A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR BILL
2
What is a Certified Lay Minister? A Certified Lay Minister (CLM) is a qualified United Methodist layperson called to congregational lead-ership as part of a ministry team under the supervision a clergyperson. A person wishing to become a CLM enters the certification process, which includes training, support, supervision, and accountability to the District Committee on Ordained Ministry. CLMs are laypeople serving out their call as disciples of Jesus Christ. They are neither full- nor part-time clergy but volunteers. Volunteers can serve as Lay Speakers, Lay Servants or Lay Leaders. Why do we have Certified Lay Ministers? They Enhance ministry in small-membership churches They Expand team ministry They recognize the importance of the ministry of the laity, linking back to early Methodism. What does a Certified Lay Minister do? Preaches the Word as a fill in when the pastor is gone. Provides care ministry – visitation, communion or prayer support. Assists in program leadership in worship. Serves as a witness to the community. If you are interested in becoming a CLM, pray to discern God's will in your life. Reflect on questions like these: Could God be calling you as a layperson to be a part of a ministry team using gifts given to you? Could you serve God faithfully as a CLM in the congregation in which you are currently a member or a nearby congregation in need of lay leadership? Are you willing to explore this form of leadership in The United Methodist Church? If you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, consider becoming a Certified Lay Minister and ex-perience what it is like to be faithfully alive to the possibilities of leading the mission and ministry of a church today as part of a ministry team. Talk with your pastor or district superintendent to explore the process. Complete the training. Dedicate yourself to this task. May God bless you as you make yourself available for this call! We are all called by God!

BETHEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH PASTORS
In remembrance
of Pastor Appreciation
Month.
Food For Thought
By Mandy McAlarney In 1787 a letter written from Thomas Jefferson to George Washington said “Agriculture is
our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals, and
happiness”. The fall harvest is upon us and we are abundantly blessed to call farmers our
friends and have the fruits of their labor on our tables daily. When you sit down at your din-
ner table tonight, enjoy a piece of my family’s favorite cornbread and thank the Lord for
farmers and your daily bread with our Lord’s prayer “Our Father who art in heaven; hal-
lowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread as we forgive those who trespass against us; lead us not into tempta-
tion, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever,
Amen”- The Lord’s Prayer

Friends are welcome as always, and dress prepared to move! Christmas Shoebox Packing – In early November (date TBA), our church will be packing shoe-boxes for children around the world. Throughout the past year, Bethel has been collecting toys, clothing, school supplies, and personal care items to pack into boxes for delivery near Christmas. You can even write a personal note and enclose a photo. It’s a great way to show Jesus’ love through action and giving. Please watch for the date and join the crew! Collecting Donations and Making Care Packages for Homeless Folk in Anderson - You will make a difference close to home when we pack donated items into food and personal care bun-dles during December (date TBA). Then, during your winter break, we will head out as a group to meet homeless folk where they are, (plenty of adults will be there) share hope and caring, and even learn from them. After all, we are all created by God and are precious to Him. Think about and plan on making time for this new challenge For more info contact Cindy Garver 765-620-0960 or [email protected] or use facebook messenger.
Remember, God loves you NO MATTER WHAT! We love you too.
No one should be
Homeless for the Holidays
Therefore, Bethel and our youth group will be providing some hope and much-needed items to
Anderson’s homeless folks, and you can help.
During the month of October, we will be accepting donations of personal care items : soap,
toothpaste, toothbrush, comb, brush, wet wipes, deodorant, shampoo, washcloths,
and mouthwash are needed for personal care kits.
During November, we will collect non-perishable food : tuna, sardines, crackers, snack
paks, dried fruit, canned items, hard candy, etc. What would you want to eat if you were
very hungry, cold, and had no stove, microwave, or place to store food?
During their winter break after Christmas, students will head out together with adults to meet
homeless folk where they are to listen, give, pray, and care in the name of Jesus. They will offer
them the choice of personal care kits or food bags, and something to keep warm such as gloves, hat,
or coat. Students will assemble the personal care kits and food bags. If you prefer to donate money,
it will be used to fill in the gaps. Checks can be placed in the offering plate with “homeless minis-
try” in the memo line. Even if you can simply donate a gently used coat (medium or large
only, please), hat, or blanket, it will be helpful. A collection bin for these items and those men-
tioned above will be in Fellowship Hall beginning in October.
As we all participate and give in small and large ways, our compassion and faith will grow. So too,
will the faith of our young people as they bring hope to those Jesus teaches us to help.
Thank you in advance for your generous participation in this new ministry effort. For more infor-
mation, contact Cindy at 620-0960.

THE TOUR
ON THE SOUTH LAWN OF OUR STATE CAPITOL BUILDING
OCTOBER 5, 2016 FROM 12PM– 1:00PM ARRIVE EARLY!
“America is at a crossroads, and I believe we should take every opportunity to stand up for
the things of God and His Word.” –Franklin Graham
Franklin Graham is traveling to all 50 states in 2016 to hold prayer rallies, to preach the Gospel,
and to challenge believers to take a stand and take action. He’ll be urging Christians to vote, to
live out their faith in every part of their lives, and to pray for our nation just as Nehemiah cried
out to God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore hope to His people.
FRANKLIN GRAHAM
Franklin Graham has devoted his life to meeting the needs of
people around the world and proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. The eldest son of Billy and Ruth Bell Graham, he serves
as President and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Gra-
ham Evangelistic Association. Under his leadership, Samaritan’s
Purse has met the needs of poor, sick, and suffering people in
more than 100 countries. As an evangelist for the Billy Graham
Evangelistic Association, he has led crusades around the world.
Decision America Tour will be held downtown Indianapolis on the steps of the State
Capitol Building on October 5, 2016. Contact Steve Hill for information about join-
ing Bethel Church’s crusaders along with other Christian around Madison County
and the State of Indiana!
“They will know we are Christian by our love, by our love”.
The North Indiana Emmaus Community exists to develop Christian leaders for the local church and the world. The approach seriously considers the model of Christ's servant hood and encourages Christ's disciples to act in ways appropriate to being "a servant of all."
The Gospel of Luke relates the story of Christ joining two friends on the road from Jerusa-lem to Emmaus, walking together and sharing their heart's deepest concerns. The risen Christ walks with them and explains the scriptures: how it was ordained that Christ should suffer and so enter his glory. The illuminating climax of this heart warming experience comes when Christ takes bread and blesses it, he then breaks it and gives it to them. At that moment, the eyes of the two are opened, they recognize him as the risen Christ, and they rush back to Jerusalem to tell the others. (Luke 24:13-35)
The above story provides the image for the Walk to Emmaus, an Upper Room program that calls forth and restores Christian discipleship. The Walk to Emmaus, a three day ex-perience, takes a New Testament look at Christianity as a lifestyle. The highly structured weekend is designed to strengthen and invigorate the faith of Christian people, and through them, their families, their congregations, and the world in which they live. Emmaus com-bines the efforts of laity and clergy to renew the church.
Please be in Prayer for those going on an Emmaus Walk
