E D ITO R ’ S N OTE

It’s that time of the month ladies and gentlemen, and while our main features this month comprise locales that can be enjoyed by both genders, the reality is that they are tailor made for the women of our Sultanate.

A tropical escape from a tropical country: Coco Café (Happy 1st Anniversary gals!) isn’t just an eatery that is pretty to look at, but also one that cares about what you put into your stomach. Courtesy of Head Chef, Ms Brenda, we all can enjoy the benefits of the Paleo Diet.

Departing from her usual template, Little Bello’s owner and designer, Mei Law, launched the franchise’s

third branch last month, much to the glee of women who view this outlet as posh and upscale, despite its smaller square footage. I guess it’s not the size that matters, but how effectively you use the space.

Pink. So very pink. Thanks to the efforts of Joline Ho and Evelyn Ting, Brunei is home to a Taiwanese eatery so pink, utilising white furnishings and flora to an extent that it is always mistaken for a bridal shop. Don’t let the powerful ‘girly vibe’ get to you fellas, Food Messenger has a good selection on the menu.

Now for the juicy part! Our hidden gem this month is a monochromatic home with interesting features. This

is the second time in 21 months that I have discovered a home so perfectly up my alley, that maintaining neutrality becomes difficult. Simply put: This residence is gorgeous!

Before I call it a day, I want to congratulate Politeknik students for a successful showcase of their abilities at the 3rd Design Student academy exhibition. Also, I want to point out last month’s feature of Marilyn Kopitiam included an incorrect address and contact. While this causes no harm, I do not believe in running away from a mistake; you own it. So there you have it, stay real everybody and enjoy your September!

Choose classic Rose print sPretty pinks, white wood and nostalgic accessories create a romantic scheme. With their blooming bouquet prints, there’s no denying the feminine nature of this look. Think about a feature wall and use the pattern liberally. If you’re going for a cosy bedroom, layer comfy pillows with knitted blankets. A white four-poster bed and vintage bedside table will complete the look.

Evoke a farmhouse feel Recreate the charm of rural France by using muted textile prints and rustic wood finishes. Paint walls in a delicate duck egg shade, then add furnishings in cream and distressed painted wood. If you can, look for pre-loved furnishings and décor. Enhance the French feel by layering cushions in subtle stripes and eleganttoile prints.

Create a nostalgic feel Go for a vintage-inspired scheme that’s light and bright by adding pretty prints to a pale backdrop. Throw caution to the wind and clash fabric prints! Choose designs like florals, stripes and polka dots in sweet pastels like powder blue and blush pink. Pick very light walls and floors to allow patterns to stand out.

Vintage accessories and feminine accent sChoose classic woven rattan furniture and create an elegant feel by painting an adjacent wall in a blue-grey shade. For other furnishings, mix and match striped and floral fabrics with plain ones for seat covers and cushions. Hang a vintage mirror and finish with plenty of fresh flowers and potted plants.

Mix minimal colour with maximum detailGive a minimal colour scheme an elegant update by incorporating soothing neutrals, pretty fabrics and ornate accessories. For a more sophisticated look, choose a palette of off-white and cream while adding interest with white-washed and distressed wood. Layer accessories with plenty of detail and texture to avoid the overall look becoming too flat.

Embrace craf t smanship

For a space full of character, combine distressed wood with plush upholstery. A wallpaper with a subtle brushstroke design in soft blue or grey sets the tone for this look. Be inspired by prints in chalky hues on cushions and lampshades. For a more traditional look, gather mismatched vases and jugs with ahandcrafted feel.

Two weeks ago, Politeknik Brunei, one of our Sultanate’s leading vocational education providers organised an event at the lobby of the Ministry of Development that acted as a platform for its students to showcase their abilities.

The third exhibition of its kind, hosted by the Design Student Academy (DeSA), which is an internal student body comprising of individuals pursuing their studies in architecture and interior design, took

place from July 26 to 28. Attended by The Minister of Development, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Ghafar and other officials, the minister could be seen wearing a big smile as he did the rounds, checking out the displays while conversing with students.

