Bentley 360 moves to the next stage with demolition of Brownlie Towers starting in April

Constructed in 1969, the Towers were described as a revolutionary change in housing developments.

Consisting of two towers containing 300 social housing units, the development was the largest and most significant the Department of Housing had ever completed at that time.

However, the development did not always live up to expectations and over time experienced some issues including antisocial behaviour.

With the demolition of Brownlie Towers now underway, a new era of housing in Bentley has begun!

The removal of artefacts from inside the fifty-year-old building has been completed, with both towers being carefully demolished section by section using large excavators.

The demolition of the towers is likely to be complete by this year which will then free up the land to be included in the overall Bentley 360 project that will create around 1500 new homes.

The construction of the new Northern Parklands also began in March which will provide a large temporary community park before future development works start in 2021/22. Did you know that the development of a temporary park of this size and scale is a first in Perth?

The parklands have been designed with the community in mind, with many of the design ideas coming from young people in the area, including local primary school students.

With areas for the whole community to use, the parklands will include an artist designed polescape area, ‘learn to ride’ cycle track, outdoor classroom, picnic area, parkour equipment, street games and a walking/running track.

We are also planning the Southern Parklands with more news coming later in the year, so watch this space!

Sill Park construction starting soon

Construction works will start soon on the upgrade of the existing Sill Park (located at Sill Street and Earl Street), transforming the tired-looking park into a fun and attractive space for the local community to enjoy.

The Sill Park upgrade has many exciting features such as a half basketball court, fitness equipment, a new playground with some nature play elements, a ping pong table and parkour. A special feature for this park will be the City’s first trial and installation of free public WiFi. Other essential improvements include new pathways, path lighting and garden beds with a mixture of local and native plant species to attract the native wildlife.

The Sill Park project is part of ‘Bentley Parkscapes’, a parks upgrade program that will provide the surrounding Bentley 360 project area with improved public open spaces for the whole community to enjoy.

The ‘Bentley Parkscapes’ program is funded by the Department of Communities in partnership with the City of Canning.

For more information on the construction dates, please visit www.yoursaycanning.com.au or contact the project’s Landscape Architect, Nanette Nguyen at [email protected]

Hillview Park Neighbourhood Hub

Hillview Park and the adjoining shopping centre have been classified as a neighbourhood hub in the City’s Local Planning Strategy 2017. Hillview Park (located on Hillview Terrace) also forms part of ‘Bentley Parkscapes’ program.

The City wants to create a fun, vibrant and functional space to encourage residents to use the park for recreation and community activities. A public consultation session was recently held and community input from this will help shape the concept plan. For more information please visit www.yoursaycanning.com.au/hillviewpark

If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact the project’s Landscape Architect, Nanette Nguyen at [email protected]

Artwork and other relics from Brownlie have been carefully collected from the Brownlie Towers for future use in the Bentley 360 project. Look out for them in the future development!
