Their World Was Upside Down: The TRIO team (ACES, Upward Bound programs) moved into itsnew digs last week. Surrounded by boxes and just a little chaos, from left: Maria Salcedo, studentworker, Adell Bynum, Counselor/Student Support Services, Patricia Reyes, ACES/Upward BoundSecretary, Khanh Hoang, ACES Counselor and Maria Jasso, Upward Bound Counselor. Orderwas restored within a few days. Their new home is in the Central Annex, otherwise known as the siteof the old CSU modulars. New temporary buildings have been lifted into position there and will alsohouse the Center for Training and Development, which plans to move this Friday. Security, the mailroom, and some classrooms occupy the remaining original modular buildings on site.

President's Games Are On Hiatus, But Lunch Will Be Served: Due to "the hectic

schedules of so many at this time of the year, the President's Games will take a hiatus forone year," according to a recent campus announcement. "There will be a stress free cook outfor all to enjoy Thursday, May 12 from 12 to 1 p.m. in Desert Ranchers Park. There will beno team competition as in previous years. Please plan to attend the cook out and catch up onthe latest news. The President will be in attendance to thank everyone for all their hard workand dedication this past year." Call Ext. 510 to RSVP.

ACES, Upward Bound Recognition Dinners: Plan now to attendthe annual ACESProgram end-of-the-year student recognition dinner on Thursday, May 12, at 6 p.m. at theHilb Student Center. COD will also hold an Upward Bound Program banquet on Thursday,May 26, at 6 p.m. at the Heritage Palms Country Club in Indio. According to programsecretary Patricia Reyes, "For ACES, we are celebrating those students who are graduating,transferring or both, and this year we have about 30 students finishing up. For UpwardBound, we are honoring outstanding students as well as celebrating those that are graduatingfrom high school and from the program. This year we have 11 students graduating and manymore receiving awards. "

Academic Senate Has Full Slate of Officers: Academic Senate President Chris Nelsonsaid there are now nominees for all vacant Senate positions, including President. DavidAcquistapace, Assistant Profession, Digital Design and Production, has been nominated forthe top faculty leadership spot. Carl Farmer, MESA Program Director, has been nominatedto chair the Faculty Development Committee. Nelson himself was nominated to fill the chairposition on the Educational Technology Committee.

Nelson said the Senate has also a nominee for adjunct representative to the Senate. "We areverifying that the candidate is willing to run," he said.

Acquistapace is currently Chair of Curriculum. According to Senate by-laws, when a chairsteps down the committee selects a person to serve out the rest of the term, Nelson said."This selection must be approved by the full Senate."

Nelson had previously expressed frustration that no nominations had been forthcoming forthe important faculty leadership positions by the March deadline.

Math/Science Lecture Will Explore String Theory, Elementary Particles: The Divisionof Math, Science and Social Science invite faculty, staff and students to a lecture by DougMacIntire, Associate Professor of Physics. His topic: What Is The Universe Made Of andWhat Holds It Together? It's an introduction to Elementary Particles and String Theory andwill be held May 12 at 4 p.m. in the Business Bldg., Room 9. This talk will be a generalintroduction to elementary particles, the most fundamental constituents of matter. Anoverview of the spectrum of particles, fundamental forces, and modern particle theories,including quantum field theory, the Standard Model, string theory, and "M" theory. The onlyprerequisite is a little math and a lot of common sense.

Best and Brightest Awards Nominations Close On Monday, May 16: A recognitionprogram for classified employees is under way, and with less than a week to go beforenominations close next Monday, more than 65 nominations have already come in. TomWixon, Public Relations Officer and Chair of the Employee Recognition Committee, saidthe awards are in five categories and represent work done over the entire current academic

year. "Five hard-working, dedicated classified employees will be recognized with a framedaward and a $50 restaurant gift certificate." Winners will be named by May 20, duringCalifornia Classified Employees Week. A reception is being planned for June to hand out theawards and certificates.

