Can you believe we are in the final month of 2012?! Time sure does fly. Looking back it has been a fun year yet again with the Chamber. Last January we had our Annual Gala after a weeklong snow storm, in March we revived the Auction with a St. Patrick’s Day theme, May saw the annual Business Expo/Bite of Shelton (this event seems to be more and more popular every year), and in September we held our 2nd Annual Golf Tournament with a full field of players! Combine those events with our regular after hours and monthly meetings and it was a busy year!

Know someone else who should join the Chamber?

Please call (360) 426-2021 or email [email protected].

My oh my. Another year has nearly come and gone… and what a year it’s been! I’d like to take a minute to say thank you – to you, our Chamber members, who strive to make Mason County a better place to work, play and live. It is because of your support of the Chamber that we can make a difference for our busi-ness community.

Often, I have heard, “I don’t have time to attend your events, so I’m not benefiting from my Chamber membership.” I always cringe a little when I hear this, as the Chamber is so much more than merely networking and events.

Yes, I strongly encourage you to attend the events. The networking opportunities are a key reason that people join. The more people you meet, the more you know; the more often you see each other, the stron-ger the relationship. Seems simple, yes?

The other reason that I see people join is for the advocacy and representation that the Chamber provides. I know that you’re busy. You are running your business, your personal life and trying to find time for a social life. You don’t have the time to review the initiatives on the ballot that can affect your business and the last thing on your to-do list is to go to City Hall and make a statement on any given topic – let alone find the time to look into what top-ics are being discussed.

The Governmental Affairs Committee makes time for you. The GAC assigns homework to committee members to review the initiatives and come back with support and opposition recommendations that benefit your business. Because of you, I can attend the Commissioner meet-ings and say, “Hey, have you thought about the impact that xyz has on our business community?” Speaking on behalf of 350 businesses in Mason County gives the cre-dence for our elected officials to consider what I’m conveying.

If it were not for our members, we wouldn’t be trying to find ways to build our economic core, strengthen businesses, promote shopping locally and encouraging tourism. It is because of the Chamber’s members that we are able to make a dif-ference. I thank you for another year of investing in your business. May the next year be the best yet!

Shop local: A Holiday Tradition in mason county As you can see from the Santa photo (below) provided by the Mason County Historical Society, the Chamber has encour-aged folks in Mason County to “Shop Local” for decades. This year, there are three easy ways that you can make an impact, locally, with your holiday spending!

•Purchase local buck$ as gifts this Holiday SeasonLOCAL BUCK$ are a community gift certificate that are ac-cepted at more than thirty locations county-wide. They are the perfect holiday gift for family, employees and friends and by pur-chasing LOCAL BUCK$ you are keeping your money in Mason County. • Frequent local shops and businesses to find unique giftsBuy your Christmas presents from small, local businesses and self-employed people. For example: purchase a cookbook at Sage Bookstore for your favorite Sous-Chef, pick up a coffee basket for your co-worker at Urraco Coffee, treat a friend to jewelry or a distinctive piece of home décor from Lynch Creek Floral or Neil’s Pharmacy, purchase stunning clothes at 2nd Street Design Studio or at Pier 101, or find fabulous wines at Walter Dacon Wines to take along to your holiday parties.

•Look for Shop Local coupons, offering deals, discounts and specials throughout the month of December. You can print them at www.sheltonchamber.org/shoplocal or stop by the Chamber office to pick up your copy. Mason County is unique and our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of our distinctive character. Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions. You also save money by shopping at home. You drive less, save time, and you’d be surprised how often the retail prices are lower as well. You can reduce your environmental impact by cutting out those long drives to the big city.

Your purchases help Mason County not only keep our citizens employed locally, but also attract new entrepreneurs and skilled workers seeing as towns that preserve their one-of-a-kind busi-nesses and distinctive character are more successful in recruiting.

