On 1 May 2009, EU regulations for mate-rials and articles in direct contact withunpackaged food will change.
The regulations protect consumers fromthe harmful effects of eating food conta-minated by substances that might havemigrated from conveyor belts for example. As part of the EU 1935/2004 framework re-gulation, the new additional directives2007/72/EC and 2008/39/EC also apply, along with the previous 2002/72/EC direc-tive. A transition period till 1 March 2010has been granted.
An extensive range of Forbo Siegling foodtypes already complies with these new

Amendment to the EU 1935/2004 regulation
New EU certificate means more safety The EU 1935/2004framework regula-tion states that noconstituents may migrate intofood that are harmful tohealth, alter the compositionof the food in an unreasona-ble way, or cause significantchanges in the food (in termsof odour, taste, appearance, haptics etc.) The regulation isconstantly being updated –for example by additional di-rective 2007/19/EC on the mi-gration of phthalates(plasticizers) to food. additional directives. Therefore, all custo-mers will be able to obtain appropriate cer-tificates in time.
First of all, current EU certificates for eachand every raw material had to be obtained.Secondly, a special R&D project team usesadvanced testing and analytical equip-ment to examine the materials andchemicals in each belt type in order toacquire the certification required.

A new Siegling Transilon® belt type offersenhanced hygiene due to its innovativebelt design alone. And it also makes ad-ditional belt edge sealing totally unne-cessary.
The advantage of Fullseal lies in its fabricstructure. Thanks to the patent-protecteddesign, lengthways cuts will not sever ten-sion member warp threads, as long as thecut is made within specified widths (see thedotted line on the picture at the top right). This reliably prevents the fabric fraying atthe edges and no liquids can penetrate thebelt’s corpus. Therefore, additional beltedge sealing is superfluous.
The new type is a blue urethane belt, coated on both sides and with an NP pat-tern on the underside. It hardly stretches atall and is easy to clean. Further benefits: theurethane coating is exceptionally incisionresistant and has very good release proper-ties. The fabric design means belts can alsobe used in troughed conveyors with mini-mum reversing drum diameters of 40 mm.
The new belt has already proved itself inreal world conditions. When conveying un-packaged dairy food and in meat and poul-try production, the belt really shows itsstrengths. But in dough preparation andthe manufacture of snacks, the advantagesthis belt has to offer very much come to thefore.
The new conveyor belt is FDA and USDAcertified. Its full designation is E 4/H U8/U8NP/MT-NA blue FDA.
The benefit: a closed belt edge withoutadditional sealing. For further information and samples pleasecontact: [email protected]

The fabric structure is shown above: a length-ways cut (dotted line) is made between thegroups of warp threads. The design thereforeprevents the belt edge from fraying. A detailedview of the neat belt edge is shown below.

Applying letters and symbols to conveyorbelts by laser increases efficiency and safetyin the food industry.
The benefits of the laser method are obvious:lettering and symbols can be applied to thebelts permanently, precisely and hygienically. In contrast to traditional methods, no ink orfoil is applied that can migrate into the goodsconveyed. As a result, belts with these types ofmarkings are ideal for conveying unpackagedfood.
The opportunities for using the method arepractically unlimited. For example, laser mark-ings can increase positioning accuracy. Inautomated processes, the markings are cap-tured by optical sensors, so that goods are po-sitioned accurately and can be locatedprecisely at a later stage in the process. Whengoods are placed manually on the belt, lasermarkings are also a useful aid.
Of course information such as belt dimen-sions and manufacturing data can be appliedto help customers to re-order belts, or to
entails a thermal change to the surface of thebelt and only certain colours are physicallypossible. Where the size of the image/lettering is concerned, Forbo Siegling custo-mers can choose up to a format of 240 x240mm and the marking can be repeated asoften as required.
The benefit: permanent, efficient and hy-gienic belt marking. You can order an infor-mation sheet by stating ref. no. 123. Just sendan e-mail to: [email protected]

New laser marking enhances processes
More and more customers are opting forblue belts. These belts offer excellent con-trast to the products conveyed in the foodindustry, because blue virtually never oc-curs naturally in food.
Consequently, soiling is identified morequickly and clearly. Blue also reflects lessstrongly than white - which is kinder to youreyes, prevents fatigue and means better
working conditions. For optically-controlledsorting systems, such as those found in pack-aging sections, blue belts are an advantagebecause of the good contrast between theproduct and belt.
The benefit: a complete range of bluetypes (Siegling Transilon, Siegling Prolink) –the right solution for every application. Info:[email protected]
Belt in a strong contrasting colour
More than just a fashion: blue belts
A good contrast: blue does not occur naturallyin food .
facilitate compliance with statutory regula-tions. This method is also perfect for custo-mised belt branding – an especially inter-esting marketing issue for conveyor manu-facturers wanting to apply their logos perma-nently to belts.
Finally, laser lettering or symbols on the beltcan also help safety. Markings in strong con-trasting colours make a moving belt (withnothing on it) visible, therefore preventing ac-cidents. All shapes, symbols and fonts can beapplied, but colours are restricted. Lasering
The choice of markings offered is virtually unli-mited – an example: markings for positioningpieces of pastry in the bakery industry.

Vision belt
A new conveyor belt for scanner systems

In the packaging industry, vision-drivenrobot systems are on the advance. ForboSiegling has developed a new conveyorbelt especially for this segment.
In addition to automatically filling trays andboxes, vision-driven robot systems also carryout quality control. They check the size andshape of the products, or how brown theyare, inspect the position and shape of thedecorations, or spot damage. This onlyworks with incident light scanners. In thiscase, it is essential that the product standsout strongly from the belt, or in other wordsthat a good contrast between the product
and belt is created. The conveyor belt mustalso be light permeable, with little reflection,so that any factors interfering with the pro-cess are excluded. Forbo Siegling has deve-loped a special new belt type to make thepackaging process faster and more efficient.
A major manufacturer of packaging machi-nery in Switzerland has already successfullyused the new vision belt. The light perme-able belt type, E 10/H X0/U2 MT-HACCPtransparent FDA displays linear force/strainbehaviour and very good tracking proper-ties. An impregnation also helps the under-side of the belt to repel soiling – so it is an
excellent solution all around.
The benefit: dimensionallystable, good contrast, little re-flection. For more informatione-mail to: [email protected]
