

King’s Sutjeska was the former headquarters of medievalBosnia. On the place of the former castle now rests the Francis-can monastery collection featuring exhibits from the 15th century,which is very significant for the history of culture in Bosnia. King’sSutjeska is located near Kakanj.

Sarajevo je dobilo olimpijski bazen, prvi olimpijski objektizgra|en nakon Olimpijade 1984. godine. Rije~ je o zatvorenom

50-metarskom bazenu Otoka – Meander koji je do sada najve}i inajzna~ajniji, kapitalni projekt Grada Sarajeva.

Lokacija objekta odre|ena je urbanisti~kim rje{enjem i obuhva tapovr{inu od 3.600 m2. Sam objekt je ukupne povr{ine 7.567,06 m2

i u svom sastavu ima etaù suterena, zatim instalacijsku etaù,prizemlje, me|uetaù - mezanin, prvi i drugi sprat. Unutra{nja or-ganizacija prostora kao i samo funkcioniranje objekta veoma sujednostavni i fleksibilni, tako da je kori{tenje objekta predvi|enou vi{e svrha: rekreacija, takmi~enje, edukacija.

U prostoru prizemlja smje{teni su olimpijski bazen povr{ine1.356,30m2 i rekreacioni bazen povr{ine 234,40m2, dok se na pr -v om spratu nalaze tribine sa ukupno 558 sjedi{ta. U ostalim eta -` a ma nalaze se sadràji n e o p-h odni za funkcioniranje obj e -kta, kao {to su klima-komore,bazenska tehnika, kotlovnica,skladi{ta hl ora, centralni nad -zor, zatim i neophodni prate}iprostori - kupa tila, sanitarije,sv la~ionice, prostori za zdrav-stveno osoblje, garderobe, re-porterske kabine, fitnes-sale,saune, frizerski salon, liftovskapo strojenja, prodavnice, kance-l arije, sale, bifei i komunikacije.

Olimpijski bazen na Otoci za-dovoljava standarde Svjetskepliva~ke federacije i u njemu }ese organizirati me|unarodnatakmi~enja u plivanju.

Sarajevo has got its first Olympic swimming pool - the firstOlympic facility built after the Olympic Games in 1984. The

object in question is an indoor 50-meter-long swimming poolOtoka–Meander, and is up to now the major and most importantproject of the City of Sarajevo.

The location of the object was determined by an urban project,and the edifice covers an area of 3,600 m2. The building is 7.567,06m2 large and it comprises a ground floor, basement, mezzanine floor,and first and second floors. Izgradnjom ovog bazena, Grad Sarajevo doprinosi smanjenjubroja nepliva~a u Sarajevu i afirmaciji sportova na vodi.

Ukupna investicija ovog projekta je 15,5 miliona KM. Grad Sa-rajevo je najve}i investitor sa 11,5 miliona KM, Kanton Sarajevo jeosigurao 3,5 miliona i Vlada Federacije BiH 1 milion KM. Izvo|a~radova bilo je preduze}e „Unigradnja“.

Formirano je Javno preduze}e Olimpijski bazen Otoka. U tokuje izbor organa Nadzornog odbora, nakon ~ega }e se pristupitiizboru direktora te popuni najnu`nijeg osoblja u ovoj godini, odradnika na sigurnosti do onih koji }e opslu`ivati bazen.

Olimpijski bazen na Otoci u Sarajevu gra|evinski je zavr{en 1.jula, u toku je tehni~ki prijem, a po dobijanju upotrebne dozvoleotvaranje bazena o~ekuje se do kraja augusta.

The Olympic swimming pool in Otoka satisfies the standardsof the World Swimming Federation, and international swimmingcompetitions will be organized here.

Through the construction of this pool the City of Sarajevo con-tributes to the reduction of the number of non-swimmers in Sara-jevo, and affirms water sports.

The total investment of this project is 15.5 million BAM. TheCity of Sarajevo is the major investor with 11.5 million BAM; Can-ton Sarajevo has secured 3.5 million and the Government of theFederation of Bosnia and Herzegovina 1 million BAM, respectively.The contractor of the works was the company “Unigradnja”.

Additionally, Public company Olympic pool Otoka has been es-tablished. The selection of Supervisory Board members is ongo-ing, after which the director and the most needed staff for thisyear will be selected - from security workers to those who will bein charge of maintenance.

The construction of the Olympic swimming pool object inOtoka, Sarajevo was completed on July 1. The process of ob-taining the technical permit is ongoing, and the opening of theswimming pool is expected by the end of August upon gainingthe utilization permit.

Tradicionalni, 13. festival “Ba{~ar{ijske no}i 2008”, koji je pre-ra stao u najve}i ljetni festival kulture u BiH, sve~ano je otvo-

ren 1. jula na Centralnoj pozornici – Vije}nica koncertom “Ve~efrancuske muzike”. Organizatori Festivala su na taj na~in poz-dravili preuzimanje Francuske predsjedanjem u narednih {estmjeseci EU, a izraze zahvalnosti tom festivalskom ~inu iskazalaje ambasadorica Francuske u BiH Maryse Berniau.

Koncert je po~eo svjetskom praizvedbom opere “Lyssi” EricaBretona, velikog prijatelja i ~estog gosta Sarajeva, koji se kompo -ni raju}i ovu operu opredijelio za njenu scensku praizvedbu u Sa-r ajevu. Uz Sarajevsku filharmoniju, pod dirigentskom palicomEri ca Bretona, nastupili su solisti iz Francuske Nathalie Fabre,Sarah Laulan, Alexandre Swan, te iz BiH Aida ôrbadì}-Valka,De n i za Ðipa, Dejan Kajevi}. The traditional 13th festival “Ba{~ar{ija’s evenings 2008“ thathas grown into the greatest summer festival of culture in BiH

was opened on July 1 on the Central stage–City Hall by the con-cert “Evening of French music”. Thereby, the organizers of thefestival welcomed the French presidency of the EU for the next sixmonths, and the French Ambassador to BiH, Maryse Berniau ex-pressed her gratitude for this event.

The concert started by the world preprimary performance of theopera “Lyssi” by Eric Breton, a great friend and frequent guest ofSarajevo, who chose this opera to be performed in Sarajevo. Be-sides the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Eric Bretonthe audience enjoyed in the performances of soloists from France:Nathalie Fabre, Sarah Laulan, Alexandre Swan, and from Bosnia andHerzegovina: Aida orbadì}-Valka, Deniza Ðipa, Dejan Kajevi}. Sub-sequently, BiH and foreign artists performed popular opera arias andcompositions by great French authors. “The most beautiful melo -dies” was performed jointly by Sarajevo Philharmonic and the operasoloists Adema Pljevljak-Krehi}, Aida ôrbadì}-Valka, ArmandoPuklavec, while the conductor was Tomislav Fa~ini.

The total of 38 programs within the festival lasting from July1 to 31 offered citizens as well as numerous guests and touristsof Sarajevo an array of both international and BiH artistic cre-ativity. Especially valuable was the arrival of the famous artistand author Joan Baez, who had a concert on the Central stage–City Hall on July 16. This was the first arrival of the great artistand proved friend of Sarajevo after April of 1993, when she per-formed in the surrounded Sarajevo.

na Centralnoj pozornici - Vije}nica. Bio je to prvi dolazak velikeumjetnice i osvjedo~enog prijatelja Sarajeva poslije aprila 1993.godine, kada je nastupala u opkoljenom Sarajevu.

Ljubitelji muzike uìvali su i u solisti~kom koncertu najboljegnacionalnog turskog umjetnika duhovne muzike (ilahija) AhmetaOzhana, pjesmama Gorana Karana, grupe Sarr e Roma. Speci-fikum ovogodi{njeg festivala je nastup @enskog zbora “Arabeske”iz Zagreba, zajedno sa ~lanovima grupe Zabranjeno pu{enje. Ka-merni guda~ki ansambl svojim koncertom obiljeìo je 50 godinapostojanja Muzi~ke omladine Sarajevo.

UMJETNICI IZ CIJELOG SVIJETA

Na Festivalu „Ba{~ar{ijske no}i 2008“ gostovalo je 1.600 iz vo |a -~a iz preko 20 zemalja. Iz Evrope, Azije, Amerike i Australije su dje-lovalo je 600 umjetnika. Nastupili su u zanimljivim i raznovrs nimpro gramima duhovne i etno muzike, popa i rocka, sevdalinki, likovnimi knji evnim programima, koncertima folklornih ansambala te muzi~ko-scenskim programima za djecu. Posebno zanimljiv bio je program zadje cu Pokretnog pozori{ta pod nazivom “Za bolje sutra” u kojem jebilo ~ak 450 izvo|a~a – najmla|ih umjetnika, grupa i ansambala.

Sarajevo je u julu odisalo posebnom festivalskom atmosferomjer su programi izvo|eni na desetak razli~itih lokaliteta u gradu.Na Centralnoj pozornici – Vije}nica, Kur{umli medresi, Kolobaraha nu, Svrzinoj ku}i, Bo{nja~kom institutu, Muzi~koj akademiji, uDomu Oruànih snaga BiH, ljetnim ba{tama i dvoranama, na pla-tou ispred Katedrale, u Muzeju Jevreja i Galeriji “Novi hram”, Artgaleriji Dobrinja, parku Atmejdan, na trgovima i ulicama bile suBa{~ar{ijske no}i.

Tako je glavni grad BiH bio ~itavih mjesec dana me|unarodnicentar kulture, umjetni~kog stvarala{tva, mostova saradnje i pri-jateljstva zemalja ~itavog svijeta. Potvr|uje to i podatak da jepro{le godine, na 12. festivalu u Sarajevu, gostovalo oko 8.000umjetnika iz cijelog svijeta.

Zbog kvalitetnih programa, otvorenih scena i atraktivnih prostorana kojima se oni odràvaju i posjeta festivalu je velika. U proteklimgodinama ove programe je gledalo vi{e od 1,5 milion posjetilaca.

Music lovers enjoyed in the solo concert of the best nationalTurkish artist of Islamic spiritual music (ilahije) Ahmet Ozhan; inthe songs by Goran Karan, and the band Sarr e Roma. A specialcharacteristic about this year’s festival was the joint performanceof the Female choir “Arabeske“ from Zagreb with the members ofthe band Smoking forbidden (Zabranjeno pu{enje). Finally, theconcert of the String ensemble marked 50 years of existence ofthe association Music Youth Sarajevo.

ARTIST FROM ALL AROUND THE WORLD

1,600 performers from over 20 countries took part in the fes-tival. 600 artists from Europe, Asia, America and Australia par-ticipated in the festival “Ba{~ar{ija’s evenings 2008”.

Participants were part of interesting and manifold programs ofspiritual and ethno music, pop and rock, Bosnian traditional lovesongs, painting and literature programs, concerts of folklore en-sembles and musical and theater performances for children. Par-ticularly interesting was the program for children by the TravelingTheater titled “For a better tomorrow”, in which there were 450performers – of the youngest artists, groups and ensembles.

In July Sarajevo was marked by a festive atmosphere becausethe programs were performed on a dozen of different locationsin the city, some of which were: Central stage–City Hall, Kur{umlimedresa, Kolobara, Svrza’s house, Bosnjak Institute, Music Acad-emy, House of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, var-ious summer outdoor cafes and halls, the plateau in front of theCathedral, the Jewish Museum, Gallery “New Temple”, ArtGallery Dobrinja, Park Atmejdan, as well as on the squares andstreets of town.

And so the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina was for awhole month an international center of culture, artistic creation,and a bridge of cooperation and friendship of countries through-out the world. This is also confirmed by the fact that, last year,8,000 artists from all around the world participated in the 12th

festival in Sarajevo.The festival is well visited because of its quality of programs,

open stages and attractive venues. More than 1.5 million visitorshave attended the festival in the past years.

Banja Luka je me|u najljep{im i najzanimljivijim gradovimaBosne i Hercegovine i, naravno, najve}im.

Banja Luka is among the most beautiful and interesting citiesin Bosnia and Herzegovina and, of course, one of the biggest

ones, too. The town is one big family of houses and buildings lined along

opposite coasts between which flows the blue-green river Vrbasstumbling against tuff and stones.

On the east side the morning sun of Star~evica lights with itsgolden-yellow beams the city streets spread like the branches ofa big tree, while not forgetting even the shortest street by the“Ninon” where, while drinking their morning espresso, peoplechat about the courage and skills of the first jumpers from theTown’s bridge for setting the “record of the gang” or for gettingrounds of applause from the audience.