Marks Ends Dumont Show With Reception, Classical Guitar Music: The Walter N.Marks Center for the Arts invites everyone to a semester-end concert on Sunday, May 15from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Coachella Valley Guitar Ensemble, under the direction ofAnthony Arizaga, will perform both classical and folk music including six pieces by GasparSans from Instrucción de Música 1674, three fromMichael Praetorius , Dances of the LateRenaissance from "Terpsichore," and aRhumba. President Honored For Making a Difference: Dr. Maria Sheehan, Superintendent/President,was recognized by the Soroptimist International of La Quinta-Coachella Valley recently by beingnamed the recipient of the annual Making a Difference for Women award. During the luncheon, heldon Cinco de Mayo, she also received seven certificates and framed resolutions from local and nationalgovernments, including one from Riverside County and another from the U.S. House ofRepresentatives. The City of Palm Desert declared last Thursday "Maria Sheehan Day" in the city.Theaward is for "contributions to education as an instructor, counselor and administrator." Dr. Sheehancame to COD in 2001. She was the President at Modesto Junior College for six years. She hasworked in Education since 1971. Dr. Sheehan made history by becoming the first woman and the firstperson of Hispanic descent to hold the CEO position at COD.

Award-winning novelist Nina Revoyr will be on campus on Wednesday for an afternoondiscussion of her novel, Southland. Revoyr’s second novel earned a Lambda Literary Award,an Edgar Award nomination, as well as a spot on the Los Angeles Times’ Best Books of2003 list. Her talk will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Hilb Student Center and is open to students,staff, faculty and the public. Revoyr’s visit is in conjunction with May being Asian PacificHeritage month. COD Students Tour CSU Northridge: Twenty-six COD students jumped on the tour busto Cal State, Northridge recently. Students were greeted by Armando Duran, OutreachCounselor, and Javier Hernandez, Director of Student Outreach.

"The tour started with a shuttle ride through the campus to Student Housing, nicely furnishedtwo-bedroom apartments," said Jose Simo, COD Counselor. "We then toured various otherdepartments, resources centers, and their fabulous multilevel library.

"Mr. Duran provided our students with a lively working lunch by giving a humorouspresentation. He addressed admission and transfer requirements to prepare our students tosuccessfully join the CSU Northridge family. A special thanks to them for their partnershipand financial support of the campus tour."

Sweet Charity Opens May 20 at McCallum: COD's Division of P.E. and Performing Artswill present Sweet Charity, the famed Broadway musical currently undergoing a revival inNew York. The college production at the McCallum Theatre opens Friday, May 20 for fourperformances: Friday and Saturday nights at 8 and Saturday-Sunday matinees at 2. Ticketsare $20, $25 and $30. Doug and Anne Walker brought their whole family to the retirement dinner Friday. The Walkersare both retiring, he from the ranks of full time faculty (he's a former division dean as well) and shefrom the adjunct faculty. Their children and spouses and grandchildren showed up as a surprise. Morethan 100 persons attended the farewell dinner and were treated to a video presentation prepared byMike Hadley and the Media Center that featured old photos and touching testimonials from co-workersand friends of the retirees. The video presentation brought tears to some eyes. The retirees weregiven gifts from the President's Office and took turns cutting two large cakes.

Public Service Academy Provides Support at Coachella Music Festival: PSA studentsfrom COD worked more than 1,100 volunteer hours for the Indio Police Department duringthe recent Coachella Valley Music Festival. The world-renowned rock music festival drewnearly 100,000 visitors to the area. Dr. Rick Post, Dean, Business and Applied Sciences,said, "the efforts and hours spent by these students are an excellent example of positiveoutreach during one of the most popular events in the Valley. Our students and their facultyadvisors deserve to be commended for the volunteer efforts that do so much to portray ourprogram in a positive light." Police reports indicated there were fewer arrests this year and afreer flow of traffic, thanks in part to the additional manpower.

