Betty Yee Wins New Friends at the Brunch

Seventy plus DDC members attending the annual Champagne Brunch had the special treat of meeting a warm wonderful person, Betty Yee. Betty is presently

in a see–saw race for Sate Controller trading second place back and forth with fellow Democrat John Perez for the right to run against a Republican

in the November election. They are presently separated by a few hundred votes in our “top two open primary.” Here is the problem. Demo-crats had the opportunity to choose between two imminently qualified candidates and a third “D” against two Republicans. The third “D” had no statewide recognition but drew votes locally

in heavily populated and heavily Democratic LA County. At one moment in the vote count, there was the possibility that our splintered Democratic field would allow two R’s to emerge as the only primary

winners effectively denying Democrats any voice choice in November while prematurely quashing the prospects of two superb candidates. Much of Betty’s presentations concerned the unintended consequences of California’s top two open pri-mary system and the need to revisit this process.

Over and above both politics and process, Betty was among the first to arrive at the Brunch and the last to leave personally engaging every guest with her charm. Concerning policy, Betty singled out the problem of tax fairness, “We have slayed the dragon” referring to re-cent legislation making Amazon dot com finally pay tax-es like other California businesses. Our next Controller

will also sort through the complexities of tax laws concerning renew-able energy. Concerning politics, Betty reminded Davis Democrats that we are especially privileged to “have the luxury of being able to help other Democrats” in more contested races and districts. (continued p 3& 5)

Saturday, Aug. 16 2:00-8:00 pm, Yolo County Fair The Club hosts the County Party’s information booth-greeting the public, distributing information and registering voters. Volunteer for one or two hours having fun while celebrating Democracy; con-tact Rick 758-2331. Sunday, Sept. 7, 5:00-8:00 pm, Yolo County Democratic Bean Feed. Veterans Memorial Building, Davis. Speakers will include national and state leaders while en-joying a great BBQ . Sunday, Oct. 12, 4:00-8:00 pm, Hukilau Celebration (AKA a Hawaiian communi-ty celebration). Hosted by Stephen and Robin Souza at their home. Details TBA but plan on joining the fun.

DDC Celebrates July 4th in the Best Tradition

Many Club members took time from fam-ily and friends to celebrate July 4th in tru-est possible patriotic man-ner, support-ing the Demo-cratic platform and candi-dates. The

Club was joined by our Brady Bill friends, Susan Lovenburg, Naomi Williams, Terry Will Robert Canning, who support sensible gun control to secure guns from children and to perform background checks on ammunition purchases, SB 53 which now waits for the Governor’s signature to become law. A repre-sentative of the Garamendi campaign also helped as we distributed infor-mation sup-porting the Congress-man’s and Bill Dodd’s election. (continued p

(Brunch cont’d from p.1) The Brunch was hosted by Bill Julian and Kulakow at their home and primarily organized by DDC VP Rick Gonzales. The event was an outstanding success with plenty of food and R & R songs from the Sixties with familiar (even understandable!) lyrics. The audience enjoyed remarks by many local leaders, Don Saylor, Jim Provenza, Freddie Oakley, Lucas Frerichs and out-going Mayor Joe Krovoza, each reminding us of Democratic values and the reason that we volun-teer our efforts. As the finale, newly elected DDC President, Stephen Souza presented Arun with a photo mon-tage depicting his many years of service as DDC President. Among the photos are pictures of Arun with President Clinton and many national, state and local officials documenting the Club’s help (i.e. your help) in electing Democrats. However as a consolation, we are publishing a few extra large photos, in celebration of July 4th.
