Once upon a time, somewhere, a scribe produced or

copied a MS Latin Bible without the normal divisions of the Old and New Testament--a Bible with a mixture of Jerome's revisions, Old Latin, and perhaps a number of earlier versions. The books of the New Testament are mingled with the books of the Old Testament and Apocrypha, to form one continuous narrative. This unusual ordering of the text is not due to faulty binding, as each book, except the Psalterium, follows the previous book on the same folio, and sometimes in the same column.

It is a manuscript on vellum, produced in the early 13th century (probably before 1230), in Gothic script, 2 column of 62 lines, with 71 decorated initials, 210 leaves of ca. 261, 215 x 150 mm. Genesis through Judges 8:46 (leaves 1-209) wanting in this MS. Bound in 17th century limp vellum, with the ownership inscription of the Celestines of Sens, 1681. Chapter numbers, when present, are also written in a different contemporary hand in the margins matching the typical 1250 “Paris” Vulgate. There are several differences in the numbering of the chapters, probably due to use of the Old Latin text. or other pre-13th century versions. There are no separate titles for the books, only running titles. Some books end with “Explicit ....” and most begin with “Incipit ....” usually with a large decorated initial. The Psalterium has a book title (in a later hand at top of first page), but no running titles, and begins and ends on a separate folio from the rest.

How and when did these beasts, mythological and legendary animals invade the churches and their Missals, and now the Biblia Irregularis?

It has been suggested by some scholars, Especially Emile Mâle, that we must look closely at the Greek, Egypt and Persia textiles that came into France and hung in the great cathedrals and holy places during the early Middle Ages. He writes, on p. 342, that

the most priceless collections of textiles in France is that of the Cathedral of Sens. There are wonderful silks, some of which may date from the fifth century … All these fabrics are Eastern … Christian Egypt, from Alexandria, or from the famous workshops of Panopolis … Others are Byzantine … Persia of the Sassanids … Chaldea, and later Assyria, had created the most powerful of all decorative arts. It was there that the composite monsters were invested with a terrifying realism, and symmetrical affronted animals were given religious grandeur. Heraldic art was created in Chaldea many centuries before our Middle Ages. The heritage fell to Persia, and along with it, the secret of color … Persia contributed … light and joy to the world what was beginning. The symmetrical figures, the heraldic animals are usually enclosed in circles, too, lions following each other in dignified procession from a continuous frieze that recalls the relief sculptures of Susa …

For centuries our churches imported their most precious fabrics from the East … never more abundant in France than at the time of the crusades … Since these hangings, covered with monsters and animals , had been thought worthy to decorate the house of God, why should they not be copied on the capitals of the sanctuary?

1st section of the Canon

HEBREW CANONICAL BOOKS TRANSLATED BY JEROME

The ordering of the Canon has taken on a Christian characteristic intent on converting the world to Christianity. Note that chapters 1, 3-5 of Baruch have rubricated Christian interpolations

Ruth follows Judges. Both THJ (Translated from the Hebrew by Jerome)

Samuel and Kings are noted as I-IIII Kings. JP (Jerome Prologue) THJ

I-II Chronicles follows IV Kings. Chronicles is as Jerome suggested a “Chronicle of the Whole of Sacred History”, dealing with the events from Adam to Cyrus, King of Persia. The emphasis here is the importance of the Exile and places the emphasis on David and not the Exodus. A very Christian thing to do since Jesus is the descendent of David, his lineage traced through the exile through Eleazar by Nehemiah.

The Prophets follow II Chronicles with Jeremiah, Baruch (rejected by Jerome but inserted from the Old Latin), and Lamentations as one book, with “Incipit prologus saincti Jeronimi presbter in Jeremia propheta.” Baruch follows chapter 51 [i.e. 52] of Jeremiah without chapter numbers (supplied 1-6 in a contemporary hand). Chapters 1, 3-5 have rubricated interpolations with reference to Christ and the Church. Chapter 6 is the “Letter of Jeremiah”. Lamentations follows the “Letter of Jeremiah” with variant reading beginning “Et factum e[st] postq[u]m in captivitatem redact[us] est i[s]hr[e]l iherusalem deserta e[st] sedit ihere / mias flens ... et eiulans dixit.” THJ, except Baruch, inserted from the Old Latin.