You can help in this process! You may be surprised to know that for every $100 spent locally, $74 remains here through sales tax, infrastructure and employment. Shop Local, Give LOCAL BUCK$.

Welcome to christmastown, U.S.A.Justin Cowling, mason County historical Society

This Santa was erected by the Shelton Mason County Chamber of Commerce in the spring of 1962.  It was originally on Railroad Avenue to greet the increase of visitors brought to Western Washington by the Seattle's Second World's Fair.

The Santa then became a fixture at "Santa's Village" in Post Office Park until it was given away in 1997.  It now resides on Hunter's Farm in the Skokomish Valley.

Guided Food DrivesAre you involved in a Food Drive during the holidays or other time of the year? Mason County Public Health asks you to consider promoting a guided food drive.

Obesity is a major health epidemic in America, leading to many chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Obesity exceeds smoking as public health enemy #1 when it comes to cost, adding an astounding $190 billion to national healthcare spending annually. Since food drives typically ask for non-perishable food, the donations they tend to receive are highly processed and poor in nutri-tional value. To compound the problem, people living in poverty are disproportion-ately at higher risk for obesity and related chronic diseases.

One way to combat this epidemic is to donate fewer 'processed' foods and more 'whole' foods.

Processed foods (e.g. chips, white bread, pastries, and sugary cereals) are high in sugar, saturated/trans fats, and salt; low in fiber, vitamins, and minerals; and provide little nutritional value per calorie.

On the other hand, whole foods (e.g. brown rice, whole wheat pasta, bran/wheat cereals, fruit, vegetables, and nuts) are nutrient-dense and provide fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that keep our bodies full and healthy. Visit www.co.mason.wa.us/health for more information.

local Shelton man creates a christmas WonderlandStephen Springs | Christmas Wonderland

I dearly remember Christmas’ long ago… the anticipation of the holiday season and the special meaning it held for me and my family. Most those who shared those wonderful times in my youth have passed, but the memories come rushing back each year as Christmas time draws nearer. The years have come and gone, but the promise of Christmas still inspires me. That little boy’s hopes and dreams live on now in a middle aged man’s body and mind that come to life through Christmas Wonderland.

It all began by decorating my driveway. My creation became a little bigger and more complex each year. My neighbors praised my efforts and several years ago a good friend suggested I expand and create some-thing more. It was then that the idea for Christmas Wonderland was born.

Working most of the fol-lowing year, it was finally ready to open in December of 2004.

It rained almost every day, but many ventured out and told me how they enjoyed it.

Now, nearly a decade later, Christmas Wonderland has reopened, featuring expanded trails that cut through a beautiful Mason County forest. The amount of individual attractions numbers over 100, filled with commercial displays, 1/4 scale buildings, window displays and animated

inflatable characters, with the premier feature of a narrated nativity scene and other religious displays glo-rifying Christ’s birth. There is also a fire pit where caroling takes place, hot refreshments are offered on site, and Christmas trees are available for purchase.

Come create memories that you will cherish for decades to come! Admis-sion is only $4/adults and $3/child.

We are just 4.2 miles out Arca-dia Road at 11 SE Chan-nel Point Road. Open nightly through December 29, 2012 from 4:30 – 10:00 PM. Call for information at (360) 463-0522 or like us on Facebook at Christ-mas Wonderland Shelton.

Anna’s bay returns from new York city for messiah encoreThe Anna’s Bay Chorale’s annual performance of Handel’s beloved masterwork will be extra special in 2012. That’s because this year’s concerts in Shelton and Olympia will arrive just two weeks after the Chorale made their New York City debut as the anchor choir in the annual holiday performance of “Messiah” at the Lincoln Center!