As soon as people start feeling summer knocking on the door,begins the promenade of that year’s freshers and their trying to be-come friends with older groups on the beaches “Abacija”, “Green”,“Cold Spring”, which are since recently watched by river lifeguards.

In the park children are hiding silver fish in the dripping water ofthe fountain, tucking them somewhere among the swirls of time,while the drops of water get scattered in the beautiful colors ofsummer accompanied by the silent babble of sunflowers, hibiscusand the alluring smell of bloomed roses from the nearby arrangedwindows, entrance gates and balconies...

On the other side of the street by “Boska”, the water in themo dern fountain grows unusually fast in the morning light acco -m panied by the sounds of street tambura - and accordion playersfar away from the loud voices from the nearby square, where anever-lasting rival chess game among amateur players of this an-cient game is taking place.

EVENING IN GOSPODSKA

A sirocco is moving through the open doors of the roaring squarebursting of the very first mimosa and summer T-shirts in joyful col-ors moving across the [olajina Street; the Nata{as, Marijanas,Ivanas, and Sanelas got their colorful outfits from the shop-win-dows above the most crowded street in town – Gospodska Street.

And Gospodska is the street whose name Mr. Raduovi}, a mer-chant, once wrote on a wooden panel that he posted on his shopso people would know that he was the initiator of something new,beautiful and unusual – something “European”.

The street is roaring with myriad of shoe sounds of pride ownersstrolling down the street engaged in lively conversations about jobsand where to go out for the evening - discussing whether to go to aconcert in Banski Dvor or to a ’’live’’ performance of one of the nu-merous music bands; or rather go visit one of the galleries to seesome of the latest exhibitions of photography by famous artists, or atlast to stop by Hotel Bosnia to, in the shade of the chestnut tree, con-tinue chatting while having a large pint of the very best beer.

In this popular evening destination, under the many lights com-ing from the buildings of the Municipality, all those who wish to beseen will meet both popular and some less popular but carefree wa -l kers no matter their smile, wallet, rain, hurry, or the crowd... And,of course, all will be wearing the colors of Banja Luka’s summer.

Ono {to su u knjièvnosti bosanskohercegova~koj Ivo Andri} iMe{a Selimovi} zajedno, to je u televiziji ovih prostora bio Jan

Beran. Banjalu~anin koji je uvijek i rado dolazio u svoj grad. Bioje umjetnik i majstor kome je naprosto bilo nemogu}e odreditispecijalnost. Naime, Janu Beranu, ili „tati Janu“ kako su ga zvalemla|e kolege, s punim uvaàvanjem pripada odrednica polihistoraodnosno enciklopediste...

@ivot Jana Berana, kako je ~esto pri~ao, odre|en je ro|enjem1927. godine u Banjoj Luci – gradu koji ima tvr|avu i rijeku. To suklju~ne odrednice ~itavog njegovog budu}eg umjetni~kog ìvotaodnosno stvarala{tva. Jan Beran bio je podjednako i na osobenna~in nenadma{an pisac, fotograf, scenarista, snimatelj i reìser,arheolog i dramaturg, pjesnik, slikar i prevodilac.

Beran je pionir poslijeratne jugoslavenske i bosanskohercego va -~ke kinematografije, i jedan je od osniva~a televizije na ovim pros -to rima. Te{ko da bi se mogli sabrati svi njegovi kratkometra`ni,dokumentarni i umjetni~ki televizijski filmovi u kojima su, po ljepotii originalnoj ekspresivnosti, prepoznatljivi kadrovi Jana Berana.

Ovaj Banjalu~anin, koji je snimio vi{e od tri stotine filmskih ko-ma da, jo{ za ìvota je dobio naziv „pjesnik kamere“. I danas, pet-na est godina nakon smrti 1993. godine, na recentnim filmskimakademijama Evrope studenti prou~avaju Berana i prepoznaju gaupravo po sinonimu „pjesnik kamere“.

Pomenusmo tvr|avu i rijeku na po~etku ovog mini eseja; tvr|avei rijeke, kule i gradine, ste}ci, jezera i rijeke Bosne i Hercegovine bilisu vje~ita inspiracija ovog umjetnika i marljivog kolekcionara ar-heolo{kih artefakata i etnolo{ke odnosno folklorne tradicije ovih pro-stora. Sve to, a osobito legende, ~ika Jan je pretakao u sliku isvjetlost, rije~ i muziku nenadma{ne i neponovlji ve ljepote.

Dovoljno je re}i da je sedamdesetih godina pro{loga vijeka fran-cuska televizija po~etkom godine – unaprijed i „na nevi|eno“- otkupljivala sve {to bi Jan Beran iznjedrio.

A podjednako uspje{no je pisao: njegov putopis „Sanovnikzavi~ajnih predjela“ antologijsko je i kultno {tivo, ba{ kao i isto-

When it comes to television in these areas it is safe to say thatJan Beran is twice as important as Ivo Andri} and Me{a Se-

limovi} are for Bosnian literature when taken together. He wasborn in Banja Luka and always gladly returned to his hometown.He was both an artist and a master for whom it was impossibleto define an area of expertise. Jan Beran or «papa Jan», as hisyounger colleagues like to call him, may well be described as oneof the most respected scholars and historians there is…

The life of Jan Beran, as he often pointed out, was defined byhis birth in Banja Luka in 1927 – the city with a river and a fort.These were the key factors that determined his future artistic lifeand work. Jan Beran was also, and that in a specific way, an ex-traordinary writer, photographer, script writer, cameraman & di-rector, archaeologist, poet, and translator.

Beran was a pioneer in the post-war BiH cinematography, andone of the founders of television in this region. It would be hardto list all of his TV films, documentary and artistic, which are rec-ognizable by the beautiful and original expression of Jan Beran.

This citizen of Banja Luka that filmed more than 300 films gotthe nickname «poet of the camera» during his lifetime. Even today,15 years after his death in 1993, European film academy studentsstudy about Beran and recognize him by this very nickname.

I mentioned a fort and a river at the beginning of this shortessay; forts and rivers, towers and walls, Bosnian medieval head-stones, and lakes were a never-ending inspiration to this artistand collector of this region’s archaeological and ethnologicalpieces. All this, and legends in particular, were turned to life in thework of Jan through painting and light, and words and music ofinsuperable beauty.

It is enough to say that, in the 70s, French television would atthe start of each year buy whatever Jan Beran would make – inadvance and without even seeing it.

His written work was equally successful: his book „A Dream In-terpreter of Native Landscapes“ is an anthological and cult book,

rijski roman „Hrabren“ ili zbirka pripovjedaka „Pri~e Ta{lihana“.Beranove pozori{ne drame izvo|ene su s velikim uspjehom, a ne-izbrisivo u sje}anju ostaje „Ba{eskija“.

Zna se i zbog ~ega: u skromnom i neumornom hroni~aru sa-rajevske i pro{losti Bosne i Hercegovine – Mula Mustafi Ba{eskiji– Jan Beran je, zapravo, prepoznao sebe i svoj rad...

Beran je svoja televizijska i filmska ostvarenja predstavljaoisklju~ivo u crno-bijeloj tehnici. Unato~ tome, gledalac je kadrovedoìvljavao „u koloru“, sa punim spektrom boja i nijansi. Takavutisak ostajao bi nakon gledanja svih Beranovih filmova – bili oniiz oblasti nauke i kulture, ili pak umjetnosti...

Iza Jana je ostala ogromna umjetni~ka zaostav{tina koju }etrebati godinama specificirati odnosno popisivati. To je funduskoji zasluùje osnivanje jednog instituta za multidisciplinarno, anaravno i multimedijalno izu~avanje, sistematizaciju i valorizacijuonoga {to je ostavio Jan Beran – banjalu~ki Sarajlija i sarajevskiBanjalu~anin.

Ta ba{tina nadilazi prostore Balkana i zasluùje za{titu nesamo njegovog rodnog grada i Sarajeva nego i ovog dijela Evrope.Bez imalo pretjerivanja.

Danas je to neprocjenjivo blago sakriveno u polutami sarajev-skih tavana i podruma.

Porodica Jana Berana spremna je njegovo stvarala~ko, kolek-cionarsko, slikarsko, arheolo{ko i umjetni~ko naslije|e vratiti uBeranov rodni grad, u Banju Luku, uz uslov da se ono smjesti uadekvatan prostor i bude dostupno svima.

Zasluìli su to i Jan Beran i njegova Banja Luka, ali i Sarajevo.

And the reason is known: Jan Beran actually recognized him-self and his work in the humble and unfaltering chronicle writerof the Sarajevo and BiH past: Mula Mustafa Ba{eskija.

Beran presented his TV and film works in black and white only.Despite that the viewer experienced his scenes «in full color».And just that was the specific feature of all of Beran’s films nomatter whether they were scientific, cultural, or artistic…

Jan left behind an enormous range of work that will take yearsto record and classify. It is a collection that deserves the estab-lishment of an institute for multidisciplinary and multimedia study,and the systematization and valorization of what Jan Beran– theBanja Luka citizen of Sarajevo and the Sarajevo citizen of BanjaLuka in one – left behind.

His legacy surpasses the Balkans, and as such dese r ves theprotection of not only his hometown and Sarajevo but of this partof Europe, too. No overdoing whatsoever.

Today his legacy remains an invaluable treasure hidden in thedarkness of Sarajevo’s attics and basements.

Jan Beran’s family is willing to return his entire legacy of paint-ing, archaeology and art back to the city of his bi r th - Banja Luka,under the condition that it will be situated in an appropriate repos-itory and made available for everybody.

Jan Beran and his Banja Luka deserve it, and so does Sarajevo.


Kastel - Jan je ìvio izme|u tvr|ave i rijeke

Da BiH ima zna~ajne turisti~ke potencijale potvr|uje i po-

datak Svjetske turisti~ke organizacije prema kojem se BiH

nalazi na 78. mjestu po rastu turizma do 2015. godine, dok

je prije samo deset godina bila na 175. mjestu.

Unato~ toj ~injenici te svim va`nim pretpostavkama za razvoj tur-izma, problem sive ekonomije u BiH i zakonske regulative je ve-

lika ko~nica za brì napredak. Samo broj dolazaka i no}enja turistau na{oj zemlji prema nekim procjenama i pet puta je ve}i od pri-javljenih. Potvr|uje to i podatak da u BiH ima slu`beno prijavljenooko 20 tisu}a kreveta, a zna se da ih samo u Me|ugorju ima 15tisu}a. Sve to govori koliko dràva gubi novaca u sivoj ekonomiji.

Vlada Federacije je na prijedlog federalnog ministra okoli{a i tur-

i zma dr. Nevenka Hercega pro{log mjeseca razmatrala informacijeiz oblasti turizma, o ostvarenim prihodima od naplate boravi{ne pri-stojbe i mjerama za pobolj{anje njezine naplate, kao i turisti~ke ~la-narine. Vlada je prihvatila prijedlog resornog ministarstva da se u r nopristupi izmjenama uredbi uz zadràvanje razine izdvajanja za kulturno-povijesno i prirodno naslije|e. Vlada je ponovila nu`nost do -no{enja novog zakona o turisti~kim zajednicama i promociji turiz mau Federaciji BiH, koji se nalazi u parlamentarnoj proceduri, a kojim}e se obnoviti utemeljenje op}inskih turisti~kih zajednica, kako bise jedinice lokalne samouprave dodatno motivirale za oblast turiz ma,{to je ujedno i zahtjev Saveza op}ina i gradova u Federaciji BiH.

U cilju uvo|enja vi{e reda u naplatu boravi{ne pristojbe i turi-sti~ke ~lanarine Vlada FBiH je obvezala mjerodavne inspekcijskeslu`be na poja~anu kontrolu kako ubiranja tako i raspodjele pri-stojbi, prijave gostiju, registriranja djelatnosti, te razvrstavanja ika tegorizacije ugostiteljskih objekata. U sklopu priprema za slje -de }u turisti~ku sezonu, a u skladu sa zakonskim obvezama da sevisina boravi{ne pristojbe utvr|uje u prvoj polovici teku}e za na- re dnu godinu, Vlada je na prijedlog federalnog ministra okoli{a iturizma usvojila odluke kojima se utvr|uje visina boravi{nih pri-stojbi ovisno o koeficijentima turisti~kog mjesta.