Politeknik officials, from its Director, Denis Ho Mun Tai and the exhibition chairman, Cikgu Hj Mohammad Reizal bin Mohammad Ali were content to

watch the proceedings as they progressed smoothly. Meanwhile, the lecturers for these two areas of specialisation watched their prodigies with pride as they explained their displays and the processes involved from conceptualisation to model building and mock-up display, to VIPs and other visitors.

After the taking of an official group photo (which is always a great excuse for students, teachers and myself to goof off just a little) – most of those present proceeded to fill a hall to the brim as VIPs, school officials, students and external assessors awaited the commencement of the awards presentation ceremony.

Conducted by the Minister of Development, Politeknik Director and exhibition chairman, the top 10 performing students were recognised for their achievements during the entirety of their diploma studies.

Awang Mohamad Ariffin bin Awang Morsidi and Mohamad Noradha Shah bin Serugi (February 2018 Issue) in their capacity as the front runners were feted with the ‘Outstanding in Overall Performance’ awards. The latter who goes by the moniker ‘Dodachan’ also took to the podium to give a speech, on top of those given by the minister and director.

As part of the diploma, students are required to undertake a six-month internship with a select list of departments from the government and private sectors. In their role as external assessors, 24 representatives were also awarded for their provision of mentorship;

with three from this grouping also honoured for their involvement in the students’ final year projects. With Escapee Brunei (sponsor) and BHC Magazine (collaborator) receiving awards for their involvement, the ceremony came to an end and the exhibition’s tempo picked up.

If you managed to catch the exhibition and engaged a student or two in conversation, then you will know I speak the truth: These students are talented, these students are our future designers.

When it comes to the health and f i tness industr y in Br unei Dar uss alam, there are many players in the game. Garnering a good reputation for itself, Fitness Zone, which was founded by Wu Chun in 2003, can trace its beginnings to its first branch at the Gadong Mall. Fast forward to today, Fitness Zone lays claim to positively affecting change in the lives of more than 17,000 people.

Commemorating its commitment to improving health and fitness across the country, Fitness Zone celebrated its 15th anniversary earlier this year in March

with Wu Chun sharing that it had always been his vision to expand the locally-built brand’s horizons. “Bruneians deserve a bigger, better place to improve their quality of life,” the founder said in reference to when the Kiulap branch opened in 2007.

“It has always been one of my visions to have a place for Bruneians to go be healthy and fit, to have fun while achieving their best selves. Chronic health

problems can be very vicious and it decreases the quality of one’s life. For the past 15 years, Fitness Zone has striven to promote a quality and healthy lifestyle, and it is with pride that we are able to look at the impact caused toward the fitness revolution in Brunei.”

14

The club endeavours to always raise the bar for Bruneians as well as internationally with the aim of being comparable to health clubs in other nations such as Australia and the USA, where on average 7 out of every 10 people are engaged in fitness through club and gym memberships.

This is a great target to aim for within the Brunei context, and considering that, “Throughout the years, Fitness Zone has been able to make dreams come true,” as pointed out by Wu Chun. Actions speak louder than words, and with 15 years of experience beneath their trim waistlines and collective belts, there is no reason to doubt the achievability of a healthy and fit society for the majority of the populace.

F U T U R E D E S I G N S

In continuation of our Politeknik Br unei focus, we retur n again this month to showc ase the c apabil i t ies of the up - and- coming generat ion of Br uneian architec t s and inter ior designers, to whom the t ask of developing aspec t s of the S ult anate wil l f all to.

Returning to Politeknik Brunei this month placed BHC Magazine squarely in the path of two interesting students; the first of which is a young lady who goes by a few names.

Architecture student, Nur Ismahfazeera binti Mohammad Fariz, stifles a giggle following a direct query regarding her family background and history, responding, “I’m rojak,” while wearing a large grin on her face. With Malay, Chinese and Scottish genes present in her family tree, this unique persona goes by Ismah to some, Fazeera to others, as well as Aileen to everyone else.

Sharing her passion for using concrete in her designs, this just-recently-turned 20-year-old discussed

her fondness for stark industrial outlooks, in which Aileen enjoys using concrete and other rough natural materials such as exposed brick to support the ambience of her designs.

