Belair Play Community Consultation As communicated in recent newsletters, we are planning to make some changes in our school organisation around play. A community Consultation is planned for Wednesday 14 August at 6.00pm in the school hall. This should last for approximately one hour. Please come along, hear what we are planning and share your thoughts. Congratulations to our Hunter Dance Festival performers Last week our senior and junior dancers performed with dozens of other schools at Wests in town. It was no coincidence that our Juniors opened the show on Thursday night and our Seniors closed the show on Tuesday. Both groups wowed the audience with stunning performances. Thanks to Mrs Mounser for coordinating our dance program and thanks to parents for supporting our students to give them this opportunity. Regards, Warwick Beard, Principal

Deputy Principal’s Message

Congratulations to 5K and 5G for being the classes of the week at assembly last week and to class 1B at

the K-2 assambly yesterday. You should be proud of the examplary behaviour that you model.

Anti- bullying: What is bullying? A shared understanding of bullying is the starting point for effectively preventing and responding to bullying. Making sure everyone at our school shares the same definition of bullying is essential. Sometimes things that are called bullying are not really bullying at all.

The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says:

Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening.

Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:

• mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance) • not liking someone or a single act of social rejection • one-off acts of meanness or spite • isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved.

Preventing bullying involves everyone talking together openly and respectfully.

Belair Language of Resilience The current resilience focus is: Control

Year 3 to Year 6

Dear Parents and Caregivers This year the Australian Schools’ Competition organisers have introduced some changes to their various competitions.

These changes include later sitting dates, online testing (except the writing for years 3 and 4) and a parent online

payment system.

The sitting dates for all competitions are between September 3rd and September 19th as outlined below. Information

about how to pay directly to UNSW Global is also outlined below. If you have any difficulties with the new online payment

system, please contact the school office.

These competitions are open to all students, however parents are advised that the papers are set at quite a high level

and are designed to test more able students. Our school has participated in these competitions for many years and both

parents and students find them informative.

Student Attendance: Parents must ensure:

Their children of compulsory school age are enrolled in a government or registered non-

government school or, they are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) for Home Schooling.

Their children who are enrolled at school attend every day the school is open for their instruction.

They provide an explanation for absences by means such as a telephone call, written note, skoolbag app or email to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence.

They work in partnership with the school to plan and implement strategies to support regular attendance at school, including communicating with the school if they are aware of issues impacting on their child’s attendance or engagement with school.

• From the beginning of 2015, Family holidays and travel are no longer considered under the

Exemption from School - Procedures. Travel outside of vacation period is now counted as an absence for statistical purposes. Where the Principal considers that the travel is appropriate during the school term, the parent submits an Application for Extended Leave – Travel for the principal to approve. The Principal will request travel documentation, such as travel itinerary or e- ticket to attach to the application. (downloaded from the link; Application for Extended Leave (Travel or Holiday) The absences will be recorded as “L” - Leave

KIDS’ PARTY CONFIDENTIAL @ BELAIR PS IN BOOK WEEK 2019

Kids addicted to screens?

Sean Murphy can help!

After seven years of running birthdays, bar mitzvahs and every other kind of family bash, he’s the ultimate instigator of real-life fun! Sean’s show Kids' Party Confidential is a hilarious insider’s guide on how kids can create their own excitement without pining for Minecraft or dying to watch Frozen. Again.

Equal parts stand-up, storytelling and celebration, Sean has created a show for adults and kids 5 to 12 that educates and entertains. “When it comes to kids parties, I’ve seen it all: amazing highs, terrible humiliations, endless amounts of birthday cake,” Sean recalls. “It’s my duty to pass on my knowledge to the next generation. This is important work.”

In one hour Kids’ Party Confidential guides the audience towards fesve enlightenment through coume creaon, balloon bending and a bold re-invenon of Happy Birthday to You.

“The show is a comedy, but very different to a typical stand-up routine,” Sean says. “It’s all about the kids getting involved and creating the best fiesta ever – with a little help from this idiot right here.”

Performer Bio:

Sean Murphy makes people laugh all over the world. Based in Sydney, he has toured shows to the Adelaide and Edinburgh Fringes as well as the Melbourne Comedy Festival and Sydney Opera House. If you haven't heard of him, your younger relations have: Sean's been an educator, entertainer and comedy act for thousands of kids and the young-at-heart.

"Fast-paced and wickedly funny" (Primary Times, UK), his shows bring together a combination of stand-up, theatre and clowning to create truly delicious idiocy. Bon appétit!

“A delight for kids and adults!" Ian Zammit

Water Safety Program Newcastle Council Lifeguards presented a Water Safety Program to K-2 students on Wednesday 31st August 2019 .The program was based around teaching preventative measures and basic fundamentals of water safety on the beach at the pool safety and around open water.

ES1 Public Speaking Last week 6 class representatives took to the BPS stage to present their speech. The quality was extremely high with Mrs Kelly being set the difficult task of selecting our two ES1 zone representatives. Congratulations to Alia Mc and Aisling T who have been selected to represent Belair PS at the Zone Early Stage 1 Public Speaking which will take place at Stockton PS on Friday 16th August. Thank you to Mrs Kelly for adjudicating the final. All speakers should be very proud of their efforts and we wish Alia and Aisling all the best next week at Zone.

Stage 2 Creative Groups Stage 2 students have been participating in mixed Creative Groups on Wednesday afternoons. One of the activities this term involves creating things using Flexo bricks. Flexo is the world’s only flexible bricks system. Once familiar with how the bricks fit together, students are able to create objects that they can bounce, bend, wrap around or even wear! Here are some of the Group 4 students having a lot of fun!
