Dear Bethany,
It’s quite amazing that we have arrived already on May 1st, 2018! Each of our lives and times seem to fly by so very quickly!! And soon, summertime will be upon us and we should make sure we are continuing to be involved in active ministry here at Bethany during this season. With VBS, Bethany Ladies’ Bible Study, Men’s Bible Studies and small groups, Sunday services, Missions and outreach opportunities, and so much more, you and I and our families will have plenty of areas where our involvement is both important and needed. While I know that children are mostly out of schools in the area for the summer and vacations may take some away for a time, there’s still time and opportunity to maximize many of these summer days for ministry purposes! Please carefully look over this newsletter for the kinds of ministry in which you could participate. Take full advantage of this season of service and ministry—a time which might not generally be afforded to you during the fall and spring. As you read about all these ongoing ministries and their various needs, ask the Lord to use you in the lives of others!
God Bless You,
Pastor Lance

Our Mission Hands of Mercy’s mission is to strengthen the Body of Christ by discipling families and individuals to love others in tangible ways. We help churches build loft houses in their parking lot and facilitate weekend and short-term, cross-cultural ministry opportunities. Hands of Mercy encourages all members of the family to serve together and has no age restrictions.
What is a loft house?
A loft house is prefabricated in church parking lots in the US and assembled in Mexico in a day. Though not luxurious by any definition, a loft house gives some basic protection and shelter from the elements. It is a 12-foot by 12-foot structure with 4 windows, a lockable door and a second-story attic loft for sleeping that is reached by an interior ladder. The kit-house consists of prefabbed panels made from simple building materials, widely available at most home improvement warehouses: 2x4s, 2x6s, plywood and tar paper roofing. The house has a raised wooden floor, covered with linoleum, built on concrete piers. This speeds construction by eliminating extra days to pour and cure a cement slab. Work teams can build loft houses on lots that would not be suitable for slab construction. For about $3,500, these homes exhibit a visible testimony to the love of Jesus to the new home owners and their entire community.

Spring Serve Day May 5
Sarah’s House Maternity Homes
Twenty volunteers are needed for Spring Serve Day on May 5, from 9:00 am to noon.
Sarah’s House transition home currently houses two women and their three children. Shortly after the Serve Day, a mother and her twins will join these two families at the transition home. We are excited about the opportunity to help “spruce up” this residence. A partial list of projects includes gardening, window washing, installing a small area of drywall, carpet cleaning, and replacing a ceiling fan. A signup sheet and additional information will be available at the Sarah’s House table before and after the morning service. We encourage you to join us for this work day in May!
Children’s Hunger Fund
Thank you for serving your local community and children around the world with a gospel-centered mercy ministry!
Each of the Food Paks prepared by Bethany Church and Christian School will provide an opportunity to build relationships and deliver the life-giving hope of the gospel to families in crisis.

Bethany Church on the Hill is looking forward to a visit from Paul and Margie Varberg on Sunday, May 6. At 9:00 am, combined Equipping Hour classes will hear the Varbergs share about their ministry in the Philippines. They will also give a brief presentation during Sunday service. After the morning service, the congregation will be given an opportunity to ask questions about their ministry.
Paul and Margie have been starting and leading ministries among the 2.6 million Waray people of the Philippines for the past 30 years.
They have successfully started the Tacloban Bible Community Church which now has 500 attending on Sundays. There are also 200 college students attending its Friday Youth Service. Paul also started a church-planting institute within the Tacloban Bible Community Church.
Paul is currently leading a team that is translating the Bible into Waray.
Another aspect of Paul’s ministry is Bethel International School where Paul continues to serve as the superintendent. Bethel International School is coming to the end of its 16
th year with 332 students.
Only one-fourth of these students have parents who are Believers. But because Bethel is a Christian school, all students learn the Bible and learn to pray. Because there are so few Believers amongst the Waray, it is very difficult to find enough qualified teachers each year who are committed Believers. Here are the teachers they need for next year:
- First Grade Teacher - Computer teacher
- High School English teacher - Coaches
- School Chaplain or Pastor - Librarian
- High School Math teacher
Jana Larson is from Fargo, North Dakota, and taught at Bethel for several years. She said, "The more I got involved at Bethel, throwing myself wholeheartedly into what I did at the school, and the more I got to know my students and love them, the more attached I felt to the school and all that it entailed. It grew to be my home away from home. I was surprised how I could be so very far away from my real home and
yet still feel so comfortable. The principal, staff and faculty (all strong Christians) were great to work with. We all worked very well together as a team.”
If you, or someone you know, might be interested in filling one of the vacancies at Bethel International School, contact Paul Varberg—(559) 909-3455, or [email protected]

Paul and Margie Varberg have been involved in ministry in the Philippines for 30 years.