Now while the industrial approach is popular in some circles, within the Brunei context it is stark, bare and cold. Appreciated immensely by a niche market, Aileen has blended this industrial design with natural elements that raise the warmth factor by a few notches. “I love sustainable designs and incorporating the environment into my work. I’m not a fan of shiny and fancy materials,” she explains, culminating in an aesthetic that “is timeless.” And therein lies the beauty of it all.

19

Trained at Politeknik to use a suite of software ranging from Sketch-Up and 3DS Max, to Revit and Lumion, this well-spoken individual personally prefers long undulating curves over straight-edged lines and corners, but is more than capable of meeting clientele requirements which often may require a person to put aside their preferences.

“I did my internship at Arch Labs,” Aileen begins, pointing out that in addition to learning to use Photoshop, was given the opportunity to work with real world clients. “In one case I was asked if I could create a commercial gym that had to be industrial in appearance.

I learned a lot here. As a group, these people are very straight forward which I found valuable.”

Sourcing her inspiration from Pinterest and travelling overseas, Aileen acknowledges that she usually brings back ideas and concepts “subconsciously” based on the urban sights and sounds that she is exposed to whenever she travels to the UK. Keeping her skills sharp by taking part in competitions such as the 30th REDEFINE in Malaysia, this young lady is willing to work hard to achieve her goals.

F U T U R E D E S I G N S

A soft-spoken individual, our Interior Design student from Politeknik Brunei this month is a young man in his mid-20s who – in a humorous twist – shared that up until this moment, the most challenging studies-related obstacle encountered was put forward by a counterpart.

Allow me to rewind. Mohammad Abdul Hafiz bin Salleh, who hails from a large family, is often complimented by his relatives regarding the quality of his works. This occurred frequently during the regular semester as well as during his internship.

“Jadi? Jadi?” (Is it happening? Is it happening?) is a light-hearted statement said out aloud often, usually by one of his uncles, in reference to Abdul Hafiz’s skillset as well as his immediate family’s interest in utilising their first-born’s talent for possibly renovating their home in the future. “My mum is especially supportive,” he says, pointing out that she shows a lot of interest in his various designs.

Performing his internship at Khalid Hj Sirat Architects exposed Abdul Hafiz to a variety of clients,

some with fairly interesting requests. “For one client I was asked to help plan for the expansion of the Salambigar Mosque. What was interesting was that one part of this expansion called for a Wudhu area that can be accessed by congregants who are wheelchair bound.”

BOTTOMAn original conceptual rendering of a bedroom created by Abdul Hafiz.

RIGHTAn original conceptual rendering of a dining room created by Abdul Hafiz.

All challenges aside, the toughest obstacle, “Was designing a residential interior for the parents of one of my fellow students.” An interesting assignment to be sure, students are assigned another student’s name at random. This is then followed by the students conducting consultations with their ‘random student client’ and their respective families.

“The family of the student I was assigned to are practitioners of Feng Shui.” This immediately provided Abdul Hafiz with a challenge as he had to strive to understand the details of a cultural concept not his own. “I do believe in the modern architectural principle that form follows function,” and tried to implement this into

the design. “So for example, my student client and her family love reading books. So whether I was designing the living room or a library for their cottage, I had to come up with innovative ideas for storing their books.”

Imparting some of his own style into his designs, Abdul Hafiz lists out his tastes from, using natural elements indoors to using partitions to delineate specific areas. Despite the appreciation for segregated areas, “I do like the Balinese approach to open concept designs also.” This level of flexibility will serve Abdul Hafiz well in the future.

Take for example this stunning residence that has earned a place in our hearts as ‘The Monochrome Home’. This two-storey house that was built on private land is the direct byproduct of the owners’ creativity and proactive attitudes, and took us by pleasant surprise.

We get to see some pret t y amazing homes, yes i t ’s tr ue. However, just when the BHC Magazine team acknowledges that the previous month’s home c annot be matched for uniqueness, st yle, or innovation, we are proven wrong yet again. Five years spent in the planning stage, the home would have to wait a further two more years for construction works to be completed. “That was two years ago now,” Hajah Ruby says with a smile. Along with her husband, Shari Haji Awang Besar, and their children, there is indeed quite a bit to smile about.