Over 70 Olympic Peninsula singers, ranging in age from 14 to 84 participated in a five-day residency at Avery Fisher Hall in preparation for their Big Apple debut. Now that they’re home, the Chorale rejoins the South Shore Chamber Orchestra for per-formances in the Shelton High School Performing Arts Center on Friday, December 7 at 7:00 PM and Sunday, December 9 at 4:00 PM; as well as making our Thurston County debut with a performance at the beautiful Minnaert Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday evening, December 8 at 7:00 PM.

Shelton cinemas partners with osaka Sushi & Asian bistro for outstanding networking event

Shelton Cinemas hosted the Chamber’s Business After Hours on Wednesday, November 7. The event was red-carpet worthy with stunning hors d’oeuvres provided by Osaka Sushi & Asian Bistro and a full house! Shelton Cinemas Manager Kathy Beimer welcomed more than fifty Chamber members, including the Shelton High School DECA students, and guests to a successful evening of networking.

Like so many other small-town theaters, the Shelton Cinemas and the Skyline Drive-In are faced with a stark choice: to invest nearly $190,000 in the equipment needed to convert the two theaters from 35mm film to digital projectors, or to let the final credits roll...

We want this story to have a happy ending!

There are a number of opportunities to support Shelton Cinemas as with individual opportunities starting at just $50. And, for interested businesses, on-screen advertising are included in your sponsor package.

For more information visit sheltoncin-emas.com/conversion or “Like” Shelton Cinemas on Facebook.

Upon Kamin’s appointment, Bill Kendrick moved into the president position, vacating the vice president’s role. Kamin replaces Carl Duke who decided to pursue other ministry op-portunities after serving as executive director for two years.

“Our primary focus moving forward will be on improving the effectiveness of our organization in meeting our mission of mobilizing local churches to transform lives and communities in the name of Christ. To that end, we plan to better assist our church ministry co-ordinators in developing gap ministries and recruiting volunteers, enhancing our fiscal capabilities and adding even more partner churches this coming year,” added Kendrick. Mason County Love INC currently has 17 partner churches.

Love INC operates a clearinghouse where requested needs are verified and then matched with the appropriate church ministry, community organiza-tion and/or volunteer for help. Current ministries provided by the Love INC network are firewood, children’s clothing (through Northwest Children’s Out-reach), a backpack ministry for released offenders, furniture, Blankets of Love, medical equipment, and hats for oncol-ogy patients.

The long-term goal is to offer ad-ditional relational ministries such as budget mentoring, stress management, strengthening families programs and job readiness classes.

After weeks of assessment, deliberation and prayer, the board of Love INC of Mason County implemented a staff responsibility reorganization to better meet their mission of mobilizing local churches to work together to reach out to people in need in Mason County. Jayni Kamin, a founding board member of Mason County Love INC and former Mason County Commis-sioner and past Shelton School Board member, was appointed as part-time interim executive director effective November 1.

Harstine Island community choir’s Annual christmas concert Do you know what Handel, Henry VIII and Watts all have in common? They each wrote beautiful Christmas music! Many know the Messiah, but few have heard the lovely Green Grow’th the Holly, or original versions of favorites such as What Child Is This?

Mason County’s Harstine Island Com-munity Choir’s annual Christmas Con-certs provide the opportunity to experi-ence one of the great pleasures of the season - carol singing.

From Vaughan Williams wassail songs of England to Billings Early-American Christmas Carols, there is something for every listener. The English rural tradition of church-choir singing with instruments, known as West Gallery Music, has been brought to our traditional American carols for toe-tapping accompaniment of banjo, guitar, fiddle, cello and flute/tin whistle. The tradition of the tune being carried in the tenor part and sometimes doubled in the upper octave add an interesting nuance of sound. Many of the carols we enjoy every year have a folk or dance tradition, with quite different poetry, tempos and harmonies. Hearing carols performed in their earlier rendi-tions brings a new and interesting twist.

The donation-only concerts are performed in three locations throughout Mason County so you can attend a concert near you. For more information please visit the Harstine Island Choir’s website at www.harstinechoir.org or contact a choir member.