Throughout Scripture, the Lord used fellowship groups to provide friendship, to care for needs, and to help people grow spiritually. Jesus selected twelve disciples to travel with Him and learn from Him. The early church met in both temple courts and in homes (Acts 2:46). The meetings in homes would have been smaller groups than the 300 who were a part of the church at the time. Fellowship groups still play a vital role in the health and growth of the church.
Cornerstone Fellowship
Cornerstone Fellowship helps
prepare young marrieds and
families to live godly lives. The
desire of this fellowship is to
magnify the worth of Christ through
the faithful studying and teaching
of His Word, and to encourage and
edify His people through loving
fellowship with one another.
Cornerstone has several small
group Bible studies in Thousand
Oaks that provide life-on-life
discipleship relationships, as our
members seek to apply biblical
principles in the context of
everyday life. For men,
Cornerstone offers a twice
monthly small group study and
men’s discipleship. Women’s
gatherings are once a month.
Cornerstone Fellowship gathers
once monthly for dinner and
devotions.
A two-month schedule of
Cornerstone’s activities is listed to
the right.
Fellowship Groups at Bethany
Faithbuilders are married and single
adults who meet together for
fellowship and edification in order to
be equipped to share the Gospel
with others throughout the
week. The group meets Sunday
Faithbuilders Fellowship mornings at 9:00 am in room 204
during Equipping Hour.
In April, Faithbuilders continues with

Who is an excellent wife? What is she like? Using the woman in Proverbs 31 as a model, trusted Christian counselor Martha Peace offers practical answers to questions most often asked by Christian wives. Come and be encouraged as we read and discuss The Excellent Wife, by Martha Peace.
The Women's Discipleship group meets the fourth Tuesday of the month in room 201. The next meeting is May 22. We will discuss Chapter 14: “God’s Provision.”
Women’s Book Club News
Women’s Discipleship
Our Bethany Women's Book Club meets quarterly to discuss an autobiography or biography of a great man or woman of faith. The next book selection is Bitesize Biographies: John Newton, by John Crotts.
John Newton is perhaps best known for his classic hymn, “Amazing Grace.” However, most people are not aware of his life journey behind that most famous hymn. John Crotts’ biography provides valuable insight of Newton’s gradual transformation from heathen sailor to evangelical leader and man of God. The book is divided into two main sections.
The first section chronicles Newton’s early life, seafaring days, transformation and ministry. The second part recounts Newton’s glorious hymns and touches upon his literary works. Newton’s story demonstrates how no one is ever too far from the mighty, providential hand of God. Clearly, God had a plan for this rebellious swashbuckler which He expertly wove to its completion.
The Book Club Brunch will be May 19 at 10:00 am in Rm. 201.
“That which should distinguish the suffering of believers from unbelievers is the confidence that our suffering is under the control of an all-powerful and all-loving God. Our suffering has meaning and purpose in God's eternal plan, and He brings or allows to come into our lives only that which is for His glory and our good.” ― Jerry Bridges, Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts
Can I trust God? In times of great difficulty when it seems like our world is falling apart, it often feels impossible to believe that an all-powerful and all-good God is in control. But just because we can’t see him at work, doesn’t mean he’s not.
During a time of adversity, Jerry Bridges began a thorough Bible study on God’s sovereignty. Trusting God shares the fruit of his study. Bridges reminds us that God is completely sovereign—over circumstances, nations, nature, and even people—infinitely wise, and supremely loving. Because these things are true, we can trust him fully as he works out all things for our good through his providence. In fact, it’s only because he is sovereign that we can trust him at all! Join us as we read and discuss this very good news! Be encouraged to cultivate a spirit of gratitude and a desire to look for where God is working in all your circumstances. You’ll find yourself trusting him more completely—even when life hurts.
This 7-week study begins June 18 and meets Monday evenings at 7:00 pm in room 201 or Thursday mornings at 10:00 am in room 204.
Register on Sundays at church or online at the women’s ministry page on Bethany’s website.

MEN'S BREAKFAST MAY 19TH 8:30 A.M.
Our guest speaker is Chris Bruynzeel. Please circle this date on your calendar and invite a friend!
May’s Scripture reference is Philippians 4:4-7. My challenge this month is to memorize these verses. They are great words to wake up to every morning! “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4-7, ESV). Men of Bethany, remember Bethany was where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. May we pray for the power of the resurrection in our men's lives and that we would be an encouragement to each other as men in Christ! May we grow in daily knowledge of the Holy Scriptures and fervently pray for our church and our nation.
Not too long ago, I asked Pastor Lance if he might have a reading list of his favorite books for Christian men. I have begun to read books from his phenomenal list and in May, I am recommending Arthur W. Pink's book, The Attributes of God*. Pink describes 17 powerful attributes of God. Have you paused from the busy pace of life to contemplate the magnanimous qualities of God? I challenge myself and each man in our congregation to ponder and discover God's qualities! "Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee" (Job 22:2, KJV). “Thus saith the LORD, ‘Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercises lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight,’ saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:23-24, KJV).
Pink continues to emphasize that a spiritual and savory knowledge of God is the greatest need of every human creature. Pink believed that the foundation of all true knowledge of God must be a clear apprehension of His perfection as revealed in Holy Scripture. "Something more than a theoretical knowledge of God is needed by us. God is only truly known in the soul as we yield ourselves to Him,
submit to His authority, and regulate all the details of our lives by His holy precepts and commandments. ‘Then shall we know, if we follow on [in the path of obedience] to know the Lord.’ (Hosea 6:3). ‘If any man will do His will, he shall know’ (John 7:17),”
(Pink, Attributes of God, “Preface”).
In contemplation of God, Pink writes:
"Yet, when thinking of the absolute dominion of God over all, we ought never to lose sight of His moral perfections. God is just and good, and ever does that which is right. Nevertheless, He exercises His sovereignty according to His own imperial and righteous pleasure. He assigns each creature his place as seemeth good in His own sight. He orders the varied circumstances of each according to His own counsels. He molds each vessel according to His own uninfluenced determination. He has mercy on whom He will, and whom He will He hardens. Wherever we are, His eye is upon us. Whoever we are, our life and everything is held at His disposal. To the Christian, He is a tender Father; to the rebellious sinner He will yet be a consuming fire. “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen (1 Tim 1:17),” (Pink, Attributes of God, “Chapter 19”).
When was the last time you considered God's sovereignty and dominion over all things? Have you read the Holy Scriptures lately about:
The Love of God...
The Mercy of God...
The Grace of God...
The Patience of God...
The Faithfulness of God...
The Power of God...
The Holiness of God...
The Immutability of God...
The Supremacy of God...
The Foreknowledge of God...
The Knowledge of God...
The Decrees of God...
The Solitariness of God?
Men of Bethany, I urge you to keep growing in your infinite journey toward Christlikeness! May you be blessed by Arthur W. Pink’s book as you commune with our Holy God! Amen