First and foremost, upon entering the home the one thing that everyone notices immediately is the staircase. Winding around itself in an angular manner, the staircase rises from the centre of the house. A unique feature indeed as its location acts a partition creating – within a basic square – four areas that are segregated while simultaneously occupying an open concept plan.

The central staircase presents ample opportunities to play with the space in such a creative manner because it can be treated as one living room that can be divided based on function. Two corners of the square have been utilised as seating areas with sofa sets and coffee tables for entertaining guests. Another corner has been turned into a dining area a glass topped table, classy décor, and a display cabinet. The fourth corner leads to a small corridor where a bathroom can be

found. This latter section was designed in a manner similar to what one might expect of a posh restaurant’s restroom. Coincidentally, at the time that statement was said out aloud (by yours truly), BHC Magazine’s lead photographer also said out “This reminds me of Pullman Hotel.” Comments which resulted in the homeowners beaming smiles and modest denials of “No lah, it’s not that fancy. It’s just our small home."

Going beyond the ‘basic square’, in between two of the corners at the western-most side of the house is an entranceway that leads to a more personal dining area with more décor and knick knacks. This is when the second most noticeable feature of the home becomes apparent. In a tribute to monochrome enthusiasts, this home comes close to mimicking the Scandinavian approach to interior design. With light brown tiles sourced from Nordin Jaya that blend well with its surroundings, and a few broad-leafed potted plants providing some vibrancy, “the only thing missing now is a lake”, Hajah Ruby jokes; and you know what? We completely agree!

Another interesting feature – and a subtle one at that – was the presence of ‘reverse symmetry’. For example, one of the smaller living spaces has three IKEA shelves drilled into the wall with black framed pictures of motivational, coffee, and funny quotes placed upon them. In the other corner’s living space can be found the exact same thing, but in white. The couches sourced from Thompsons Furniture also follow the same formula, with black couches in one corner, and white couches at the other.

LEFTA private and more secluded dining room towards the rear of the home provides a change of scenery when needed. It’s always great to have more than one option! BOTTOMWith the majority of furnishings sourced from IKEA, and Thompsons Furniture, the homeowners have meticulously selected an ideal range of furniture to match their theme.

BOTTOMThe homeowners’ love of monochromatic hues, combined with grey-brown floor tiles from Nordin Jaya Sdn Bhd, and vibrant colours in the form of potted greenery is a great example of the Scandinavian approach to interior design.

Reverse symmetry is even present in the ceiling with a set of square indentations leaning into the ceiling on one side of the staircase, while on the other there are indentations that stick outwards resulting in a unique design aesthetic. Now, while there are some who will marvel at this gorgeous residence, yet still say it needs extra colour and vibrancy, this design and colour scheme

aligns closely with my own personal taste. This home is perfect for snuggling under a blanket with a book and a cup of coffee during a heavy thunderstorm.

The only thing missing? I have to agree with this lovely couple. A lake. A word of warning though, if an artificial lake is ever created, I will definitely be visiting very often.

TOPReverse symmetry has been implemented successfully via a simple light-dark, and dark-light colour swap in different parts of the living room.

LEFTA tropical escape within a tropical country, Coco Café celebrated its first anniversary last month. RIGHTIn addition to a tasty menu, the décor around the premises, such as the ‘molecule lights’ succeed in drawing peoples’ gaze.

Imagine the BHC Magazine team’s surprise when we paid a visit to the Coco Café – a lovely tropical-themed venue that qualifies as one of the more popular ladies picks from locales of interest that have opened up over the past year – only to discover its culinary pursuits lean heavily toward the Paleo concept. With the owner Mr Tan, content to oversee the coffee aspect of the business, he has entrusted the running of the kitchen and services to one friendly and incredibly bubbly Ms Brenda in her capacity as the head chef.

Taking the time to educate us a little more, Chef Brenda explains, “Simply put, the Paleo diet is real food made from real ingredients. Everything is fresh and straight from the earth with no processing whatsoever.”

