Organization:

• State the purpose clearly.• Speak with purpose/bring motto in words for

effective speaking.• Aim/objective of discourse

Listeners’ needs

1. Make points/goal clear from beginning to understand your purpose, e.g., "I'd like to discuss….”.

2. Give clear signposts to follow what is being discussed/presented, e.g., “I am going to” or “Let’s compare..”.


Fluency and cohesion:

1. Pronounce words and expression with intellect using appropriate stress, intonation and articulation to words endings.

2. Link ideas appropriately to produce flow of connected disclosure, e.g., “so”, “because”, “then”.


Control of language:

1. Ensure the range of vocabulary and choice of words appropriately conveying intended meaning, e.g., “concerned” rather then “upset”

• Try to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context. Listen for the “direction” words which will help you interpret the question accurately.


Do not pause for too long when you answer the question You hear a short question and then the recording status box will change to recording. Start your answer as soon as this happens. If you wait for more than 3 seconds, recording will stop and the item status will change to ‘completed’, which means that you have lost your chance to give your answer.

Do not try to give a long answer The instructions for this item type tell you how to answer

the question. There is no point in saying more than you need to say. Marks are awarded for a short, accurate answer. There are no extra marks for additional words.