MINISTRY NEWS & NOTES Thank you to all who
helped make our One-
Eighty Fundamentals
of Biblical Counseling
training course a
success! Your ministry
—through hospitality,
greeting, tech, set up/
tear down, clean-up—was so helpful and
appreciated, and your gracious efforts made the
many non-Bethany attenders feel welcomed and
right at home throughout the entire conference.
Now that our One-Eighty discipleship/counseling
training has ended, for further training, you may
want to consider attending the upcoming ACBC
annual conference entitled, Light in the
Darkness: Biblical Counseling and Abuse, which
will be held October 1st-3
rd in Fort Worth, Texas.
Focusing on the problem of abuse, the 2018
annual conference will show how the resources
of Scripture equip Christians to counsel abused
persons and those who have harmed them. In
addition to the main conference, ACBC also
offers a pre-conference. This year’s pre-
conference is: A Counseling Exposition of 1
John: God is Light.
These conferences provide a tremendous
opportunity for discipleship training. Over 50
presenters are scheduled to speak at this year’s
conference, including Dr. Stuart Scott, Dr. John
Street, and our very own Pastor Lance. For more
info and to register, visit the ACBC conference
registration page at:
https://biblicalcounseling.com/conference/abuse/
We hope to see you there!

Did you know that our
Fundamentals of the
Faith Class is always
open to visitors? FOF
is a class designed to
give all believers, new
and mature, a solid
foundation to their
faith. FOF is also a
unique opportunity to
invite non-Christian
friends, those who might want an introduction to
the Gospel and the Christian Faith. The lessons
covered include essentials such as the Bible,
God, Christ, Salvation, Prayer, and Worship.
Because each lesson can stand on its own, is
interactive, and is in a small group setting, it is
an excellent option for Sunday morning
equipping. Drop by or invite a friend!
Fundamentals of the Faith meets Sunday
mornings in the Library at 9 am.

A Ministry of Encouragement
"For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you," The Apostle Paul to Philemon - Philemon 1:7.
So many are faithfully interceding for Beth in prayer. Knowing the Father is being appealed to by His people on her behalf is an incredible encouragement to Beth's heart!
A New Ministry of Encouragement
Another great encouragement we can give Beth parallels faithful, intercessory prayer. It is the fellowship's direct encouragement to Beth through notes reflecting upon how her life, ministry, testimony, love and influence have shown us Christ and ministered to our hearts (1 Thess. 5:11, Proverbs 16:24, Proverbs 18:4). We will begin this type of encouragement for Beth so she will know how God has used her to bless you, me, and a host of others around the country.
A Special Email Address
If you would like to write a note to Beth expressing your love for her, testifying of her devotion to the Savior that blesses all those around her, and for her ministry in your life and in the life of our church, we have a special email for this purpose: [email protected]
As she is able, Beth will read the emails and we trust God that her heart will be refreshed by the words of His people and the testimony of God's grace seen in her life and ministry.
Special Notes
Lance will continue providing updates about Beth's treatments and prayer requests via Facebook and the church website. Because many letters may be received, Beth may not be able to respond to each. Pray that every letter will be a fountain of joy to Beth and ultimately bring Jesus Christ worship and glory.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to Jim Hines: (805) 320-1780 or [email protected].

Bethany Church has accumulated many tablecloths over the years—more than we’ll probably ever use! Right now, we have a number of oval and rectangular tablecloths we have no need of. Can you use them? Contact Andrea Graves, (805) 279-2481, or the church office and make arrangements to peruse the assortment of tablecloths.
Joni & Friends is looking for host families to house those coming to their Christian Institute on Disability in Agoura Hills for education and training. More information about this program is on the next page. Questions? Contact Kimi Archer:
