Madama Butterfly, a “Japanese tragedy”Acclaimed stage director Giorgio
Ferrara in collaboration withPalermo’s Teatro Massimo, brings abeautiful new staging of MadamaButterfly to Rome. The story of aJapanese geisha’s love for an Americannaval officer moved Puccini to composemusic of rare and sensual beauty, andalso of heartrending power, as the heroi-ne’s tragedy moves towards its devasta-ting conclusion. Pinchas Steinberg con-ducts this ravishing score, which featu-res such wonderfully lyrical passages asCio-Cio-San’s first entrance, her seduc-tion by Pinkerton, the famous‘Humming Chorus’ and of course Cio-Cio-San’s aria ‘Un bel dì vedremo’. Starsoprano Daniela Dessì (alternating withElena Popovskaya) sings the role of the ill-fated Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly).Alexey Dolgov makes a dashing Pinkerton – the character whose thou-ghtless toying with love is the catalyst for this tragic tale.
