STEM THAMES WATERYear 7 students took part in a STEM day organised by Thames Water. After a short introduction to the principles of building a clean water supply, the boys worked in teams to build their own water network around a model town. The aim was to ensure the hospital, school, businesses and houses across the map could be supplied with water. The boys came up with a number of different solutions and enjoyed the challenge.

STEM FARADAY CHALLENGEWell done to the team from 8SW who won the Faraday Challenge Day and will represent the college at the Jack Petchey London Final day. The boys developed and built a prototype humidity detector for the James Webb telescope. They accumulated more points over the day than the other teams taking part as judged by the workshop facilitator from the Institution of Engineering and Technology. There were plenty of good ideas from the other teams including a motorised arm to clean up the dust from the reflective surfaces of NASA’s Space Telescope.

12 LINK WORKSHOPSIn the first autumn half-term Year 12 Foundation students have been taking part in 12 Link workshops organised by Ms Muir and BEST. These workshops are aimed at preparing the students for their work experience placements which will run one day a week from November 2018 until February 2019.Gideon 12CJW : “For the past five weeks I have been involved in the 12 Link workshops organised by Ms Muir & BEST. These workshops are gearing us for our work experience placement in November 2018 until February 2019. I am so happy as I have successfully gained a one day work experience placement at Waitrose, Balham. The workshops were run by different employers covering topics such as cover letters, CV writing, interview skills, apprenticeships, the construction industry, traineeships, employability skills, etc. I found the workshops extremely helpful and the employers were all ‘hands on’ - willing to assist me with any queries that I had, they even read my CV and cover letter - giving me valuable pointers in how to improve them. “

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCEWell done to all Green Ties who undertook a week’s Work Experience after half term. Mr Lee was extremely pleased to receive a number of good reports from students, parents and employers. Some of the students have been asked back and a couple have also managed to secure themselves Saturday jobs as a result.

JOB CENTRE PLUS TRIPTen students visited the Job Centre Plus in Kennington with Ms Muir and Ms Olasibekan.Abdullah 12LTT: “The trip was interesting because they taught how to find a job, the different departments that they have in the Universal Credit section of the DWP. The trip was useful because it helped me to understand the various ways one can find employment.”Darren 12LTT: “The trip was good as it taught me how to be more confident when looking at applying for work that I want to do and what the JCP entails. It was interesting to know about Universal Credit and it financially supports adults of all abilities. It was also helpful to know what other people did for their previous jobs such as our guest speaker Mr Johnson a senior civil servant who had advised policy makers at number 10 Downing Street.”

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGESThe MFL Department celebrated European Day of Languages in October. Year 7 were treated to a breakfast of pain au chocolate and a carton of juice by the MFL teachers and were encouraged to ‘order’ in French or Spanish. Well done to 8SW who won the tutor time quiz that the MFL department had organised. Another highlight of the day was students finding out what language other than English members of staff speak. The MFL department hopes this will inspire students to learn another language.