Taking a moment to ponder this, Brenda points out that most people want to live healthy but also want to live happily, and that is made a lot tougher when there are so many unhealthy yet tasty choices at our finger tips.

“Have you noticed that so many people are into fitness nowadays?” Chef Brenda says, before adding that with the increase in gym-goers and joggers, people need more access to foods with little or no sugar, little or no fat and definitely no preservatives. “This is what I mean by it is straight from the Earth. Unaltered, just the way it is supposed to be.” When asked why this was a direction she wanted to take, the head chef responds, “Because everything here is always the same. Don’t you want something different?”

Going by the Instagram handle @Chef.Aoki, Chef Brenda (who loudly announced she loved food on an average of once every 15 minutes) began her commercial pursuits in the food and beverage industry as an e-vendor preparing lunch boxes for her online customer base. Two years later saw her roped into Coco Café and almost 1 year after that, completely at home delivering instructions to her team of 13 staff. Comprising Bruneian, Indonesian and Filipino nationals, it soon becomes

obvious that the team has good chemistry. A quick trip into the kitchen reveals a section

of wall with large white tiles, and within the boundary of each individual square are written messages both encouraging and humourous. It brings to mind the ‘Learning Glass’ product that is so often popular with creative design agencies as a means to scribble ideas on a wall, such as during brainstorming sessions. This silent moment of appreciation comes to an abrupt end with

the sudden sound of impact. An assistant chef nearby has begun cutting and filleting fresh fish.

“We import our salmon fresh from Singapore,” Chef Brenda says, adding, “It is the only product that we bring in from overseas. Everything else is sourced within Brunei. It’s good timing that you chose to visit us today. Every Monday is when we receive our shipment.” Good timing indeed.

Capable of accommodating around 100 people at full capacity, being booked for private events such as birthdays, as well as offering catering services, this tropical themed café within the heart of a tropical nation was designed to be an escape for those dining in. A lengthy outdoor with a large projector screen was recently used for televised World Cup 2018 matches.

By the time this story is published, Coco Café will have celebrated its 1st year anniversary (August 18), some 3 weeks ago. One can’t help but wonder if patrons on this special day received an unexpected treat as part of this celebration. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

A creative designer. A businesswoman. A food lover. These were the basic ingredient s required for whipping up an order of one ‘Mei L aw ’, a dish so unique it inadver tently led to the founding of one of Br unei ’s classiest f ranchises – Bello.

Over the past 8 years beginning with the opening of its first branch in Seri QLap Mall, this local food and beverage franchise earned itself some renowned courtesy of its comfortable and dimly-lit lounge space. Its signature Swiss Mushroom Burger and Chocolate Lava Cake are items that set tongues wagging at such a rate that the natural fallout was the spread of praise via communal grapevines.

Fast forward to today, and the franchise has grown to include an eatery based at the Anggerek Desa Technology Park, followed by the latest offering on its company menu: Little Bello. Launched on August 4 and located on the first floor of the Gadong Mall, Little Bello is a complete departure from its earlier iterations. One is dark and dimly lit. Another adds dark earthy browns and grey hues, with abundant natural light flooding the larger interior for illumination.

45

The most recent however, is a bright affair with whites and cream as primary colours, at the front anyway. Occupying a right-angled floor plan, walking around the corner to the more private section immediately behind the kitchen reveals an area that has been furnished with darker hues and “feels more Bello-ish” according to the founder who sought a fine blend between aspects of the classical and modern. An example of this is the font, where the gold-hued ‘Little’ represents the modern aspect of the business, while “the large black cursive font of ‘Bello’ is more classical in appearance,” Mei Law says.

Variety is the spice of life and with a diverse array of furnishings sourced from Thompsons Furniture, Ashley and Hasmit, in addition to the items imported from Singapore and China, Mei Law has succeeded in

creating a tasteful floor plan.“I am really particular when it comes to everything

being in its proper place,” she says with a large smile, as she moves from table to chair to counter, re-orienting items of décor. “I have trouble focusing if something has not been done to its best or it just does not look right to me. I can’t leave projects half done, I need to see it through to the end. In a light moment of humour, Mei Law begins laughing as she supports her point with an example of one of her many ‘Eureka! Moments’. “It was around 3am and I was still working on a project when all of a sudden it occurred to me that Little Bello’s kitchen was on the wrong side of the space and needed to be shifted from the right side of the area to the left.” Talk about burning the midnight oil.

TOPSituated on the 1st Floor of the Gadong Mall, this eatery is a small yet classy spot for the ladies and their men.

46

Placement is important however, and interestingly enough, the Feng Shui concept has been exercised in Little Bello’s layout to some degree, affecting what goes where. Touching on this design principle from the East, “The entrance is the Southeast corner of the café and is considered as the money zone. Also associated with one of the five elements, in this case wood, this zone is an area of motion and activity. This is why I placed a large potted plant here, as well as some of the wooden décor” Supporting the energy of business activity, the largest

table on the premise is marble-topped circular table (the only one) and is ideal for round-table discussions.

With two friendly black-clad staff manning a café that can accommodate around 20 people, Little Bello is a place for all. “I wanted a European-styled design that also fused local elements. This is a place that youngsters can chill at while waiting for their movie showing at the cinema. This is also a place that uncles and aunties can relax at too,” Mei Law says, highlighting the importance of inclusivity to her brand, and how all are welcome.

When asked just how serious she is, the founder responds instantly, “Turning people into Bello-ers is what I do.”

There you have it, folks. So the next time you find yourself roaming the Gadong Mall, do stop by for a Jellofee ... or a Gula Melaka Scone ... or a Swiss Burger … or all of the above. Just be sure to throw your plates and cups away when you are done.

This raced through my mind when the BHC Magazine team arrived at Food Messenger, a Taiwanese eatery often mistaken for being a bridal shop courtesy of the pastel pink slathered all over the exterior and interior walls. Situated in one of the Gadong Central Business District’s older areas, Food Messenger is a single velvet rose among a garden of thorns. A beacon of colour, class and style within an otherwise rundown neighbourhood populated by numerous small car workshops; this eatery

is definitely an unexpected treasure.Driving along Jalan Gadong towards Menglait

The path eventually branches off and following the path left again takes you to a block of buildings, within which stands a unit so pink it would give a certain US singer with a claim to that name a good run for her money.

With floral arrangements suspended from the ceiling in a looping fashion, this eatery which is capable of accommodating around 30 people in a single sitting boasts a strong ‘girly vibe’. Popular with women whom fall under the early to late 20s demographic, there are also items on the menu that will also satisfy ‘manly men’. If you find this hard to believe, then you can’t go wrong with the beef noodles which comes in a strong meaty broth.

From humble beginnings as a food delivery service, Food Messenger just recently celebrated its first year anniversary on July 21. Co-owner, Joline Ho, answers the most important question of all – why pink? Bursting into a smile, Joline reveals how a good friend of hers from high school has a brother who specialises in interior design.

“Gavriel Ryan is responsible for all the décor you can see in here. He’s 23 years old and currently lives in

Taiwan. But before he left, he was heavily involved in Food Messenger,” the co-owner says before describing with a giggle the roundabout process of how they arrived where they are. “Pink was a pantone colour of the year when we first came up with the idea to do this and our designer just went with it. What was funny was that Gavriel did not think the menu suited the colour scheme at all, and we ended up changing the menu quite a bit to match the colour theme we had.”

LEFTA small space to be sure, there is still plenty of décor for customers to take photos of should they choose. RIGHTWith plans to begin screening movies once or twice a week, this locale is a good getaway for groups of girlfriends looking for something a little different.

So after 3 months of extensive planning, renovation works were carried out in their unit and just after 1 week, it was good to go. “It is not just the colour. The flowers, the lights, mirrors, everything was Gavriel and for that we are grateful,” Joline says. Lifting one’s head upwards reveals a few things of interest. A traditional wooden piece of handicraft suspended from the ceiling, with the open mouth facing the entrance and full of one-dollar notes is a testament to the Feng Shui practice of welcoming prosperity: “Money goes in, money does not go out.”