Andrija Kre{i}, direktor Turisti~ke zajednice Hercego va~ko-

neretvanske ùpanije, isti~e kako bi situacija u turizmu bilapuno bolja kada se pla}ala boravi{na pristojba jer od prihoda odnje 60 posto se vra}a izravno u turizam.

That BiH has valuable tourism potentials is corroborated by

statistics of the World’s Tourism Organization according to

which BiH is on the 78th position for its tourism growth till

year 2015, whereas only 10 years ago it was 175th on the list.

Despite the above mentioned and all the important precondi-tions for tourism development, the problem of informal econ-

omy in BiH is a huge development stopper. Just the number ofvisits and sleepovers of tourists in our country is, according tocertain estimates, five times greater than what has been re-ported. This is also corroborated by data that claim that BiH has20 thousand beds reported, while it is known that Me|ugorjealone has 15 thousand beds. This says it all about the amount ofmoney that the country loses through informal activities.

Suggested by the Federal Minister of Environment and Tourism

Dr. Nevenko Herceg the Government of the Federation last monthconsidered tourism information about the revenues from acco -mmodation and the measures to increase it, as well as touristfees. The Government accepted the suggestion of the Ministry toquickly approach the amendments to regulations keeping the levelof funds separated for cultural and historical and natural heritage.The Government reminded to the necessity to enact a new lawabout tourism communities and the promotion of tourism in FBiH,that is now in parliamentary procedure, and which will restore theestablishment of municipal tourism communities to additionallymotivate the units of local management in the tourism area, whichis also demanded by the Union of Municipalities and Cities of FBiH.

With the intention to put order in the charging for accommodationand tourist fees, the Government of FBiH committed the inspectionservices to increase control over the collection and distribution of ac-commodation, guest reporting, activity registration, sorting and cat-egorization of tourism objects. Within the preparations for the nexttourist season and according to the legal obligations to set the ac-commodation price for the next year in the first half of the current,the Government accepted the decision to set the price level of ac-commodation depending on the coefficient of the tourist place.

- Postoji puno neprijavljenih objekata, a posebice u Me|ugorju.Tamo gdje je hotel, u knjigama je to samo livada, i kako onda tuposlati inspekciju - isti~e Kre{i}, dodaju}i kako turisti~ko-ugosti-teljski inspektori na razini op}ina, ùpanija i entiteta zaduèni zanaplatu rade i da se to sve vi{e osjeti.

Prema njegovim rije~ima nakon obnove Starog mosta i njegovaupisa na UNESCO-ov popis za{ti}ene spomeni~ke ba{tine, Mo-star je posjetilo preko milijun turista, ali to, na àlost, nisu podacikoji se temelje na prijavama. Glede turisti~kih pristojbi, kao pro-blem Kre{i} isti~e ~injenicu da su federalnim zakonom jo{ 2003.godine ukinute turisti~kezajednice na razini op }i -na i gradova, tako ne po-sto ji njihov interes zanji hovo prikupljanje jerprihod od turisti~ke pri-stojbe ne ide lokalnimzajednicama nego Fede-raciji i ùpanijama.

I federalni ministar Ne-venko Herceg ukazuje naaktualni problem.

- Boravi{na pristojba je najva`nija, i u pravilu treba biti naj-izda{niji prihod turisti~kih zajednica, iz kojeg se financira pro-mocija i razvoj turisti~kih proizvoda - isti~e Herceg, uz opaskukako posljednjih godina naplata pristojbe iznosi tek 20 posto, kaoi da je prakti~no svaki drugi gost neprijavljen, tako da se izbjegavai pla}anje pristojbe.

- There are many unregistered objects especially in Me|ugorje.Hotels are registered as only land, and how is it possible to sendinspection teams to such locations – states Kre{i}, adding thatthe tourism-catering inspectors at the municipal and county levelhave been put in charge for collecting money, and the effect is al-ready noticeable.

According to his words, after the restoration of the Old Bridgeand its inclusion to UNESCO’s list of protected monumental her-

itage, Mostar was visited by a milliontourists but unfortunately this is not databased on reports. As for tourist accommo-dation, Kre{i} emphasizes the removal oftourism communities at the municipal andcity level by the Federal law in 2003, as aproblem, because they have no interest inthe collection of revenues as it does not goto municipalities directly but to the Federa-tion and the cantons.

The Federal Minister Nevenko Herceg,also emphasizes this problem.

- Accommodation is the most important issue and by rule itshould be the largest source of revenue for tourism communitiesfrom which the promotion and development of tourism products isfinanced - emphasized Herceg adding that the revenue collectionof the last years amounted only to 20%, and that every secondguest is unregistered, so paying the accommodation fee is avoided.

Federalni ministar okoli{a i turizma dr. Nevenko Herceg i savjetnik ministra

Tomislav Luki} te predstavnici civilnog dru{tva i nevladinih udruga razgova-

rali su o provo|enju projekta „Za{ti}ena podru~ja u funkciji odrìvog razvitka“.

Predstavnici udruga uklju~enih u provedbu ovog projekta, koordinator Centra ci-vilnih inicijativa Zoran Adàip, Marinko Dalmatin iz udruge „Lijepa na{a“

âpljina, @eljka Prskalo, voditeljica turisti~kog ureda Parka prirode Hutovo blato,i Ivan Bunti}, predstavnik @upanijskog ministarstva okoli{a i turizma Herce-gova~ko-neretvanske ùpanije, o ovoj temi razgovarali su 9. srpnja na sastanku sministrom Hercegom.

Predstavnici CCI-a i ostali dali su sna`nu potporu ministru i Federalnom mini-starstvu okoli{a i turizma na cijelom nizu aktivnosti izrade i usvajanju Strategijebiolo{ke i krajobrazne raznolikosti BiH, Strategije za{tite okoli{a FBiH i Strategijerazvoja turizma FBiH. Podràna je i aktivnost izrade master planova za pojedinapodru~ja koja svojom kulturnom i prirodnom ba{tinom predstavljaju nepresu{an po-tencijal u razvoju ruralnog turizma, ali istovremeno povezan s aktivnom za{titom.Podràli su i pokrenutu inicijativu izmjene zakona vezanih za funkcioniranje turi-sti~kih zajednica, ugostiteljstva i za{tite okoli{a.

Posebna tema razgovora je bila uklju~ivanje institucija civilnog dru{tva u procesevalorizacije prirodnih vrijednosti kroz progla{enje za{ti}enih prirodnih podru~ja,gdje NVO-i mogu odigrati klju~nu ulogu u ja~anju svijesti o odrìvom kori{tenju iza{titi prirodnih vrijednosti.

The meeting with Minister Herceg was heldon July 9, and the attendees were members

of various social associations that are involvedin the implementation of the project, such asthe coordinator of the Center for Civil InitiativesZoran Adàip, Marinko Dalmatin from the or-ganization “Our beautiful” âpljina, @eljka Prs -

kalo, head of the tourist office of Nature ParkHutovo blato, and Ivan Bunti}, representative ofthe County Department for Tou rism and Environ -ment of the Hercegova~ko-neretvanska County.

Representatives of the CCI and others gavestrong support to both the Minister and the Fed-eral Ministry of Environment and Tourism in theform of various activities related to the makingand implementation of the Strategy for Biologi-cal Diversity of BiH, Strategy for Protection ofthe Environment in FBiH, and Strategy forTourism Development in FBiH. Moreover, theyexpressed their willingness to support activitiesrelated to the making of master plans for cer-tain areas that, through their cultural and nat-ural heritage, represent unfaltering potential forthe development of rural tourism, but are inneed of active protection at the same time. An-other issue covered by the meeting was supportfor the started initiative for the amendment ofregulations related to the functioning of tourismassociations, hospitality and environmental pro-tection.

A particular topic of discussion was turnedtowards the need for counting with institutionsand social organizations to get involved in theprocesses of assigning value to natural heritagethrough the proclamation of protected areaswherein nongovernmental organizations canplay a major role in the form of strengtheningconsciousness about the protection of naturalvalues.

Up to now the cooperation between the non-governmental sector and the Federal Ministryof Environment and Tourism has been very sat-isfying– verified Minister Herceg, and addedthat the strengthening of social organizationsand their logistics making them more accessi-ble to people will enhance that cooperation fur-ther into successful and tangible projects suchas the current ones.

Mayor of Mostar Ljubo Be{li} signed contracts between the

City of Mostar and 12 contracting companies for the restora-

tion of 28 collective residential buildings on the area of

Mostar, and the building of the Music school on the Musala.

Atotal of 11,41 million BAM of funds has been collected for thisproject, and 10,82 million BAM worth contracts have been

sealed. The financial resources have been granted by the City ofMostar, the Herzegovina-Neretva municipality, the Government ofFBiH, and the Government of RS. The signing of the agreement ofco-financing with the Council of Ministers of BiH is expected totake place soon, which would provide an additional 1,5 millionBAM for this renovation project on the area of Mostar.

Mayor Be{li} emphasizes the importance of this significantproject for which they have been preparing for three years be-cause of the need to settle property law issues, developing proj-ect documentation, obtaining permits for the execution of theworks and, of course, gathering the financial resources therefor.

The plan is to carry out the restoration with the City of Mostarbeing the carrier of the restoration of the common spaces of thebuildings, and requiring UNDP to finish the interiors and ensurethe distribution of keys to the occupants. The works should com-mence very soon, just after the City makes the initial payment,and the time period specified is six months to one year.

According to the words of Be{li}, this project covers therestoration of 192 apartments, which will surely contribute to thesolving of the problem of internally displaced citizens, but willalso contribute to the economic development of Mostar and theregion because the companies hired to execute the works arefrom Herzegovina.

The Minister of Social Policy, Dis-placed Persons and Refugees of theGovernment of FBiH Edin Mu{i} con-gratulated the city authorities on thismajor and demanding project recog-nized by the Federal Government as im-portant, and emphasized that, after itsrealization and the return of refugees,the appearance of Mostar’s center willbe enhanced. In the name of all workperformers Alija \uli}, director of thecompany „Grazit“ expressed gratitudefor the dedicated trust and promisedquality and prompt work.

Sporazum predvi|a da se obnova radi po principu da Grad Mo-star bude nositelj obnove zajedni~kih prostorija zgrada, a da }eUNDP dovr{avati unutra{njost i osigurati podjelu klju~eva stana-rima. Po~etak radova trebao bi biti vrlo skoro, nakon {to Graduplati avans, a rok za obnovu zgrada je {est mjeseci, odnosnogodinu dana.

Prema Be{li}evim rije~ima, ovim projektom obuhva}ena je ob-nova 192 stambene jedinice, {to }e svakako doprinijeti rje{avanjuproblema interno raseljenih osoba, ali i gospodarskom razvitkuMostara i regije jer su na projektu obnove anga`irane gra|evinsketvrtke iz Hercegovine.

Grad Mostar 11 godina pokrovitelj je jedine natjecateljske likovne izlo`be s nov~anim nagradama

Drawing Annals “Grand Prix Mostar 2008”


The 11th exhibition Drawing Annals “Grand Prix Mostar2008” that is traditionally part of “Mostar Summer

Festival” took place last month in the Culture Center of

Mostar.

The exhibition was opened by the Mayor of Mostar Ljubo Be{li}.The drawing annals “Grand Prix Mostar”, the traditional and an-

nual happening in the organization of ULUBIH, is the only paintingcontest in BiH at which the authors of the best pieces are awardedfinancially, and the sponsor of the awards has been the City ofMostar since the establishment of the happening 11 years ago.

This year’s Grand Prix Award worth about 1.200 BAM was pre-sented by expert judges to the painter Radoslav Tadi}, whosedrawing “In the garden” was proclaimed the best among the 41exposed pieces. The first prize of 800 BAM was awarded to thepainter Andrijana Mlinarevi}-Cvetkovi} for the drawing «The Good-intentioned Dragon»; the second award of 600 BAM went to thedrawing ”No title” by Fuad Top~agi}, while the third award of400 BAM was given to Edin Dervi{evi} for his drawing “Hora”.

Izlo`bu je otvorio gradona~elnik Mostara Ljubo Be{li}. Analecrteà “Grand prix Mostar”, tradicionalna godi{nja manifestacija

u organizaciji ULUBIH-a, jedina je likovna izlo`ba u BiH natjecate -lj skoga karaktera na kojoj autori najboljih radova budu nag ra |e ninov~anim nagradama, a pokrovitelj nagrada je, od osnutka m ani-festacije prije 11 godina, Grad Mostar.

