HistoryofJudoJudo, meaning “gentle way” is a contemporarymartial art founded in 1882 by Professor JigoroKano.Asaboy,Kanowasanundersized, slender, weak, and sickly child with one sickness after another.Against his doctor's advice, Kano decided to dosomething to improvehishealthandat thesametimelearnhowtodefendhimselfagainstbullies. It was during these times that Kano began acomprehensive and systematic study of variousforms of jujitsu. Around 1880 Kano startedrethinkingandmodifyingthejujitsutechniqueshehadlearned.Hesawthatbyremoving the ‘strengthbased’ techniquesand focusingon leverage, timingandpositioning a smaller person could overcome a bigger, stronger opponent. AsKanocombinedthebesttechniquesofvariousschoolsintoonesystemhecouldcreated aphysical educationprogram that embodiesbothmental andphysicalskill. In addition, he believed that the techniques could be practiced as acompetitivesportifthemoredangeroustechniqueswereomitted.So,in1882hemodifiedmanyofthetraditionalthrowsandremovedthefootandhandstrikesandintroduced,‘KanoJiujitsu’otherwiseknownas‘KodokanJudo’,totheworld.TherearethreecoreprinciplestoJudo:MutualwelfaremutualbenefitJudoisforeveryone.Themostimportantpersononthematisyourtrainingpartner.ThereforeweshouldpracticeinawaywhereweareallgrowingasJudoka.MaximumefficiencyminimumeffortEssentially“Techniqueovercomespower.”Beingabletothrowabiggerpersonthroughthecorrectuseofleverage,timingandpositioningiswhatweallaimtoachieve.AdaptabilityBothinJudoandinlifeweneedtobeabletoadapttowhatisthrownatus.ThisisanessentialpartofJudotraining,randoriandshiai..

GradingElementsAdherencetotheBGCCodeofConduct
A student’s adherence to the BGC Code of Conductwill be considered in theirgrading.Astudentwhocontinuouslydemonstratesan inabilitytodosowillbeadvisedaccordingly, andmaynotbeconsideredforgradinguntiltheirbehaviourisadjusted.
DemonstratedknowledgeofJudoexpectedoflevel
A studentmust be able to demonstrate knowledge of Judo that is expected oftheirlevel.Thisincludesbeingabletodemonstrateatechniqueuponrequest,aswellasduringlivesparring(asobservedbythecoachesduringclasses).SafeexecutionofJudotechniques
Safe execution of Judo techniques is crucial to keeping an injury–free trainingenvironment.AstudentmustbeabletodemonstratetheirabilitytoexecuteJudotechniquessafely,withoutapotentialtocauseinjurytothemselvesandothers.
Tachiwaza
Throwsandtakedowns(nagewaza)
Students will still be required to demonstrate a number of throws andtakedownsinbothstaticandmovingscenarios.Thesethrowswillbetakenfromthefirst40throwsofthegokyo.Videoofthesearepostedontheclubwebsite.
Inaddition to staticandmoving techniques studentsmaybeasked toperformcounters(kaeshiwaza)andcombinations(renrakuwaza)aswell.
Newaza
Pinningpositions(osaekomiwaza)Pinning and holding positions are two of the key elements of effective Judo.Students must be able to explain and demonstrate a number of pinningtechniquesexpectedoftheirlevel.Thisincludesvariationsofyokoshihogatame, kesagatame, tate shihogatameetc.Asgradingadvances, studentswillneed todemonstrate their ability to move from one holding technique to anotherwithoutthereleaseofpressurefromtheopponent.
Escapes(nogarekata)
Escapingvariousgrapplingholds frombothgroundandstandingpositions isaveryimportantelementofeffectiveJudoandself-defence.Studentsmustbeabletodemonstrateanumberofescapesfromvariousholdsandpins.Thisincludesescapingyokoshihogatame,tateshihogatame,kesagatameetc

Strangles&Chokingtechniques(shimewaza)
Depending on the students age they may be asked to demonstrate anunderstandingofbothchokingandstrangulationtechniques.Studentswillneedto show control when applying these techniques from positions such as backcontrol,tateshihogatameandguard.Additionally,studentswillneedtobeabletorecogniseanunconsciousopponentandwhattodointhissituation(thisisapossibility,althoughveryunlikelyifpropertrainingetiquetteispractised).Jointlockingtechniques(kansetsuwaza)
Dependingonthestudent’sagetheymaybeaskedtodemonstrateanumberofJointlockingtechniquesexpectedoftheirlevel.Theseincludearmbarsandfromvariouspositionssuchasturtle,yokoshihogatamegatameandbackcontrol.
TappingoutThemostimportantthingtodemonstrate,beforeanysubmissionortakedown,isastudent’sability toeffectively ‘tapout’.Tappingout isvery importantandallstudentsmustdemonstratetheirabilitytotapoutoncetheyhavebeenplacedinsubmissionstheycannotescape.
Tappingoutsafelyincludesusingvariouswaystoletourtrainingpartnersknowwe’vehadenough.Thisincludesverballysaying‘tap’,andphysicallytappingouropponentsandthemats,usingbothhandsandfeet.
Randori(Sparringability)and‘flowing’Inadditiontotechnicalproficiencyintachiwazaandnewaza, theabilitytosparsafely and effectivelymust be demonstrated. Judo is amartial art, sport and aself–defence strategy, and therefore the ability to execute techniques in liverandoriisagreatdemonstrationofastudent’sabilitylevel.
Equallyimportantistheabilityto ‘flow’withatrainingpartner, especiallywithsomeone that is at a lower level or has lesser bodyweight. This is a greatdemonstrationoftechnicalproficiencyandwillbeconsideredingrading.
Nagenokata
As students reach the blue belt and above they will need to learn anddemonstrate a number of sets of the nage no kata. This traditional kata is anoverviewofthefundamentalaspectofJudo.
