Our February speaker was Bryanna Ryan, Museum Curator of Placer County Archives. She

gave an outstanding presentation on the seven Placer County

Museums. What each have to offer and their focus in their geographical location. Very interesting & informative.

THE SPEAKER OF THE MONTH

Our March speaker will be Retired Auburn Journal reporter Gus Thomson. He worked at the Auburn Journal for 31 years,

writing an estimated 20,000 stories about Auburn people, politics, crime and more.

SIR OF THE MONTH

I’ve noticed a pattern in these presentations. Many of you have had careers that often go unsung, professions that you devote 30m years or more to, with never a mention in the paper, never a feature on the evening news. Careers that take care of the rest of us, that keep things— basic things— running, not just smoothly, but running, period. One of those careers is pipe fitter/plumber. That was Bill Hirsch’s career. Bill is our Sir of the Month for October. Now, most of you think: a plumber: toilets, faucets, O.K.? But Hoover Dam has plumbing, too. A Saturn 5 rocket has more pipes and valves than you can count. Well, let’s start at the beginning. Bill was born in 1951, August 8th, to be exact, in Sioux City, Iowa. His family moved to Rio Linda when Bill was two. He grew up with three siblings: two brothers and a sister. He graduated from Rio Linda High School in 1969. From there he attended Sacramento City Junior college, earning an AA in police science. Marriage to his high school sweetheart, Roberta, came in 1971. A practical opportunity came along and Bill tried his hand at a floortile business in Sunnyvale. It did quite well, but he was newly-wed, and his new wife did not appreciate the hours. Together they had 5 children, all girls. The marriage ended in 1990. Bill was even handier at plumbing and pipe-fitting, and apprenticed with the pipe-fitters union until he attained journeyman. Those of you familiar with the union world know what it’s like to hire yourself out from the hall. You never know what’s going to be on the board when you walk in that morning. The job could last a day, it could last a month. Bill relished a good challenge, like wrestling a valve half the size of a Volkswagen and making sure it aligned to within a micro millimeter. Every job was something different, often in some other part of the state. New construction, oil refineries, waste treatment plants. If a project had pipes in the plans, and name me a building that doesn’t, Bill was likely to be there. He worked out of the hall for 15 years. During the latter part of that time, he earned a teaching credential from Purdue University and devoted four years to passing on his knowledge to apprentices at the Sacramento Pipe- fitting Apprentice Program, one of the largest training facilities of its kind. Then Bill entered a world few of us are even aware exists: the Northern California Youth Cor-rectional Facility, in Stockton. For those who don’t abide fancy titles, it’s “kid prison.” This isn’t your local juvie hall. This is the juvenile equivalent of “the big house.” At the time there were four such self-contained worlds throughout Stockton. It was a city within the city: four high schools, a full-on hospital, kitchen and dining hall, and dormitories to feed and house a couple of thousand kids. Bill gave them 15 years, following the plumber’s dictum, “If it’s round and has a hole in it, we’re responsi-ble for it.” He didn’t just keep the water flowing, he looked after the refrigeration and instrumentation throughout the sprawling facility. While he was at NCYCC, Bill met the love of his life, the lady who would be his second wife. Betsy was a parole agent. She had two boys from her previous marriage. As luck would have it, their first date included five children. That couldn’t have been too much of an impediment, for they soon married, and they’re still going strong. Between the State and the union, Bill was able to retire at 55, in 2006. But that hasn’t slowed him down. He and Betsy have 17 grandchildren to keep track of. Bill gravitated back to the justice system. He has served on the grand jury and as a court-appointed special advocate. As a special advocate, he is again helping young offenders, this time more directly. These are kids who are under the jurisdiction of the court, but without a lot of options. Bill gives them something they probably haven’t had a lot of: quality time, a companion who listens and doesn’t judge. Sometimes, with Betsy, they work with the whole family. He says the main job is to build relationships. Bill estimates he racks up about 400 miles a month in this endeavor. He was at the Sirs branch 138, which took in Auburn, Cool. and Forest Hill, and served there as “Big Sir. ” He’s been with branch 37 since 2010. He keeps the faith at Auburn Grace Church. He lives by the encouragement he would like to offer here: “Find something to do for people.” Gentlemen, Bill Hirsch. A man of his word. Sir Frank Nissen, Profiler
