A Letter from our President, Rachel Berkal As a chapter, Beta Eta has had one heck of a year—from the District Leadership Conference to Grand Convention—we have been very busy! We started off the year with the annual District Leadership Conference. Since DLC was held in Ann Arbor, we hosted a dinner party for all the members of the District IV team to welcome them to Michigan and kick off the conference. We were lucky enough to welcome Claire Brown Gwaltney, the International President at the time, into our home for dinner, as she was the Grand Council member assigned to District IV for DLC. At the conference, Beta Eta received awards of excellence in many areas including, membership education, recruitment, and scholarship, just to name a few. During the summer I had the privilege of attending the 2011 “Diamonds in the Desert” Grand Convention with three of my fellow Executive Board members and several Beta Eta alumnae. As this year marked the 160 th Anniversary Convention, the weekend was a truly memorable experience. We met hundreds of alumnae and fellow sisters and experienced Alpha Delta Pi on a whole new level. But what made this convention especially exciting for Beta Eta was our eligibility to win the Golden Lion. As a chapter, we worked tirelessly throughout the year to produce an amazing Awards Packet. At Convention, we anxiously awaited the final dinner banquet when the Golden Lion would be awarded to the deserving chapters. Once the awards banquet was finally upon us, we were hardly able to eat and nervously sat through the awards ceremony. Finally Mrs. Gwaltney stood up at the podium to announce the Golden Lion chapters. “Beta Eta” was the first name she announced! DuringthesummerIhadtheprivilegeofattendingthe2011“DiamondsintheDesert”GrandConventionwiththreeofmyfellowExecutiveBoardmembersandseveralBetaEtaalumnae.Asthisyearmarkedthe160thAnniversaryConvention,theweekendwasatrulymemorableexperience.WemethundredsofalumnaeandfellowsistersandexperiencedAlphaDeltaPionawholenewlevel.ButwhatmadethisconventionespeciallyexcitingforBetaEtawasoureligibilitytowintheGoldenLion.

Asachapter,weworkedtirelesslythroughouttheyeartoproduceanamazingAwardsPacket.AtConvention,weanxiouslyawaitedthefinaldinnerbanquetwhentheGoldenLionwouldbeawardedto

thedeservingchapters.Oncetheawardsbanquetwasfinallyuponus,wewerehardlyabletoeatandnervouslysatthroughtheawardsceremony.FinallyMrs.GwaltneystoodupatthepodiumtoannouncetheGoldenLionchapters.“BetaEta”wasthefirstnamesheannounced!Wewereecstaticand(continuedonpage4)

BetaEtahasbeendoinggreatphilanthropicworkthispastsemester,continuingonintothissemester!Lastsemester,theBetaEtachapterfundraisedalmost$15,000forthelocalAnnArborRonaldMcDonaldHouse.WeputonourannualMr.GreekWeekcompetitionfortheentireGreekCommunitytoparticipateinduringUniversityofMichigan's2011GreekWeek.Thefollowingmonth,inApril,weheldourLion'sShareChallengeevent,AlphaDeltaPicnic.Thiseventwasincrediblyfunandsuccessful!Wehadanall‐you‐caneatpicnic,servinghotdogs, hamburgers,veggieburgersandmore!WereceivedtonsofsupportfromtheGreekCommunity,andmanygirls' familiescametosupportaswell!(continuedonpage3)

TheHouseCorporation(ofwhichyouareamember)ownstheHouse,andtheBoardofDirectorsiselectedtomaintainthehouseandthepropertyofBetaEtaChapter.TheBoardmembersareMaryJoClark,LauraNapiewocki,BarbaraKunkel,BarbaraKehbein,CindyRoss,AnnClinger,AllysonParkerandthreecollegiatemembers‐theChapterPresident,theChapterVPofFinanceandtheChapterPropertyManager.Withoccupancyoverthelastseveralyearsatcapacity(68),theBoardhasbeenabletomanage,maintainandupdatetheproperty,insuringthatourwomenhaveagreatplacetoliveduringtheircollegiateyears.Thissummer,wereplacedallthewindowsanddoor‐wallsinthehouseexceptforthethirdfloor.Weareexpectingenergysavingsandofcourse,morecomfortableroomsforourmembers.Wealsoinstalledacompositefencearoundtheparkinglot,whichprovidesamoresecurearea.Afutureimprovementprojectwillbetorenovatethekitchen.Also,duringtheADPiConventionin

Recruitment2011!

ALetterfromourRecruitmentVicePresident

DearAlumnae,

TheBetaEtachapterofAlphaDeltaPihadafabulousrecruitmentthisyear!Weworkedlongandhard,throughtheheatofwelcomeweekandthelatenightsduringthefirstfewweeksofclasses,butitwasallworthitbecausewenowhave57wonderfulnewAlphamembers!

RecruitmentbeganonSeptember11,thedayafterouramazingwinoverNotreDameatthefirstnightgametoevertakeplaceatMichiganStadium.ThiswasgreatfortheBetaEtachapterbecausethisyear’snewfirstsetthemewas“FootballSaturdaywithAlphaDeltaPi.”TheentirehousewasdecoratedinmaizeandblueandforasnackwehadpopcornmixedwithblueM&M’s.WeusedtheactualpopcornfromMichiganstadium.Delicious!

ThesecondsetthemewasAlphaDeltaPicnic.Theentirechapterworedifferentcolorsundressesandwedgesandals.Thepotentialnewmemberssippedonlemonadeastheywentonhousetoursandsawsocialandfinancialpresentations.

PreferencePartieswentverysmoothly.Weserveddiamondshapedcheesecakeandeverywomaninourchaptermadeascrapbookthattheyshowedtothepotentialnewmembers.Thepreferenceceremonywasverytouching.TearswereshedasthewomenofourchaptersharedtheirloveforeachotherandAlphaDeltaPi.

WhenBidDayrolledaroundeveryoneinthehousewasexcited.Ourmembersliterallyjumpedinthe(continuedonpage4)

PhilanthropyUpdate,continued…Thissemester,afteraverysuccessful2011recruitment,wehavebeenworkinghardtointroduceournewAlphastoADPiphilanthropy!WearecookingdinnerattheRonaldMcDonaldHouseeverymonthandhaveseveralupcomingevents.Weareco‐hostingacharitybeachvolleyballtournamentwithAlphaDeltaPhiFraternity,AlphaDeltasPIke:ServiceintheSand.Wealreadyhavetonsofinvolvementfrommembersofthecommunityforthisevent,andweareveryexcitedforit!WearealsoworkingwithChiPhiFraternitytofundraiseforHabitatforHumanity,sowecangovolunteerwiththemlaterinthesemester.WelookforwardtoallofourupcomingeventsandthefutureofourphilanthropicprogramhereatBetaEta!