Ovogodi{nji Grand prix u iznosu od 1.200 KM, odlukom stru ~ n ogsuda, dodijeljen je slikaru Radoslavu Tadi}u ~iji je crte` “U vrtu” pro-g la{en najboljim od ukupno 41 izloènog crteà.

Prvu nagradu u iznosu od 800 KM osvojila je slikarica AndrijanaMlinarevi}-Cvetkovi} za crte` “Dobronamjerni zmaj, drugu na-gradu u iznosu od 600 KM za crte` ”Bez naziva” dobio je FuadTo p~agi}, dok je tre}u nagradu u iznosu od 400 KM osvojio EdinDervi{evi} za crte` “Hora”.

Ve} na prvi pogled, smje{ten iznad Fojnice, svojim van-

jskim izgledom djeluje kao ukras grada. Zato mnogi koji

do|u u posjetu samostanu kaù: „Znali su fratri izabrati na-

jljep{e mjesto.“ Samostan Duha Svetoga je ~uvar fojni~ke

povijesti i garancija njezine budu}nosti. Jer iz samostana

se diè molitva k Bogu za Fojnicu i sve njezine stanovnike,

da im ìvoti budu ispunjeni MIROM i DOBROM, kaù

doma}ini, ljubazni fratri.

@ivotna pri~a samostana, kao uostalom i brojne druge

pri~e o BiH kroz vrijeme, ispunjena je te{ko}ama, padovima

i usponima. Kroz bogatu muzejsku zbirku i knji`nicu susrest

}ete svjedo~anstva o znamenitim ljudima koji su ìvjeli i

radili ovdje.

Me|u najva`nijim su: Zvjezdovi}a zbirka sa Ahdnamom idarovanim pla{tem koji je turski sultan Mehmed Fatih po-

klonio fra An|elu Zvizdovi}u prilikom predaje Ahdname 1463. go-dine kojom su franjevci dobili pravo ispovijedanja svoje vjere, a o~emu smo pisali u pro{lom broju BiH CITY REVIEW-a. Tu je i Bur-jultija Skender-pa{e iz 1486. godine i Zvizdovi}a slika.

Mileti}a zbirka sadrì crkvenu odje}u zlatom vezenu, bi-skupsku odje}u i obu}u, krasno ura|enu, biskupske kriève, {ta-pove i posu|e za sve~ane slu`be Bo`je.

U Bosanskofranjeva~koj zbirci su Grbovnik iz 1340. godine,vjerojatno jedna od najstarijih knjiga u ovim na{im krajevima sgrbovima „balkanskih zemalja“ i pojedinih poznatijih obitelji, Mu-hamedov list, dokument o slobodi (sli~no Ahdnami), starinskazvona, svjetiljke, tintarnice, odlikovanja, pe~ati, prsteni, krièvi,{tapovi (biskupski), dukati, satovi, lije~ni~ki pribor.

Velika je i crkvena zbirka sa izuzetnim radovima doma}ih maj-stora („fojni~ka {kola“) od srebra i zlata. Tu su i zbirke iskopina,oru`ja, narodnog veza i odijela, prirodoslovna zbirka.

At first sight, situated over Fojnica, it looks just like an or-

nament of the town. And so many that come to visit the

monastery say: „The monks really chose the most beautiful

place there is. “The monastery of the Holy Spirit is the

guardian of Fojnica’s history and the guarantee of its future.

That is because, as our hosts, the kind monks say- the prayers

for Fojnica and all its citizens, and for their lives to be full of

PEACE and GOOD, rise from the convent up to the sky.

The story of the monastery, as many stories about BiH

through time, is characterized by ups and downs. Through

a rich museum and library collection you will encounter tes-

timonies about the life of important people that lived and

worked here.

Among the most significant ones are: Zvjezdovi}’s collection

with the Ahdname and the gifted cape that the TurkishSultan Mehmed Fatih gave to monk An|elo Zvizdovi} during thepromotion of the Ahdname in 1463 with which the Franciscansobtained the right to practice their religion, about which we wrotein the last issue of BiH CITY REVIEW.

Then there is also the Burjultija of Skender-pasha from 1486and the Zvizdovi} painting.

The Mileti}a collection consists of church clothing embroideredin gold, beautifully made archbishop clothing and shoes, archbishopcrosses, sticks and boals for ceremonial God’s services.

In the Bosnian Franciscan collection you will find the Gr-bovnik from 1340 probably one of the oldest books of this regionwith the emblems of the „Balkan countries“ and several signifi-cant families. This collection also includes Mohamed’s charter, adocument about freedom (similar to the Ahdname), antique bells,lamps, inkpots, recognitions, seals, rings, crosses, sticks, ducats,clocks, and medical equipment.

Posebna i vrlo vrijedna je numizmati~ka kolekcija sa drago-cjenim primjercima rimskog i gr~kog novca, bosanskog i dub -rova~kog novca, raznog slavenskog nov ca, ugarskog, mleta~kog,novca Habsburgovaca, pa do zbirke novca novijeg datuma.

U knji`nom fondu posebno vrijedne su inkunabule, njih tri-naest. Najstarija je: Nicolai de Lyra: Postillae in S. ScripturamNovi testamenti, iz 1481. godine. Me|u knjigama je veliki broj iz-nimno vrijednih, ali i vrlo zanimljivih djela, poput Svetog pisma naarapskom jeziku, rje~nik Alfabetum Tibetanum, koji je trebaoposluìti misionarima upu}enim u te azijske krajeve, ili djela fraMatije Divkovi}a pisana na bosan~ici.

Tu sudokumenti vezani za Fojnicu, dokumenti pisani bosan~icom,stvari iz osobnog ìvota pojedinih fratara, ono {to se usko odnosina samostan i crkvu, o {kolstvu, o turskim zakonima, o ùpamafojni~kog distrikta, ìvotopisi istaknutih Fojni~ana, ulomci iz raz-nih arhiva, hronike i pisma, dokumenti o knjièvnom i prosvjet-nom radu franjevaca i drugo.

Posebna skupina su turski dokumenti, njih oko 3.000, koji suveoma va`ni za prou~avanje perioda turske vladavine u Bosni iHercegovini. Tako|er je vrijedna i zasebna skupina od 156 doku-menata pisanih bosan~icom.

Fratri su ~uvali ne samo slu`bene dopise nego i druge nes lu` -bene ali va`ne spise. Takav je sadràj i fojni~kog samostanskogarhiva koji ~uva Fojni~ki ljetopis, Dnevnik fra Grge Marti}a, Prije-vod sultanskih fermana na latinski, koji je uradio pomo}nik au-strijskog konzula dr. Atanackovi} 1818. godine, Turski fermani,Slu`beni turski spisi registrirani u 10 svezaka, i mnogi neregistri-rani, samostanski ra~uni, ~ak iz 17. stolje}a, pisani bosan~icom,Zemlji{ne isprave te mnogi povijesni podaci pova|eni iz arhivePropagande iz Rima.

I nakon osam godina, koliko je trajala obnova muzeja i knji` -nice u franjeva~kom samostanu u Fojnici, vrijedni eksponati iknjige od prije nekoliko mjeseci dostupni su javnosti.

To zna~i upoznati se sa samostanom, da i vama postane pri-jatelj, kako kaù ljubazni fratri, „dodu{e star, ali dobar prijatelj!“Prijatelj ~ija misija traje gotovo sedam stolje}a.

A LIBRARY WITH 40.000 TITLES

In the book fund especially valuable are the 13 incunabula. Theoldest one is: Nicolai de Lyra: Postillae in S. Scripturam New tes-taments from 1481. There are several very valuable artifacts butalso some very peculiar ones, like the Holy script in Arabic, thedictionary Alfabetum Tibetanum that was supposed to be of usefor the missionaries sent to the Asian regions, or the work ofmonk Matija Divkovi} written in Bosnian Cyrillic.

A great number of books are of philoso phical and theologicalnature and were pri nted from the 16th to the 19th century, andthere are also books from the historical, ge ographical, medical,and natural sciences.

The works of older Bosnian writers (Divkovi}, Margiti}, Posi -lovi}, An~i}) written in Bosnian Cyrillic are valuable and importantfor the analysis of domestic literature.

Some of the valuable periodicals to be found in the collectionare the Christian paper, Vienac, Obzor, the Illyrian Danica, the Yu-goslavenian paper, Neven, the Popular newspaper...

The monastery’s archive is very significant from the point ofview of the Franciscan and general history, especially for Bosniaand Herzegovina. These are documents about Fojnica, docu-ments written in Bosnian Cyrillic, details from the personal livesof some monks, writings related to the monastery and the church,documents about the educational system, Turkish laws, aboutthe municipalities of the Fojnica area, the biographies of renow -ned citizens of Fojnica, parts of various archives, chronicles andletters, documents about the literary and educational work ofFranciscans etc.

A special part of the collection is dedicated to Turkish docu-

ments, around 3.000 of them that are very important for study-ing the Ottoman period in BiH. Also valuable is the separate groupof 156 documents written in Bosnian Cyrillic.

The monks preserved not only the official correspondence butalso other unofficial but important writings. Such is also the con-tent of Fojnica’s monastery archive that includes the Fojnicachronicles, the Diary of monk Grgo Marti}, the Translation of theSultan Charter to Latin done by the assistant to the Austrian Con-sul Dr. Atanackovi} in 1818, Turkish charters, official Turkish writ-ings in 10 volumes along with many of them unregistered;monastery bills from the 17th century written in Bosnian Cyrillic,state documents and many historical data extracted from thearchive of Propaganda in Rome.

And now, after eight years, which is how long the reconstructionof the museum and library of the Franciscan monastery in Foj nicalasted, valuable exhibits and books are available for the publicsince a few months back.

So, get acquainted with the monastery and make it your friend.As the kind monks say, „old, but good friend!“ …A friend whosemission has lasted for over seven centuries.

SAMOSTAN JO[ „ZA KRALJEVA BOSANSKIH”

Osnivanje samostana u Fojnici te{ko je ta~no odrediti,

ali se zasigurno moè staviti u prvu polovicu XIV stolje}a.

S rudarima iz Njema~ke, Italije, prostora Hrvatske i drugih

krajeva dolaze i njihovi du{obri`nici da im budu na usluzi.

Dubrova~ke naseobine u Fojnici spominju se ve} 1312. i

1313., a poimeni~no se spominje ku}a vlastelina Pavla Ni-

kole de Menija u Ostru`nici 1349. godine. U turskim spi-

sima spominje se da su u Fojnici bili crkva i samostan jo{

„za kraljeva bosanskih“. Sve to upu}uje da je samostan

mogao biti osnovan u prvoj polovici XIV stolje}a.

Uz Kraljevu Sutjesku i Kre{evo, ovaj samostan je bio tre}i

oslonac opstanka i ìvota franjeva~ke provincije Bosne Sre-

brene, ali i Crkve u Bosni i Hercegovini. Fratri ovih samo-

stana vodili su pastoralnu brigu za cijeli katoli~ki puk.

Prvi poloàj samostana bio je na Pazarnicama, na zara-

vni iznad dana{njeg muslimanskog groblja. I tu su fratri

proveli nekih 150 godina. Prema ljetopisima fra An|eo Zviz-

dovi} umro je 1498. godine u tom samostanu. No, zbog

ometanja ìvota u samostanu ~estim dolascima nezvanih

gostiju i vojske, fratri se sklanjaju pod brdo Kri` i tu grade

samostan, gdje stoji i ìvi i danas. Samostan je bio malen,

u gustoj {umi brijestova, i gotovo se nije vidio s puta.

Vremenom je rastao, {irio se i danas plijeni svojim iz-

gledom i uljep{ava Fojnicu.

A MONASTERY FROM THE TIMES „OF BOSNIAN KINGS”

It is difficult to know the exact time of the foundation of

the monastery in Fojnica but it can surely be placed in the

first half of the 14th century. The miners from Germany,

Italy, Croatia and other regions that came to Fojnica

brought their guardians with them. The Dubrovnik neigh-

borhoods in Fojnica are mentioned as early as in 1312 and

1313, and also mentioned by its name was the house of the

nobleman Pavle Nikola de Meni in Ostru`nica in 1349. In

the Turkish scripts it can be read that there were a church

and monastery in Fojnica in the times «of Bosnian kings».