Offering catering services as well as renting out their space for private events are other methods for boosting overall revenue and staying relevant in

a competitive industry. “Just 2 weeks ago, we hosted a private birthday dinner for a family,” says co-owner, Evelyn Ting, who added, “The limitation of our space inside can be overcome. In this case we set up a tent outside enabling us to host the 70 people involved in the celebration.”

To enliven the atmosphere further, “We are planning to had movie nights once maybe twice a week. We hope to start this next week.” Do you know what that means Brunei? This means that as you are reading this story, Food Messenger will have commenced their show times. I wonder if customers can choose in advance what is screened.

FIN A N CI A L A DV I CE

Women nowadays have many hats to wear for their roles in life, juggling responsibilities as a mother, daughter and wife as well as with their career. With women being so busy, there are often times that the tendency to neglect personal financial matters is high as they tend to put other people’s needs like those of their family before theirs.

WITH STANDARD CHARTERED BANK

WOMEN& MONEY

While the financial tips and reminders are targeted at women, they are actually in fact applicable to either gender taking care of course to understand they key points.

Women tend to live longer than men. Hence the main concern is building a retirement fund that will realistically see you through your golden years. The other concern is that women also tend to be compulsive shoppers and the virtue of discipline needs to be called for.

START PLANNING EARLYLike the local Malay phrase – “Sikit sikit, jadi bukit” – the saying generally means that little by little it will grow. The same goes to your retirement fund, and the earlier you start, the bigger the “mountain”.

DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF ASSUMING that your husband’s life insurance (if you are married) will help to compensate should an unfortunate incident happen. Neither should you assume that your children will be financially stable enough to support you should you have children and they are of age. While of course it’s a rosy and hopeful means to an end, it may just not happen. Even if you are very sure that you will be well taken care of, having the extra money or income could be a bonus for you or a means of handling any emergencies that you or your children may face. The only person who knows how to take care of you is yourself!

INCREASE YOUR MONTHLY CONTRIBUTION

to the government retirement scheme. Check with Tabung Amanah Pekerja if you can increase your personal contribution from its current percentage. Tabung Amanah Pekerja has attractive interest rates on its investments. It is also important to realize that your employer is also contributing an equivalent amount to your contribution of 5% - nobody is going to add give you an extra 5% completely free for your retirement fund. If you are given the option of signing up for TAP or not to, do not turn the contribution down. This is like turning down free money.

EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT INVESTMENT STRATEGIES.You don’t have to be a genius to figure out basic fixed deposits or buying foreign currency. Any good bank will have financial consultants available to provide you with advice on what you can start on first depending on your risk appetite and how many years you have left to retirement. Take advantage of facilities that make it convenient for you to put aside money to start a unit trust investment such as standing instructions where a set amount is deducted from your account or salary on fixed dates hence putting off procrastination or forgetfulness on your part. While you are working hard for your money, you should also make your money work hard for you.

MANAGE YOUR SPENDING.Many times, the temptation to adorn and surround ourselves with pretty things gets the better of us and we give in. Of course nobody likes to be told what they can spend their hard earned money on either.

This is where good judgment and performing a good balancing act should be fine tuned.

TREAT YOURSELF TO REALISTIC REWARDS.While we always think we deserve a new pair of shoes or a new handbag or jewellery, the question you should ask yourself is do you really need it? Can you keep hold off on these desirable items to a later date? And most importantly do you really have enough money to pay for such a treat? If you have a steady savings plan in place and have a good sized emergency fund set aside already and you do you have the spare cash to splurge on such a treat then perhaps you do deserve it because you have exercised a good sense of discipline to ensure that your basic financial needs are met. But if you don’t have these in place and are thinking of putting the purchase on a loan then most likely it is not a reasonable reward to give yourself.

THINK TWICEabout the desirable item that you want to buy. When walking into a shop or browsing online and finding something attractive, do not just get it up straight away. Instead, linger over the thought of purchasing it. Take a few days to think about it too. Sometimes having time to think about the purchase will make you realize that you may not actually like the item all that much and decide not to buy it. This could then save you some cupboard space and more importantly, some money.