COD Student Accepted To USC Film School: The Insider has just learned that JamesYoung, a student at COD, has been accepted at the prestigious USC School of Cinema-Television Production, more commonly called USC Film School. According to hisinstructor, adjunct faculty member Michael Gladych, Young is just one of several CODstudents recently accepted at various film schools around the country, although USC is theMecca for students in this field. It's a 3-year program. During the first semester each studentmakes five digital video short movies.

Proud Father On Campus:Imagine walking into a bookstore and coming face to face with

a new hardcover novel written by someone with the same last name as yours. Now imaginethe bookstore is Borders in Rancho Mirage, about five minutes from campus, and the authoris your daughter. That's what happened to Tom Wixon recently. The Public RelationsOfficer and editor of the Insider is giddy with pride these days, following the publishing ofDirty Blonde and Half-Cuban by HarperCollins in New York. That's the name of the bookwriten by Lisa Wixon, his 35-year-old daughter. Her first novel is about a young Americanwoman who learns in a deathbed confession by her mother about a father she never knew,last seen in his homeland, Cuba. She charts a course for the island to search for her fatherand the book chronicles her adventures there and the surprising discovery she makes. "Iexpected chick lit," Wixon said after reading the book, "and got Hemingway instead. It's abrilliant piece of writing, in my opinion. Of course, I might be biased." The book is availableat Borders, Barnes and Noble and other book stores, and online at Amazon.com and othersources.

Bowlarama 2005! Ron Evans, Professor ofCeramics (left), displays some of the works upfor grabs at last week's annual ceramicssale. The chef is Roark Shirley, spooning upchili (you buy the bowl, you get the chili, orthe soup). Evans said students spent an entireday making more than 800 bowls for the Bowl-A-Thon. All proceeds will be used for the ceramicprogram to purchase new kiln shelves and otherequipment. More than $5,000 was raised. Evansalso conducted class during the sale. He askedstudents to select a piece and explain why theyliked it, what glazes were used, whether if wasfunctional or used primarily for decoration.

Vocal Ensemble Presents Renaissance, Broadway Tunes: Another in a series of freeconcerts is set for Wednesday, May 25 at 7 p.m. in the Pollock Theatre. Featuring vocalmusic from the Renaissance to Broadway, t he first half of the program will include worksby Bach, Brahms, an American Spiritual and the final scene from Henry Purcell's opera,Dido and Aeneas.

The second half of the program highlights music from the Broadway show Jekyll and Hyde,a choral celebration of the music of Stephen Sondheim, and the music of Cole Porter andGeorge Gershwin. The concert will feature student soloists.

Opera Workshop Has Different Format This Year: There's a change in the format for thespring Opera Workshop. Rather than produce a full opera, Performing Arts has opted topresent selections from Marriage of Figaro, Magic Flute, Fledermaus and Carmen alongwith a one act opera by Puccini called Il Tabarro (The Cloak). Performers are the OperaWorkshop ensemble, with a couple of seasoned operatic performers added, including notedPalm Springs mezzo soprano Daun Devore. Direction is by Mark Almy; musical directionby Robert E. Brown. The single performance is on Thursday, May 26 at 8 p.m. in PollockTheater on campus. Admission is free. Professor Lectures at Archaeological Society, Shows Desert Photography: Ruth Nolan,Associate Professor of English, presented a lecture which included a slide show of her desertphotography and a reading of her desert-themed poetry recently. She was invited to addressthe Coachella Valley Archaeological Society on the topic, “The Inner Desert: Stories of theMojave and Sonoran Deserts.” Nolan, who teaches desert literature courses at COD, theLiving Desert University, and the Cal State San Bernardino Desert Studies Center at ZZYZXSprings, has traveled extensively through the southwest and amassed a unique collection andsynthesis of desert literature.