So, all this points to the fact that the monastery could have

been founded in the first half of the 14th century.

Together with Kraljeva Sutjeska and Kre{evo this

monastery was the third pillar of survival and life of the

Franciscan province of Silver Bosnia, but also of the Church

in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The monks of these monaster-

ies took pastoral care of all the Catholic population.

The first site of the monastery was on Pazarnice, on the

lowlands above today’s Muslim cemetery. The monks

spent 150 years there. According to the annals of monk

An|eo Zvizdovi}, he died in 1498 in that monastery. But

because the often visits of uninvited guests and the army

disturbed monastery life, the monks moved under the Kri`

hill and built a monastery there, where it is located today.

The monastery was small, positioned among fronded elms

and thus almost invisible from the road. With time it ex-

panded and today its appearance astonishes visitors and

lends its beauty to Fojnica.

The town Tuzla, formerly the capital of heavy and polluting

industry and today one of the most popular tourist destina-

tions in this part of Europe, is situated in the southeastern

part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

covered this part of Europe, along with the sinking ground as theconsequence of the use of salt water for industrial purposes andthe production of salt, and finally the destruction of beautifulbuildings in particular those of the Austro-Hungarian period,which in turn was induced by the sinking of ground due to saltwater drawing, are all factors that had put Tuzla in the categoryof BiH cities that are left without the buildings as witnesses offormer life in this area.

It was not easy to turn all these problems, negative occur-rences and the unfortunate destiny of this town into somethingof the totally opposite. But, in the end Tuzla became a city that,from year to year, receives tourism prizes as the most populartourist destination in this part of Europe. It is a town devoted toreviving the past and life from the period of the Neolithic to this day.

danas jedno od najpopularnijih turisti~kih destinacija u

ovom dijelu Evrope.

Vi{estoljetno crpljenje slane vode, koja je u utrobi ovoga gradaostavila svjedo~anstvo nekada{njeg Panonskog mora {to je

pokrivalo ovaj dio Evrope, problem tonjenja kao posljedicakori{tenja slane vode za industrijske kapacitete, ali i za proizvo-dnju jestive soli, i naposljetku ru{enje prelijepih gra|evinskih ob-jekata, posebno iz austrougarskog perioda, koje je, opet, izazvaloslijeganje tla zbog crpljenja slanice, donedavno su Tuzlu svrsta-vali u red bosanskohercegova~kih gradova koji su ostali bezgra|evina odnosno svjedoka pro{losti i nekada{njeg ìvota naovom podru~ju.

Nije bilo lako sve te probleme, negativnosti i nesre}e ovogagrada pretvoriti u ne{to {to mu sada daje sasvim drugu sliku.Tuzla je tako postala grad koji iz godine u godinu osvaja turis ti~kenagrade kao najpopularnija turisti~ka destinacija u ovom dijeluEvrope, grad koji se toliko posvetio oìvljavanju pro{losti i ìvotasve od doba neolita pa do danas.

ZA[TO DO]I U TUZLU?

Kratak odgovor bi glasio: zbog mnogo toga. Na mjestu gdje jenekada bio najru`niji dio grada i svojevrsna deponija sme}a na-pravljena su dva jedina slana jezera u ovom dijelu Evrope. WHY COME TO TUZLA?

The short answer would be: for a bunch of reasons. The placewhere the ugliest part of town and a garbage depot were previ-ously located is now home to the only two salt lakes in this partof Europe. The Panonsko Lakes area– which is the name of thesetwo beautiful blue eyes in the center of town – is proof that thePanonsko Sea was located here in previous times.

The seaside atmosphere accompanied by beautifully arrangedbeaches, cafés, and a fitness center are just a part of the con-tents that will make your stay at the Panonsko Lakes utterly re-laxing and an unforgettable experience.

Near the lakes you will find the only tourist square in Bosniaand Herzegovina, called Salt square. A drill hole found here con-firms the facts found in literature that speak about how the peo-ple here have lived from salt since ancient times.

The Museum of Salt and the Museum of Eastern Bosnia, a bi-ological collection, beautiful mosques, a Franciscan monasteryand the Church of Saint Apostils Peter and Paul, along with theOrthodox temple with its castle are just some of the buildings inthis part of BiH worth visiting.

The old part of town, Tuzla’s center, is almost completely re-newed. A long pedestrian zone, many outdoor summer cafés forrefreshment, a traditional faucet, a restaurant with Bosnian spe-cialties, and soon the largest town square in the center of townwith the popular building Baroque, and the big fountain within it,are all reasons to pay a visit to Tuzla.

URE\ENJE ARHEOLO[KOG LOKALITETA KICELJ

Na arheolo{kom lokalitetu Kicelj Op}ina Tuzla namjerava na-praviti vidikovac i arheolo{ki park u kojem }e biti rekonstruiranejedna ili vi{e zemunica. Pro{le godine na ovom lokalitetu prona -|ena je jedna zemunica, a pro{log mjeseca je arheolo{ki timMuzeja isto~ne Bosne, uz pomo} kustosice Zemaljskog muzejaBiH mr. Zilke Kujundì}-Vejzagi}, otkrio dvije staroslavenskepe}i za taljenje èljezne rude iz 8/9. stolje}a.

Radi se o kompleksu jednog staroslavenskog doma}instva,koje je uz prostorije za stanovanje imalo i radionice koje suopsluìvale doma}instvo. Slaveni su, ina~e,u ove krajeve do{li s poz navanjem kova~-kog zanata.

Jedna pe} je dosta dobro o~uvana, iuz nju je na|eno dosta otpada od taljenjaèljezne rude, kao i ostaci kre~njaka kojije kori{ten za proizvodnju. Druga pe} jene{to manja i vjerovatno je bila kova~ka,jer su uz nju na|eni proizvodi od èljeza -igla i kresivo. Na ostacima pe}i se vidi dasu dugi niz godina bili izloèni jako viso-kim temperaturama, oko 1000 0C, kolikoje potrebno za obradu èljeza.

ARRANGEMENT OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA KICELJ

Municipality Tuzla plans to build an observatory and an ar-chaeological park in which one or more dwellings will be re-constructed. Last year one dwelling was found here, and lastmonth an archaeological team from the Museum of EasternBosnia with the help of the custodian from the National Mu-seum of BiH Zilka Kujundì} – Vejzagi}, found two old Slavicstoves for the smelting of iron ore from the 8th /9th century.

It is an old Slavic household that, besides the rooms for liv-ing, also included workshops in the service of the household.The Slavs came to these areas as educated blacksmiths.

One of the stoves has been preserved well, and beside it alot of remains from the smelting of iron ore have been found aswell as remains of limestone that was used for production. Theother stove is a bit smaller and it was most probably a black-smith stove because products made of iron were found near it –needles and tim ber. The remains of the stoves show they hadbeen exposed to very high temperatures for many years, ap-proximately to around 1000 0C, which is the temperature re-quired for handling iron.

Uùpi Grada~ac, spomenutoj 1302. godine, nalazio se gradGradac o kome postoji obavijest iz 1465. godine. Od 1512.

godine u vlasti je Turaka. Nakon Karlova~kog mira (1699)Grada~ac, kojem je tada bila namijenjena odbrana turskih gra-nica na Savi, dobiva na svom strate{kom zna~aju.

Godine 1701. Grada~ac postaje palanka, a od 1710. sjedi{tekapetanije. Poslije toga varo{ica se brzo razvijala, pa je polo-vinom XIX stolje}a imala dva hana, dvije medrese, ~etiri dà -mije, nekoliko mekteba i oko 40 trgova~kih i zanatskih radnji.

Najve}a zasluga za takav prosperitet pripada grada~a~kimnasljednim kapetanima Grada{~evi}ima, Osman-kapetanu iMurat-kapetanu.

Izgradnja postoje}eg tvr|avskog kompleksa u Grada~cupo~ela je 1765. a dovr{ena do 1821. godine. Masivno gra|ena~etverokatna Sahat-kula, kvadratne osnove, visoka 22 metra,najmla|i je objekt te vrste u BiH. Podigao ju je 1824. godine Hu-sein-kapetan Grada{~evi}. Iz tog perioda poti~e i dàmija Hu-sejnija, a najstarija sa~uvana gra|evina je Svira~ka dàmija,obnovljena 1875. godine.

U Grada~cu je i jedna od najstarijih biblioteka u BiH, osno-vana 1839. godine. Umjetni~ka i muzejska zbirka ove biblio-teke svjedo~i o burnoj historiji Grada~ca.

Posebno mjesto u bosanskoj historiji pripada predvodnikuvojske bosanskih feudalaca u borbi protiv turske uprave 1830.godine, Husein-kapetanu (1802-1834), poznatom kao „Zmajod Bosne“.

U ~uvenom razgovoru s turskim beglerbegom, kada mu jeovaj rekao: „Nema vi{e Bosne, a ne}e biti ni Bo{njaka, Hu-seine... Gine{ za dràvu koja nikad nije ni postojala – niti }e“,Husein-kapetan Grada{~evi} mu je odgovorio: „Ima Bosne,

beglerbeè, i Bo{njaka u njoj! Bili su prije vas i ako Bog

da bit }e i poslije vas!!!“

Podru~je Grada~ca je poznati vo}arski kraj. Od 1969. godineu njemu se odràva turisti~ko-privredna manifestacija „Me|u -narodni sajam {ljive“.

Na izvori{tima termalnih voda, kojima obiluje podru~jeGrada~ca, izgra|en je banjsko-lje~ili{ni kompleks „Ilidà“.

Vje{ta~ka jezera Hazna i Vidara pruàju idealne uvjete zaturizam.

In the Grada~ac county mentioned in 1302, there was the townGradac about which there is an announcement from 1465. Since

1512 it was ruled by the Turks. After the Karlovac peace treaty(1699) Grada~ac, which was intended for the defense of Ottomanborders on the river Sava, gets on its strategic significance.

In 1701 Grada~ac becomes a small town, and since 1710 it isthe seat of the captaincy. After that the small town started de-veloping fast and in the middle of the 19th century it had two pub-lic bathrooms, two secondary Islamic schools, four mosques,several primary Islamic schools and around 40 merchant andhandcraft stores. The greatest merit for that prosperity belongsto Grada~ac’s captains from the Grada{~evi} family, Osman –captain and Murat - captain.

The construction of the existing fort compound in Grada~acstarted in 1765 and it was finished by 1821. The colossal 22meter-high four-floor squared based clock-tower is the youngestfacility of its kind in BiH. It was erected by Husein- captainGrada{~evi} in 1824. The mosque Husejnija also belongs to thatperiod and the oldest conserved facility is the Svira~ mosque, re-newed in 1875.

One of the oldest libraries was established in Grada~ac in1839. The artistic and museological collection of this library tes-tifies about the boisterous history of Grada~ac.

A special place in Bosnian history belongs to the leader of themilitary of Bosnian feudalists in the battle against the OttomanEmpire in 1830, Husein-captain (1802 - 1834), known as “Dragonvon Bosnia”.

In the famous conversation with the Ottoman bey, when thisone told him: “There is no Bosnia anymore and there will be noBosnians either, Husein… You are dying for a state that never ex-isted – nor will it”, Husein – captain Grada{~evi} answered:“Bosnia does exist, bey, and so do the Bosnians in it! They

were here before you and, if it is God’s will, they will be here

after you as well!!!”

The area of Grada~ac is a known fruit area. Since 1969 thetourism business event “International Plum Fair” is being held there.

The spa-health complex “Ilid`a” has been built on the springsof thermal water all around the area of Grada~ac. The artificiallakes Hazna and Vidara offer ideal conditions for tourism.

Toplifikacija Gra~anice, s razlogom nazvana projektom stolje}a,ulazi u zavr{nicu. Nakon {to su okon~ani radovi na izgradnji

objekta kotlovnice i poloène prve stotine metara toplovoda, ujulu su iz Austrije dopremljeni i prvi dijelovi kotlova.

Austrijska firma „Kohlbach“ dopremila je prve elemente kotlovai uz pomo} bh. firme „Metal-montaà“ iz Tuzle zapo~ela radovena montaì, koji }e prema rije~ima glavnog montaèra HubertaWalzla biti zavr{eni po~etkom augusta.

- Radi se i na postavljanju toplovoda u rejonu Industrijskezone, a svi radovi teku predvi|enom dinamikom - kaè HasanMostarli}, direktor firme „Eko-toplane“ DD Gra~anica.

