Coach Blake Moilan said his team compet-ed well following a victory over DiamondHill-Jarvis last Tuesday. “The girls played great against YMLA,”Moilan said. “We have been able to put twodistrict wins together back to back before ourbye week and start of the second half of thedistrict schedule. This is a huge momentumburst for us, moving into some games we willneed to win.” Moilan said he had a number of stand outperformances in the game. “Amaria Cooper and Alecia Spells bothplayed well,” Moilan said. “Cooper scored 16points and Spells scored 10 points. SydneyBrown played really well in the post andadded eight points and several rebounds. Theentire varsity team got good minutes and allplayed well.” Moilan said he has a few objectives for thebye week. “It will allow us to give the team a coupleof days off as we get back to school,” Moilansaid. “Having played Dunbar once this year,we know that they are much improved fromlast season and have some good team speedand shoot the ball well. I do think we will beable to match up with them a little better thistime around.”

The Western Hills Cougar boys lost 59-37to the Young Men's Leadership Academy lastweek and will host Dunbar at 8 p.m. tomorrownight.

Over at Benbrook, the Lady Cats lost toEastern Hills by a score of 45-30 last week. Miah Overton led the team in scoring with16 points, while Kaylee Calland and TarynLongley added six a piece.

On the boys side, Benbrook lost a heart-breaker to Eastern Hills by a score of 56-54last week, but coach Blake Mendez said histeam struggled early on. “Eastern Hills was a tough one,” Mendezsaid. “They came out and hit us in the mouthearly. We didn’t play well in the first half atall. The second half was a whole differentgame. We executed well offensively and tookthe lead with under a minute left, but their kidsdid a great job maintaining their poise, andthey hit the game winner with about a secondleft.” Mendez said he had one especially strongeffort in the game. “James Earnest played great,” Mendezsaid. “We ran our offense through him and hemade the right decision every single time. Thekid is a beast down low.” Benbrook has Diamond Hill-Jarvis thisFriday, and Mendez said his team will need tomake sure to keep the Eagles off rhythm topick up a win. “I expect Diamond Hill to play well,”Mendez said. “They’re always a scrappy team. We’re going to have to not let them set thetone if we want to win.”

For 29 seasons as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landrywas the image of professionalism and sportsmanship. His determina-tion and leadership made the Cowboys one of the most famous andsuccessful teams in the nation. Landry was born in 1924 in Mission, Texas. Football was his pas-sion from a young age, leading his team to a perfect record during hissenior year in high school. He attended the University of Texas as anengineering major while playing for the Longhorns. After his brother was killed during World War II, Landry volun-teered for service in the U. S. Army Air Force. He flew 30 missions asa co-pilot on a B-17 bomber. Afterward, he finished his degree at UTand then earned a masters degree in industrial engineering from theUniversity of Houston. From 1950 to 1955, he played halfback for the New York Giants, making the All-Pro and Pro Bowl team in 1954. In the 1954 season,he also became defensive coordinator for the Giants, helping theGiants make the NFL Championship three times. In 1960, the new Dallas Cowboys hired Landry as their first headcoach. The team struggled in the first years, but made a major break-through in 1966, winning ten games and appearing in the NFLChampionship. The Cowboys won their division for the next sixstraight seasons. The Cowboys reached their peak under Landry in the 1970s. In1972, they won Super Bowl VI, walloping the Miami Dolphins. Theteam had a winning record each season of the decade and only failedto make the playoffs in 1974. Additionally, the team won the NFC Eastdivision seven times during the decade. In 1978, Landry led theCowboys to their second championship, defeating the Denver Broncosin Super Bowl XII.

The 1980s were not as successful, but the team went to the playoffsfive times and won the division twice. However, in his last three sea-sons as coach, the Cowboys finished with losing records for the season, the first since 1964. Team owner Bum Bright sold the team to JerryJones in 1989, and Jones immediately fired Landry. The move shockedCowboys fans, who rallied to Landry’s defense, to no avail. Due to thatsupport and years as a championship coach, in 1990, Landry wasinducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As famous as he became for his success as a coach, he was instantlyrecognizable for dressing up every game in a suit, tie, and fedora. Hismodesty, faith, and determination won throngs of admirers. Fordecades, he was an active member of Highland Park United MethodistChurch, even teaching Sunday School on Cowboys home game days. As coach, he developed a reputation for efficiency, preparation, andtraining. He was the first to use specialty coaches for speed and weighttraining and for examining opponents for strength and weaknesses inupcoming Cowboys games. In 29 seasons as coach, the Cowboys won their division thirteentimes and went to the Super Bowl five times. With 250 wins, Landryranks third on the NFL all-time list, behind Miami’s Don Shula andChicago’s George Halas. He was twice named NFL coach of the Year.In 1993, when he was inducted into the Ring of Honor along with allthe other team legends after leaving the Cowboys, an image of the hatwas placed next to his name. In his last years, he suffered leukemia. Landry died in February2000, revered by football fans across the world. Two Texas schoolsnamed their football stadiums in Landry’s honor as well as TomLandry Elementary School in Irving.