New CNA Class Graduates: Pictured are some of the 22 students who completed the NurseAssistant course this spring and graduated recently. The graduates are awarded a course completioncertificate and upon passing the certification exam administered on campus by the California StateDepartment of Health Services, are certified to work as a Nursing Assistant (CNA). course helps graduates go on to work in a high-demand job market, providing basic care to patients innursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals, medical offices and clinics. This year, the Health and Welfare Committee received a great shockwith an initial quote for a rate increase of 25.7% for premiums for ouremployee health insurance – potentially costing the District $657,178.

Thoughts of the conundrum that so many companies, school districts,and college find themselves in today, of having to charging employeesa significant part of the cost of insurance, flashed through manypeople’s minds. We were able to negotiate some better rates, but evenwith the final rate including the changes presented to the Health andWelfare Committee, the District’s cost will be a total of $2.9 million.

Recently General Motors (nicknamed “Generous Motors" if you have any connection withMichigan) revealed that for every car that it produces, there is a total of $1,500 costassociated for insurance benefits – more than the cost of the all of the steel in the car! Aneighboring school district, DesertSands Unified, has a PPO where even they are engaged inserious cost sharing.

In our case a significant reason for the large increase this last year was a very high‘experience rate.’ We had an outstanding number of claims, especially compared to last year(we had no rate increase at all last year). You can never fault someone for using theirinsurance – that is why we have it. There are some things that we can do that can help ussave on insurance in the future and avoid those discussions of cost sharing. The main topicof this discussion after all of that is not about insurance costs but trying to avoid them bystaying healthy. We can save on insurance by saving ourselves through a bit of healthyliving. Here is the standard advice I receive:

Regular annual check-ups. We should all have one every year.Use your dental insurance on our great teeth cleaning benefit for the four times peryear.Take vitamins.Have a balanced diet.Watch your weight. (I am not perfect at all on this one!)

While this is not a comprehensive list of things you can do to stay healthy, and recognizingthat there are many other theories and practices that pertain to good health and that eachperson has his own approach to good health, the point is that maintaining a healthy balanceis important.

This may be a bit of unusual advice coming from Human Resources but the bottom line isthat maintaining good health is a real cost issue for our insurance – for you and me!

COD SportsTennis Team Captures State Title (Again): Not that anyone is taking it for granted, but theRoadrunners are once again on top in the California Community College tennis ranks. CODhas won 10 state team titles in men's tennis, including seven of the last eight years. Theybeat Fresno City College on Friday, 5-2. Jack Hui, Anthony Gomez, Cesar Villares andFelipe Villasenor all won individual matches to lead the Roadrunners. The doubles team ofCarlos Catalan and Villasenor also won their match. Hui, Catalan, Gomez and Robert Sabowere scheduled to go on to compete in the individual championships and Sabo and Gomezearned a chance to compete for the doubles title. COD finished its season 19-1. The team iscoached by Carl Schroeder, who was on the 1979 COD team when it won the state title forthe first time.

Championship COD Tennis Team Has International Flavor, But Still Seeks LocalTalent: Despite it's "United Nations" roster, the COD men's tennis team continues to searchout talented local prep players. Fencers End Season: COD's fencing season officially ended with the May 7 USFA/SanBernardinoDivision tournament, held at San Bernardino Valley College. COD is still the topfencingclub in the division, but faced stiff opposition from new club, Desert Fencing Academy. Andin case you didn't know, our COD fencing coach opened Desert Fencing Academy threeyears ago. "It's a unique situation, and very few coaches ever do it, to have the same coachrun a college fencing program and their own fencing club, but it's working well," said coachLeslie Taft."Our team fencers at DFA are 13-16 years old and have been fencing with me for two years.Most come to DFA and train two to three days a week; some are even earning their P.E.credit through the fencing program at DFA. And then the COD fencers come to DFA onFriday nights and Saturday afternoons to train, so both groups have the opportunity to traintogether, and that makes it fun and exciting when they meet and fence against each otherat tournaments."