To zna~i da }e ve} ove zime poslovni objekti u Industrijskojzoni dobiti grijanje preko Gradske toplane. Ako sve bude teklokako je planirano, grijanje iz Gradske toplane dobit }e i naselja uju`nom dijelu grada.

The heating system in Gra~anica, with reason called “projectof the century”, enters its finals. After the completion of works

on the construction of the boiler room and the installation of thefirst hundred of cables, the first parts of boilers were deliveredfrom Austria in July.

The Austrian company “Kohlbach” delivered the first boilerparts, and with the help of the BiH company “Metal montage”from Tuzla it has started installation works that will, according tothe words of the chief montage worker Hubert Walzl, be finishedby the beginning of August.

- The works on setting heating cables are also being per-formed in the region of the Industrial zone and everything is goingaccording to schedule– says Hasan Mostarli}, director of the firm“Eco - heating” from Gra~anica.

And so, this winter the business objects in the Industrial zonewill receive heating services from the City Heating plant. If every-thing goes as planned the City Heating plant will also be heatingthe areas in the south of town.

Pri kraju svog drugog mandata na funkciji na~elnika op}ine

Grada~ac Ferhat Mustafi} isti~e da su u proteklih osam go-

dina postignuti izuzetno dobri rezultati. Zasa|eni su milijuni

novih sadnica vo}a, izgra|eno je sedam osnovnih i dvije sre-

dnje {kole, ambulante obiteljske medicine, oko 7.000 u ratu

poru{enih ku}a je obnovljeno, a sve mjesne zajednice do-

bile su asfalt, uli~nu rasvjetu, telefonsku liniju. Grada ~a~ ko

gospodarstvo, posebice privatno poduzetni{tvo, biljeì stalni

uspon.

BiH CITY REVIEW: Op}ina Grada~ac se u posljednje vrijeme

uzima kao primjer jedne uspje{ne lokalne zajednice koja

biljeì stalni razvoj?

MUSTAFI]: Op}ina Grada~ac se prostire na oko 220 kvadratnihkilometara gdje u 36 mjesnih zajednica ivi oko 47.000 stanovnika,me|u kojima i oko 2.000 izbjeglica. Sam grad Grada~ac ima oko15.000 stanovnika. Ve}inu stanovni{tva op}ine ~ini ruralno sta-novni{tvo. Poku{ali smo, a u tome i uspjeli, da uvjete ivota u seo-skim sredinama pribliìmo onim gradskim. Tu prvenstveno mislimna struju, vodu, telefone, {kolu, ambulante porodi~ne medicine,vjerske objekte, asfaltne putove, ali i stvaranje uvjeta za izgra-dnju privrednih objekata. Samim tim ljudi vi{e nemaju èlju a nipotrebu hrliti u grad i tamo graditi ku}e. Posljednjih godina bilje -ìmo ve}i standard seoskog stanovni{tva u odnosu na gradsko.

MUSTAFI]: Prihodi gra|ana u Grada~cu ovise o prihodima u po-ljoprivredi. Samo u posljednjih osam godina, od kada vodim ovuop}inu, posa|eno je oko 3,5 miliona stabala vo}a, uglavnom {ljivai jabuka. BiH CITY REVIEW: The Grada~ac municipality is in recent

time being put forward as a successful example of a local

community that records constant development?

MUSTAFI]: Municipality Grada~ac is located on an area of 220square kilometers, on which about 47,000 residents of which2,000 refugees, live in 36 local communities. The City of Grada ~achas about 15,000 residents. Much of the population in the mu-nicipality is comprised of rural population. We tried and ultimatelysucceeded in making the conditions of life in rural communitiesclose to urban living conditions. I primarily think of electricity,water, telephones, schools, family health care institutions, reli-gious objects, asphalted roads but also of creating conditions forthe construction of commercial property. Given such conditionspeople no longer wish to go to the city and build houses there. Inrecent years we have recorded a higher percentage of rural pop-ulation vs. urban.

BiH CITY REVIEW: Since ancient times Grada~ac is known

as an orchards’ town. The last war, except for its damage to

people and objects, left its aftermaths on the orchards as

well. What has been done so far on the reconstruction of

orchards?

MUSTAFI]: The incomes of the citizens in Grada~ac depend onthe incomes in agriculture. Just in the last eight years, since I

uz kantonalne i federalne subvencije, bilo zasa|eno novih 1,5 milionsadnica vo}a. Tako bi ve} krajem ove i po~etkom idu}e godinebroj stabala vo}a u op}ini Grada~ac narastao na preko pet miliona.Ovi vo}njaci donosit }e izme|u 200 i 300 miliona KM godi{njih pri-hoda. Sve vi{e se uzgaja i povr}e, tako da na podru~ju op}ineimamo oko 800 plastenika ve}ih od 300 kvadratnih metara, aprije {est godina postojalo ih je svega 50-ak. Otvaraju se i farmekrava muzara, farme za proizvodnju i uzgoj pili}a. Izdvojio bih i iz-gradnju protivgradnog sistema, koji je uvezan sa susjednim op}i -nama u Republici Srpskoj i koji za sada besprijekorno funkcionira.Uspjeli smo regulirati i 70-ak kilometara rije~nih tokova, pa su{tete od poplava zanemarive. Ako se ima u vidu da je preko 80posto poljoprivrednih povr{ina u op}ini Grada~ac obra|eno, ondapoljoprivredna proizvodnja ima svijetlu budu}nost.

MUSTAFI]: Grada~ac danas ima vi{e zaposlenih nego prije ratai taj broj se kre}e negdje oko 9.000. Imam obi~aj re}i da u Gra -da~cu nema nezaposlenih, ali da ih ima na birou za zapo{ljavanje.Potreba za odre|enim stru~nim profilima je svakodnevna. Gra da~ -cu nedostaju gra|evinski inènjeri, arhitekti, ma{inski i elektro inè -njeri, farmaceuti, lije~nici. Istina da trenutno imamo vi{ka onih sfakultetom kriminologije i defektologije, a ne{to je malo neza-poslenih pravnika. Nedostaju nam diplomirani ekonomisti. Politi-kom stipendiranja deficitarnih struka taj problem u idu}emperiodu }e se prevazi}i. U proteklih osam godina nastojao samstvoriti {to povoljnije uvjete za razvoj privrede, a posebice za po-kretanje privatnog poduzetni{tva, i mislim da smo tu na~iniliogromne iskorake u odnosu na druge, nama sli~ne sredine.

Kakvo je stanje sada?

MUSTAFI]: Grada~ac godi{nje ima 150.000 posjetilaca, me|ukojima oko 16.000 u~enika. To su posjetioci, ali nisu turisti. Svioni dolaze posjetiti kulturno-historijske spomenike, Sajam {ljive iligrada~a~ka jezera. Turizam je privredna grana koja je profitabilna,ali uz odre|ene preduvjete. Nama nedostaje kongresna dvoranai dva do tri hotela. Na Banji Ilidì se zavr{ava izgradnja zatvo renihbazena, a idu}e godine imamo projekte za otvoreni olimpijskibazen. Da bi turizam bio grana koja privre|uje Grada~cu, mo-ramo imati izgra|ene i sportske terene. U izgradnji je nogometnistadion s atletskom stazom gdje se ulaè oko 4 miliona maraka.Neophodna je, uz postoje}u, nova sportska dvorana, a tako|er iteniska igrali{ta. U planu je izgradnja i hipodroma, a kada se ovosve izgradi mo}i }emo ubirati plodove od turizma.

MUSTAFI]: U proteklih osam godina realizirali smo preko tri sto-tine razli~itih projekata iz raznih oblasti, od zapo{ljavanja, ob-nove, izgradnje infrastrukture, obrazovanja, turizma, kulture,sporta… Grada~ac i mnoge mjesne zajednice dobili su pitku vodu.Obnovili smo kulu, napravili sedam {kola, a mnoge ve}e op}ine,

have been in charge of this municipality, about 3.5 million fruittrees have been planted, mainly apple and plum. There is stillgreat interest and now we have around 1,500 new demands of cit-izens for raising orchards. This, in addition to cantonal and fed-eral subsidies, will enable 1.5 million of new seedlings of fruit tobe planted. So, by the end of this and the beginning of next yearthe number of fruit trees in the municipality of Grada~ac will riseto over five million. These orchards will bring between 200 and300 million BAM of annual revenue. Vegetables are also beinggrown more and more, so that in the area of the municipality wehave about 800 structures over 300 square meters large, while sixyears ago there were only around 50 of them. Farms for dairycows are also being opened as well as farms for the productionand cultivation of chicken. I would also put an accent on the con-struction of an anti-urbanization system which is connected tothe neighboring municipalities in the Republic of Srpska and is fornow working perfectly well. We have also managed to regulatearound 70 kilometers of river flows so that damages from floodsare negligible. If you bear in mind that over 80 percent of agri-cultural areas in the municipality of Grada~ac is cultivated then it is clear that a bright future lies ahead for agricultural production.

BiH CITY REVIEW: Municipality Grada~ac also records suc-

cess in the field of economy. There is a growing number of

new companies that are opening new jobs.

MUSTAFI]: Grada~ac today has more employed people than be-fore the war and that number is in the vicinity of 9,000. I have ahabit of saying that there are no unemployed people in Grada~ac,only those waiting at the employment office. There is a constantneed for certain professions. Grada~ac is lacking structural en-gineers, architects, machine and electrical engineers, pharma-cists, doctors. Truth is, we currently have a surplus of CrimeUniversity graduates and those from the University for Disinfec-tion, and there are also a few unemployed lawyers. We also havea lack of graduated economists. But, through giving out scholar-ships to the lacking professions, this issue will be overcome in thefuture. In the past eight years I have tried to create more favorableconditions for the development of the economy, in particular forthe establishment of private enterprises, and I think we havemade a huge step ahead compared to other environments simi-lar to ours.

BiH CITY REVIEW: Grada~ac was formerly known for tourism.

What is the situation now?

MUSTAFI]: Grada~ac yearly receives 150,000 visitors includingabout 16,000 students. But, these are merely visitors and nottourists. They all come to visit our cultural and historical monuments,the Fair of plums or the lakes in Grada~ac. Tourism is a pro fitablebranch of the economy that requires certain preconditions. Weare missing a congress hall and two to three hotels. The construc -tion of indoor swimming pools in Spa Ilidà is in its final phase andfor next year an outdoor Olympic pool is on the way. In order fortourism to be a branch that contributes to the development ofGrada~ac, we must have built sport fields. A football stadium with anathletic race track is undergoing construction as well as tennis

Te{ko je nabrojati sve te projekte, a kamoligovoriti o svakom od njih. Izdvojio bih jedan koji zagovaramopunih sedam godina. To je izgradnja vodovodne mreè duìne 220kilometara, najve}e u BiH. Ve} smo potpisali sporazum s austrij-skim vlastima za kreditiranje 17 miliona maraka, od kojih }e 4miliona biti utro{eno za sekundarnu mreù a 12 miliona za iz-vori{te u Domaì}u. Ono {to nismo uradili, ali smo na tome radili,je izgradnja gradskog trga i gradske garaè. Gradska garaà je ne-ophodna jer Grada~ac ima oko 15.000 registriranih automobila, ato je najve}i broj automobila po broju stanovnika u BiH.

BiH CITY REVIEW: You have been in charge of Municipality

Grada~ac for two mandates. What you would say has been

your greatest success, and what should be done in the fol-

lowing period?

MUSTAFI]: In the past eight years we have realized over threehundred of various projects in various fields ranging from em-ployment, reconstruction, infrastructure construction, education,to tourism, culture, sports… Both Grada~ac and many local com-munities have received drinking water. We have rebuilt the tower,erected seven schools as opposite to many bigger municipalitiessuch as Tuzla, which has constructed only one school in 30 years.Major steps have been taken in the field of health primarily by theopening of family medicine health care institutions. It is difficultto list all undertaken projects and even more difficult to talk abouteach of them. However, I would emphasize one of them which wehave been advocating for seven years. It is the construction of awater supply network in the length of 220 kilometers, the great-est one in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We have already signed anagreement with Austrian banking authorities for a loan of 17 mil-lion BAM, of which 4 million will be spent for the secondary net-work and 12 million for the source of Domaì}. What we have notdone, but have worked on, is to build a city square and a citygarage. A city garage is necessary because Grada~ac has about15,000 registered cars which is the biggest number of cars pernumber of citizens in the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

- Ovi projekti doprinose pozitivnom imidù Biha}a, koji

svakim danom postaje sve vi{e zanimljiv kako doma}im tako

i stranim investitorima. Sve to ne bi bilo mogu}e da Biha}

naro~ito posljednjih godina nije u pravom smislu rije~i po-

stao otvoreni grad. Dokazuju to brojne posjete doma}ih i ino-

zemnih zvani~nika te dugogodi{nja prijateljstva s gra|anima

nekoliko evropskih gradova - kaè na~elnik Lipova~a, koji

smatra razvojni koncept Biha}a prioritetom Op}ine.

