Mothers' Union

The largest association of Christian women in the world. 4.1 million members in

81 countries.

Berriew Branch

As our speakers were unable, due to illness, to attend our April meeting, Lillian (Mrs.

Lillian Dawson) entertained us with stories of her ancestors, which was very

interesting and amusing. Thank you Lillian for stepping in at the last minute.

Wednesday June 25th we have our annual outing, this year visiting Meifod Church,

where we will meet Rev. Jayne and members of their Mothers' Union. We will have a

talk on the history of the church and of course afternoon tea.

Please meet at the Old School 2pm.

Thank you.

Berriew W.I. May Meeting

After our usual welcome from President Sue Usmar we had a short business

meeting to discuss the summer happenings in W.I. These include walks to the

source of the Severn and to Cefn Coch, coach trips to Chester races and a day

shopping and sports events.

Sue thanked everyone who had entered the W.I. Show for their hard work and

especially to Lillian Dawson who had collated the entries. Congratulations went

to the prize winners, Lesley who had 1st 2nd and 3rd, Lillian who had 2nd, Ferol

who had 1st and Jill S. who had a near perfect score.

The speaker for the evening was our old friend Alwyn Hughes whose talk was

entitled ‘Nature on the doorstep’ .With the help of slides he gave a lively and

interesting talk about birds commonly found in our gardens. Everyone enjoyed

his many anecdotes and he was thanked by Lillian. Jill Sadler produced an

interesting quiz about trees and this was won by Ann Markwick with Sue Usmar

2nd and Sue Minikin 3rd.

Tea and biscuits were provided and served by both Anns. The raffle was won

by Iris.

Next month, Wednesday June 4th, we have an afternoon outing. This will be a

guided tour of Powis Castle gardens and afterwards a special cream tea. We

meet at the Castle at 2 o’clock. On Wednesday 2ndof July we return to the

Community Centre when the speaker is Andy Cawchray who has ‘Chickens in the

garden’ Do come along and join our group.

Reminiscences by Mrs. Helme – May issue of the Newsletter

The following article has been received in response to the above by Mrs. Elene

Cadwallader – Mrs. Helme's daughter:

I was very pleased to see the article on Berriew in the 1890's written by Mrs. Helme,

my mother. You were right in that she was about 90 when she wrote it, encouraged by

my sister Dr. Vivien Helme.

She was born in 1886 and died in 1982 aged 96. She lived in Newtown but spent

many happy times with friends and relatives in Berriew during her youth. Married to

Matthew Helme in 1914, he became headmaster of Montgomery school after the war.

She was also a teacher, but married women were not employed by Montgomeryshire

Education Authority at that time.

I moved to Berriew in 2000 and have lived in the village very happily. I previously

lived for many years with my husband Frank and family at Llwynderw Hall, Belan.

I enclose four pictures: one of my mother as a child at the age when she would have

been visiting Berriew, and another shortly before she wrote the article aged 90.

Her mother was one of four sisters, and another photograph is of two Phillips sisters,

the eldest one being Lavinia who became housekeeper at Rhiewport. The final

photograph is another sister Jane Phillips who married Ted Evans of the Lion.

My Mother would have been delighted that I live in a house with garden sloping to

the River Rhiew where my grandchildren and great grandchildren paddle in the

summer. Elene

Cadwallader.

The Tom Cat Spot

So June is upon us and now the weather warms up further (we hope).

I actually went to Charlies last Sunday and was rather amused at grown adults

fighting over trays of bedding plants. I thought come back Blakemores, where

Graham and Rena had a well stocked supply of plants and the time to tell you about

them. Invaluable!!

Well – the bus driving, coalman who delivered sheep and newspapers was George

Douglass. Good old George.

Deputy Dog an old 1960's/70's/80's cartoon character is this months puzzler. He has

overlooked the village for many years and has only moved once since his creation,

but where is he?

Until next month – keep smiling.