Daniel follows Ezekiel as one of the Major Prophets. Both have prologues. THJ

Prologue to the Twelve Prophets, followed by the Twelve, but no individual prologue for each book. THJ

Job (JPTHJ) At the end is “Incipit prosa(?) job” beginning, “Job quoq[um] exempler paticitan que mistesia suo sermonu[m]. Followed by “Incipit argumentum iob” beginning Jtera quidem habitasse iob auxitidem in fati[qum] idum [et] arabia.

GREEK BOOKS TRANSLATED/EDITED BY JEROM

2nd Section

Psalms (Septuaginta Emendatus), without Prologue. Jerome’s ‘Gallican Psalter’ begins a separate section, that is, it does not begin on the same leaf as the ending of Job, where there is room. The paper and text are darker for 1st leaf recto as it had been exposed as a front leaf to a section. “Psalterium” at the top in a later hand.

3rd Section

I- II Maccabees begins the 3rd section of the Canon, as the entrance to the New Testament. No prologues. Inserted from the Old Latin.

The Pauline Epistles follow with prologue/prefaces but Jerome’s name is not mentioned.

Romans through Hebrews, each with a short prologue/preface, revised from the Old Latin by a person or persons unknown.

4th Section

Acts of the Apostles. Preface by Jerome, but probably not translated by him.

Apocalypse. Preface by Jerome, but probably not translated by him. Not attributed to John

5th Section

The Seven Canonical epistles. “Incipit prologus [s]epte[m] epistolaru[m] canonicarum.” James, Peter, John, Jude are noted as saints. Probably not revised by Jerome. Note that all 7 of the “Catholic” Epistles are part of the Canon

Disputed/Forbidden/Hidden Books

 

The Parables of Solomon with a Prologue of Jerome: “Incipit prologus s[an]c[t]i iheronimi p[res]b[ite]ri in parabole of salomonis.” It is said that Jerome translated Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs, and Hebrews in three days. These were at times thought to be hidden books only to be read in the churches.

Four books of the Apocrypha translated by Jerome, but rejected by him

the text. Chaps. 3-16 without chapter numbers or markings of chapters except in another contemporary hand. No illuminations, only initials. A “virgin” continuous text without any markings.

• ‘JEROME’S “PARIS” VULGATE •   CHAPTER DIVISIONS

•  • Stephen Langton in his commentary on the minor

prophets used chapter references at the end of the 12th century and in their modern form as early as 1203. Between ca. 1220 and 1230, chapter divisions became standardized. By the 1st quarter of the 13th century almost every book was divided and this spread throughout Europe. Old bibles were corrected and new ones were copied with the chapter divisions.

• PROLOGUES

By about the same time, a typical “Paris”

Bible would have had a set of 58 or 64 prologues including several that were new. All were attributed to Jerome, yet it is doubtful if he wrote any for the Bible itself. These prologues began to appear in Bibles at a very early date, but probably not while he was still living. They are not part of the Bible, but are short introductions to all books or groups of books. They were to assist the readers in understanding the context and authorship of each Book and in some he gives reasons for accepting or rejecting certain books.

• BIBLIA IRREGULARIS VULGATE•   CHAPTER DIVISIONS•  • Chapter divisions are not standardized as 24

of the 73 books (46 Jewish Scripture, 27 Christian) have minor to major differences in chapter divisions. All the book have been marked and those with different divisions have been corrected in Arabic numerals in the margins of the text and marked in the text where the correct division should be. The Arabic numerals appear to be in a contemporary hand.

• This appears to be one of the corrected old Bibles.

PROLOGUES

There are only 35 prologues, and counting the 3 prologues missing in this copy makes a total of 38 out of 64. There was usually a Prologue to the whole Bible, one to the Pentateuch, and one to Joshua. These books are missing here. Part of Judges is missing, but there was no Prologue to Judges.

Fourteen include Jerome’s name and twenty-one omit it.

 Between 1220 and 1230 the Interpretation began to appear and were standard in 13th century Bibles by ca 1250.

Canon Tables to the Gospels. Translated by Jerome from Eusebius of Caesarea were standard in most 13th cent. Bibles by ca. 1250.