Ure|enjem uè jezgre grada te poplo~avanjem Bosanske uliceodi sta je stvorena nova slika urbanog centra Biha}a. Projekt je

za v r {en polovinom ove godine. U 2007. za njegovu realizaciju utro -{eno je 800.000 KM, a u ovoj godini za zavr{etak je investirano 1,8miliona KM. Uz ovaj kapitalni projekt izvr{ena je i obnova dotraja-lih i o{te}enih fasada stambenih zgrada u gradskom centru, {to jedoprinijelo sveukupnom ljep{em izgledu Biha}a. Tako je grad dobioi centralni trg, kojeg u svojoj dosada{njoj historiji nije imao i koji jepostao mjesto svakodnevnog okupljanja i razli~itih kulturnih i sport-skih de{avanja.

Ure|enje Gradske otoke pitanje je kojim su se op}inske vlastiba vile proteklih godina. îni se da }e Gradska otoka u ovoj godininapokon doìvjeti preobraàj. Ovim projektom planira se udahnutiìvot sadràjem primjerenim ovom dijelu Biha}a a da se ne naru{iprirodna osobnost Gradske otoke. Sve dosada{nje aktivnosti kojesu se odvijale na Gradskoj otoci, poput sajmova, izlo`bi, unaprije-dit }e se gradnjom prikladnog kompleksa, kojem }e voditi pje{a~kimost i prilaz s trga. The planned budget for this year amounting to about 44 mil-lion BAM has assured significant resources for the completion ofcapital investments from the year 2007, and new projects are onthe horizon.

-These projects contribute to the positive image of Biha}

that is becoming more and more interesting to both do-

mestic and foreign investors. Nothing would have been pos-

sible had Biha} not, especially in the last few years, truly

opened up. And a corroboration of that are frequent visits of

domestic and foreign representatives and long lasting

friendships with citizens from several European cities –

says County Head Lipova~a, who considers the development

of Biha} to be the priority of the borough.

The arrangement of the city center and the causewaying of theBosnian Street have created a new image for the urban cen-

ter of Biha}. The project was finished in the middle of this year.In 2007 800.000 BAM were spent for the realization of the proj-ect, and this year 1,8 million BAM has been invested for its com-pletion. This capital project comprising the renewal of old anddamaged facades of apartment buildings in the center of townhave contributed to a nicer appearance of Biha}, overall.

And so for the first time in history Biha} got a central square,which has become a place for every-day gatherings and variouscultural and sport events.

The arrangement of the City Island is an issue town authoritieshave been dealing with for years. It seems that the Island will thisyear finally be subject to alterations. This project will provide thecity with livelihood and content appropriate for this part of Biha},at the same time, not damaging the natural character of the CityIsland. All those activities that were previously held on the City Is-land, such as fairs and exhibitions, will be enhanced by the con-struction of a suitable complex which a pedestrian bridge willlead to. It will be an attraction and a one-of-a-kind cult space, thejunction of Biha}’s past, present and future.

NEW PROJECTS FOR A MORE BEAUTIFUL BIHA]

Prekounjem. Za ovu investiciju planiran je iznos od 1,24 milionaKM. Radovi bi trebali biti zavr{eni do septembra.

Uz ovaj projekt ide i izgradnja pasarele, odnosno pje{a~ke ko-munikacije na Bedemu prema naselju Ozimice I. Za gra|ane }e tozna~iti brè, jednostavnije i sigurnije kretanje izme|u centra gradai Ozimica. Za ovaj projekt je u ovogodi{njem budètu planirano350.000 KM. Most }e biti izgra|en u duìni od 11,8 metara, a{irok ~etiri, kao i pothodnik ~ija }e ukupna duìna iznositi 30 me-tara. Radovi bi trebali biti zavr{eni u roku od 60 dana.

Realizacijom ova dva projekta posti}i }e se i cilj op}inskih organauprave, predvo|enih na~elnikom Hamdijom Lipova~om, a to je iz-gradnja kvalitetnog pje{a~kog koridora, koji }e jedno od najbrojnijihnaselja Ozimice I povezati s centrom grada, te preko Gradske otokei novog pje{a~kog mosta sa Prekounjem. Ako se uzme u obzir da jeve}ina srednjih {kola u Biha}u smje{tena upravo u Prekounju, ovim}e projektima veliki broj u~enika sigurnije i brè stizati do {kole.

Jedan od zna~ajnih projekata je i obilaznica „Ceravci“, ~ijom }ese izgradnjom u duìni od 1.300 metara rasteretiti saobra}aj iomogu}iti razvoj kvalitetnih saobra}ajnica. Ve} je ura|en glavni pro-jekt, koji }e s projektom semaforizacije biti finansiran kreditnimsredstvima. Za oba projekta bit }e potrebno blizu ~etiri miliona KM.

Kod obilaznice „Ceravci“, prema urbanisti~kom planu Op}ine,pre dvi|ena je gradnja nove zgrade Katoli~kog {kolskog centra -[kole za Evropu. Potvrda je to da je Biha} grad svih naroda i kon-fesija u BiH.

The City of Biha} has adopted a project for the construction ofa 48-meter-long pedestrian bridge by which the City Island will beconnected to Prekounje. This investment requires 1,24 millionBAM to be set aside. Works should be finished by September.

This project also plans for the construction of a pedestrian linkbetween Bedem and the area of Ozimice I to take place. This willbring faster, simpler and safer movement between the center oftown and Ozimice for residents. The budget for this projectamounts to 350.000 BAM. The bridge will be 11,8 meters longand four meters high, while the subway will be a 30-meter-longone. The works should be done in 60 days.

When these two projects are completed, the municipality au-thorities led by Hamdija Lipova~a will have reached their goal, whichis the construction of a good pedestrian corridor connecting one ofthe most inhabited areas - Ozimice I with the center of town andacross the City Island, along with the new pedestrian bridge withPrekounje. If one considers the fact that the majority of high schoolsin Biha} are located in Prekounje, it is clear that this project willmake a great number of students arrive to schools more safely.

One of the more significant projects is also the 1,300-meter-long alternative route “Ceravci” which will alleviate traffic andenable the development of high-quality roads. The project has al-ready been drawn up along with the project of traffic lights, whichwill be financed from credit funds. For both of these projects nearfour million BAM are needed.

Since last month six po w er plants at the hydroele ctric powerplant Jab la nica have been restored and cost 31 million Swiss

francs in cre dit assets and 35 million BAM of cash of the Elec-tricity Company of BiH. The power units were built from 1954 to1958. The reconstruction has enhanced their power by 25% andprolonged the lifetime ofthe machinery for 30 moreyears. The integration ofthe most advanced tech-nology enables modernutilization management di-rectly at the scene as wellas that of dislocated man-agement centers.

„SHELL“ ANALYZING OIL FROM TUZLA

The galloping growth in the prices of oil have stimulated theSarajevo company „Energoinvest“ as the only pre-war official

oil researcher on the territory of BiH, to try to reactivate an old oilproject it worked on in cooperation with the Americans. Prof. Dr.Abdulah Ba{i}, Dean of the University of Minery, Construction andGeology of Tuzla claims that the first BiH oil barrels could be ex-tracted 15 years from now and even earlier if the local authori-ties follow their instinct and embark on a project that is a «dreamof foreign oil giants». “The oil crisis will last for a long time, andour capacities are already two and a half times greater than Croa-tia’s“, claims Dr. Ba{i}. This explains the interest of foreign com-panies that sent their researchers to examine the quality of BiHoil. Experts of the „Shell“ company from England and Canadahave taken samples of oil for examination, and they will be backin Tuzla with an elaborate analysis for researching oil potentialsof northeastern Bosnia.

BLAST FURNACE FUNCTIONING IN ZENICA AFTER 17 YEARS

Last month, after 17 years, Arcelor Mittal Zenica successfullysta r ted a blast furnace of 1.764 m3 capacity. The first quanti-

ties of liquid iron present a significant turning point for the inte-gral produ ction of iron. Arcelor Mittal is the world’s largest steelproducing co mpany. It employs 310.000 people in more than 60countries.

Federalno ministarstvo prometa i komunikacija i Agencija zaprivatizaciju FBiH objavili su javni poziv za dostavljanje ponuda

za dokapitalizaciju JP B&H Airlines d.o.o. Sarajevo. Vlada Fede-racije BiH, kao ve}inski vlasnik ovog avioprijevoznika, precizirala jeda ponu|a~ kao ulog unese mlazni/e avion/e kapaciteta najmanje100 sjedi{ta, bilo nabavkom novog/novih aviona ili kori { tenih, ali ~ijastarost ne prelazi deset godina. Odabrani ponu|a~ }e ste}i udio uvlasni{tvu JP B&H Airlines u visini od 49 posto osnovnog kapitala.

U RS-U MILIJARDA KM ZA NAVODNJAVANJE

Vlada Republike Srpske predvi|a da do 2017. godine u sis t e menavodnjavanja u Semberiji, Posavini, Li j e v~e polju i Popovom

GAS UMJESTO LO@-ULJA

Elektroprivreda BiH i BH-Gas pokre}u zajedni~ke aktivnosti zaizradu studijskih dokumenata za proizvodnju elektri~ne ene-

rgije iz gasa u Termoelektrani Kakanj, odnosno proizvodnju to-plotne i elektri~ne energije iz termoelektrane i toplane koja bi seradila blizu Sarajeva. Ulaganje iznosi 200.000 KM, gdje bi objestrane u~estvovale sa po 50 posto. Namjera je da postoje}i blo-kovi u Termoelektrani Kakanj imaju mogu}nost potpaljivanja sagasom kao energentom, od nosno da se lo` ulje koje se koristi zapo tpalu kotlova zamijeni gasom. Gasovod Semizovac – Zenicaprolazi 300 metara od Termoelektrane Kakanj.

REKORDNA PROIZVODNJA U RUDNIKU „KREKA“

Rudari „Kreke“ ostvarili su izuzetne rezultate ve} na po~etku pro -{log mjeseca. Rekordna dnevna proizvodnja uglja ostvarena je

3. jula i iznosila je 7.773,3 tone, ili 100,4 posto. Za juni os t varenaje rekordna proizvodnja od195.000 tona uglja. Osimrealizacije godi{njeg pla -na od 2.225.000 tonauglja, radi se intenzivnona uvo|enju novog „{iro-kog ~ela“ u rudniku „Mra-mor“ i na generalnomremontu bagera u rud-niku „Dubrave“.

ADDITIONAL CAPITALIZATION OF B&H AIRLINES

The Federal Ministryof Traffic and Com-

munication and the Pri-vatization Agency of FBiHpublished an official re-quest for the submission of proposals for the additional capital-ization of the public company B&H Airlines d.o.o. Sarajevo. TheGovernment of the Federation of BiH, as the majority owner ofthis airline comp any, requested that the proposal should includeeither a used or a new aircraft or aircrafts with minimum capac-ity of 100 seats, and not more than 10 years of age. The chosenproposal candidate will become a partial owner of the B&H Air-lines with 49% of equity

ONE BILLION BAM FOR THE IRRIGATION OF RS

The Government of the Republic of Srpska estimates that aboutone billion BAM will be invested in the irrigation of Semberija,

Posavina, the Lijev~e field and the Popovo field by 2017. Accord-ing to a study of the sustainable development of irrigation sys-tems in RS, 70.000hectares could be irri-gated while only 7.000are being irrigated atthe moment. The revi-talization of old and theconstruction of new irri-gation systems are pla-nned for the future.

GAS INSTEAD OF LIGHT DISTILLATE OIL

The Electricity Company of BiH an BH-Gas are initiating jointactivities for designing documentation for the production of

electrical power from gas in the Thermoelectric power plantKakanj, that is, for the production of thermal and electrical powerat a thermoelectric power plant near Sarajevo. The investmentamounts to 200.000 BAM and both sides would contribute with

half of the amount. The intention isto make the existing blocks of theThermoelectric power plant Kakanjbe ignitable with gas instead of lightdistillate oil. The gas pipeline Semi-zovac – Zenica passes 300 metersaway from the Thermoelectric powerplant Kakanj.

RECORD PRODUCTION AT THE „KREKA“ MINE

The miners of „Kreka“ achieved extraordinary results at the be-ginning of last month. The record in daily production of coal

was broken on July 3 amounting to 7.773,3 tons, that is 100,4%.Another record in production was broken in June with 195.000tons of coal. The Committee of the Association of Independent Profes-sional Photographers of Europe (PPofE) dedicated this

year's Life Achievement Award in the area of photography toone of the oldest and most famous living photographers in Eu-rope, Alija M. Ak{amija from Sarajevo.

The "Life Achievement Award for work of the highest standardsof creative analog and digital photography" is given once a yearand to one member of the Association only, and this is the firsttime the award is presented to a photographer from the areaof ex-Yugoslavia. Ak{amija was awarded on July 10 in thegallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo.Alija M. Ak{amija was born in Rogatica in 1919 and is one ofthe most famous photographers outside of BiH. He was edu-cated in Sarajevo, Belgrade and the United States. He exhib-ited both independently and in groups in all major worldcenters for photography. He is the winner of a large number ofboth international and national awards, diplomas and medals.

"Nagrada za ìvotno djelo u prepoznavanju najvi{ihstandarda u kreativnoj analognoj i digitalnoj fotografiji" dodje-ljuje se jednom godi{nje i samo jednom ~lanu Asocijacije, iovo je prvi put da se ona dodijeli fotografu s podru~ja biv{e Ju-goslavije. Ak{amiji je nagrada uru~ena 10. jula u galeriji Aka-demije likovnih umjetnosti u Sarajevu.Alija M. Ak{amija ro|en je u Rogatici 1919. godine i jedan je odnajpoznatijih bh. fotografa van BiH. NEW NOVEL "GHAZI ISA-BEG"

"Ghazi-Isa beg ", a new spiritual and historical novel thatquite accurately paves the way through an important pe-

riod in Bosnian history - a period of cultural change and reli-gious identity and the acceptance of the second Islamic circlein the European environment - was presented in July at theBosnjak Institute in Sarajevo.

The author is the writer Ha -zim Akmadì}, who has withthis novel after the previoustwo - "Neimar" and "Gh aziHusrev-beg ", comp le ted atrilogy dedicated to the fo u -n der of Sarajevo, Sko pje,Novi Pazar and [a b ac - Gha -zi Ishak -bey Isakovi}.

Akmadì} claims that the grave of Isa-bey, about which historianshave different claims, is located in the backyard of the Tzar’smosque in Sarajevo. PRVI JEVREJSKI FILM FESTIVAL

USarajevu je od 4. do 6. jula o d r an prvi Jevrejski film festi-val (JFF) "London – Zagreb – Saraje vo". Festival je otvo-

ren izlo`bom fo tografija "Tragovima ìdovske kultu re" teprojekcijom filma "Krivotvor itelj", ovogodi{njeg dobitnika Os -kara za najbolji strani film. Ljubitelji filma vidjeli su desetakigranih, kratkometra`nih te doku-mentarnih ostvarenja. Festival jepokrenut u cilju upoznavanja s je-vrejskom kulturom i poticanjamultikulturnog dijaloga u {iroj za-jednici, te upoznavanja sa film-skim ostvarenjima jevrejsketematike iz cijelog svijeta.

THE FIRST JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL

The first Jewish Film Festival (JFF) "London - Zagreb - Sara-jevo" was held in Sarajevo from July 4 to 6. The festival

was opened with the exhibition of photographs „In the stepsof Jewish culture" and the screening of the film "Counter-feiter", which is this year's Oscar winner for best foreign film.

Film lovers could watch a dozen of films,both documentary and short. The festivalwas established with an aim of introducingJewish culture and encouraging multi-cul-tural dialogue in the broader community,and also for the purpose of presenting Jew-ish-themed films from all over the world.

“Jewish Film Festival is one of thosethings that will include Sarajevo in the category of world me-tropolises simply because there is almost no large and im-portant world city that does not host the JFF”, says thePresident of the Jewish Community in BiH, Jakob Finci.

GOLDEN BUNCH TO THE MOVIE "EDWARD"

38movies from 13 countries were screened at the Inter-national Festival of Short Movie, which is organized by

the Association of Citizens Art Festival Stolac. The second edi-tion of the Festival of Short Movies Stolac held from July 4 to8 offered besides movie screenings supporting music, art andliterary activities. An international jury decided to give the "Gol-den bunch" for the best animated film to the film "Edward” byKatrin Nicklas from Germany. The "Silver bunch” went to theshort film "Room for girls” by Mary Gigante from the UnitedStates. The special award was given to the Sarajevo cinema–coordinator Halid Buni} for his long dedication to the popu-larization of film art.

Na me|unarodnoj smotri kratkometra`nih filmova koju orga-nizira Udruènje gra|ana Art Festival Stolac prikazano je 38

filmova iz 13 zemalja. Drugi Festival kratkog filma Stolac od 4.do 8. jula, pored filmskih projekcija, ponudio je i prate}emuzi~ke, likovne i knjièvne sadràje.Internacionalni iri odlu~ioje da "Zlatni grozd" za najbolji film pripadne animiranom filmu"Edward" autorice Katrin Nicklas iz Njema~ke. OPERA DIVA SANELA RED@EPAGI] PASSED AWAY

37-year-old BiH opera diva Sanela Redèpagi} died in Italy onJuly 3 after a short and serious illness. The great opera

artist had been hospitalized in Milano, where she, after fourmonths of treatment, lost her battle for life. Last year shewas diagnosed with breast cancer. Since 1992 until 1997Sanela Redèpagi} was a member of the ensemble of theOpera in Ljubljana. At Sarajevo’s Opera she played roles indrama plays and also performed at concerts such as„Cavalleria rusticana " by Mascagni, (Mamma Lucia),"Spring in Opera" , "Duchess of chardash " (ContessaStasi) by Kalman ,"Figaro’s feast" by Mozart, "Nabucco" byVerdi (Fenena) and "Srebrenica Women". In December

2002 she performed at a concert in New York as the UN rep-resentative of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s young artists, and in2003 at the concert Srebrenica-New York in the oratorio Sre-brenica’s Inferno by composer \elo Jusi}. She was buried onJuly 12 in a cemetery in Zenica.

UItaliji je 3.jula nakon kratke i te{ke bolesti preminula 37-godi{nja bh. operna diva Sanela Redèpagi}. Velika operna

umjetnica bila je u bolnici u Milanu, u kojoj je nakon ~etirimjeseca lije~enja izgubila bitku za ìvot. Pro{legodine joj je dijagnosticiran rak dojke. SanelaRedèpagi} je od 1992. do 1997. godine bila ~lan-ica ansambla Opere u Ljubljani. U Sarajevskojoperi ostvarila je uloge u predstavama i nastupena koncertima "Cavalleria rusticana" Mascagnija,(Mamma Lucia), "Prolje}e u Operi", "Kneginja~arda{a" Kalmana (Kontesa Stasi), "Figarov pir"Mozarta (Cherubino), "Nabucco" Verdija (Fenena)te "Srebreni~anke". U decembru 2002. pjevala je na koncertuu New Yorku kao predstavnica mladih umjetnika BiH pri UN-u,a 2003. na koncertu Srebrenica – New York u oratoriju Sre-breni~ki inferno, kompozitora \ele Jusi}a.

Ukopana je 12. jula na groblju u Zenici.

I did have my ideas but I never asked who sent her thosemessages. I experienced a trauma and it all affected mystate of mind, and my dreams. For example, last night Idreamt that she was playing badminton with some friendsthat are basically as awful as she is. At a certain point theball disappeared into the forest.

And of course my wife went to get the ball. Instead of theball, I dreamt, she found a frog. The frog was trapped, andshe asked my wife to set her free and she would make threeof her wishes come true. She didn’t have to say it twice. Mywife freed the frog immediately.

“Thank you”, the frog said, «but I forgot to mention thateverything you wish for, your husband will get ten timesmore».

She was silent for a few seconds, and she said it was allright and O.K. She accepted the rules of the game. And so...

“My first wish is to be the most beautiful woman in theworld”, she wished.

“Do you know that in that case your husband will be themost beautiful man in the world? Women will be chasingafter him!”, the frog warned her.

“Yes! But I will be the most beautiful woman, and we willbe the perfect couple”, she reasoned wisely.

Then she wished to be the richest in the whole world.The frog warned again that in that case her husband - that’sme- would be ten times richer.

“Whatever! What is his, is mine too”, my wife didn’t back off.When it was time to utter her third wish she spent a mo-ment to think back. She scratched her head and...

“And now, frog, I would like to have a smallheart attack”, she asked.

The frog laughed out loud and said:“Such evil doesn’t exist even infairytales.”

I stopped dreaming aboutwhat happened next. I wo - ke up in sweat. I re a c hedfor my health ce r tificateand went to the doc-tor’s. He studied mecarefully and asked:

Pristojno ìvimo. I mislim da me ona pristojno vara. Tim prije {tosam u njenom mobilnom pro~itao poruke: “Nasloni glavu na

moje rame” i “Samo na tebe mislim”.Jesam slutio, ali nisam pitao od koga su poruke. U traumu sam

pao i sve se odrazilo na moje psihi~ko stanje. I na snove. Recimo,sino} sam sanjao kako igra badmintona s prijateljicama koje su,u biti, kuje poput nje. U neko doba, loptica im je odletjela u {umu.

Naravski, moja èna ode po lopticu. Umjesto loptice, sanjam ja,prona{la je àbu. @aba je bila uhva}ena u zamku. I zatraìla je odmoje ène da je oslobodi zamke, pa }e joj ona, kao, ispuniti trièlje. [to mojoj drugarici nije trebalo dva puta ponavljati. Odmahje oslobodila àbu.

“Hvala”, re~e joj àba, “ali sam ti zaboravila naglasiti da }esve {to poèli{ tvoj mu` dobiti deset puta vi{e”.

[utjela je par sekundi ova moja, pa rekla kako je ol rajt i ok,kako nema ni{ta protiv, te da pristaje na pravila igre. Dakle...

“Prva mi je èlja da budem najljep{a na svijetu”, poèljela je.“Zna{ li da }e ti u tom slu~aju suprug biti daleko najljep{i

mu{karac na svijetu? Proganjat }e ga ene!”, opomenula ju je aba.“Da! Ali }u ja biti najljep{a na svijetu i bit }emo savr{en par”,

rezonirala je moja mudrica. Onda je poèljela postati najbogatija na kugli zemaljskoj. @aba

joj je fino objasnila da }e joj u tom slu~aju mu`, biva ja, biti desetputa bogatiji.

“Hajde, bogati! Ono {to je njegovo i moje je”, nije se dala mojakuja.

Sad, kad je na red stigla i tre}a èlja, malkice se zamislila mojaèna. ê{kala se po glavi i...

“A sada, àbo, ho}u da dobijem lagani sr~ani udar”, traìla je. @aba se grohotom nasmijala i rekla:“E, kuje poput tebe ni u bajkama vi{e ne stanuju.“[ta je dalje bilo, ne dosanjah. Probudio sam se u goloj vodi.

Madame Tussauds will repair the waxfigure of Adolf Hitler that a visitor be-

headed at its new Berlin branch. On Sa-turday, the first day the museum opened,a 41-year-old Berlin man pushed asidetwo employees to attack the wax Hitler fi-gure, ripping off its head while shouting,"No more war!" He was only the secondperson to enter the museum.The incident

has triggered further debate over the fi-gure's appropriateness. In June, BerlinMayor Klaus Wowereit urged the museumto co n sider carefully whether to includeHitler. The museum near the German ca-pital's Brandenburg Gate had pledged toportray Hitler without glorifying him. Itsexhibit showed a downtrodden Hitler sit-ting in his bunker beneath a map of Europe,monitoring the advance of allied troops fromthe east and west. Madame Tussauds reit -erated Monday that Hitler "stands for a de-finitive part of Berlin's history that can notbe denied."
