Principal’s Report Bega High School consistently strives to deliver wide-ranging educational experiences and to prepare life-long learners by supporting the physical, emotional and social wellbeing of all students.

Yet another example of this approach was the Ride to Work/School challenge taken up by a group of enthusiastic students and staff in week 2. With health and safety a major priority they were shadowed by a driver and enjoyed a cool but dry ride from Tathra and are to be congratulated for their stamina and perseverance.

Congratulations to all those who also participated in the Bega Fun Run and Walk – again a fair representation from the school in the form of both staff and students (maybe next year for me!)

Parents and carers took advantage of an opportunity to comment on the school’s engagement with families and the community by participating in a forum run by Taryn Woods from the Department of Education.

We will be looking carefully at all the recommendations from the forum and from other surveys and sources of information in our planning and training over the coming year. Thank you to all the participants for your valuable assistance and input.

The school’s student leaders have had several meetings with their coordinators and are planning activities and structures for the future.

They are great ambassadors for their peers, the school and the community and I look forward to working with students Hayley Danvers, James Burgess, Meg Johnson, Elyse Philipzen, Morgan Durrant-Curtis, Craig Pearce, teachers Sophie Scroope, Ann Smith, David Britton and Carly Bexterman and the larger group that will be formed as a result of their work.

Be on the lookout for information about the Annual Awards events planned for Friday, 9 December as this is one of our most important opportunities to celebrate a range of talents, skills and achievements of students and staff.

It is also a significant event where many community organisations, businesses and individuals contribute to the life

and legacy of the school through their generous financial support and recognition of the values that the school and community aspire to – achievement in all areas of life through respect, responsibility and effort.

Year 11 Hospitality Year 11 Hospitality students operated their first restaurant for staff. Students prepared the venue for service as well as a two course meal and coffees. They worked well as a team to deliver quality customer service. Staff and students are looking forward to many more restaurant opportunities.

Year 9 Food Technology Develop a Packet Mix Year 9 students designed and made their own packet mixes of cakes, slices and muffins. They used their own recipes to produce a packet mix.

Year 10 Work Experience

As a student, work experience is one of the most valuable activities that you can do to support your career development. It gives you time at a workplace to learn about an occupation or industry. You may observe others doing

their job, have a go yourself or do a combination of watching and doing. It is an opportunity to develop skills and networks, learn about the world of work and to decide what kinds of things you would like to do. Why do work experience?

Work experience has many benefits. It can give you: knowledge of what a job involves structured, supervised, hands-on experience skills that will be recognised in other workplaces confidence in your ability to learn and master new

skills and tasks work–life skills, such as communicating well or

working in teams a chance to demonstrate how you can contribute in a

work environment an understanding of the world of work an opportunity to demonstrate commitment and

reliability a new referee to add to your resume an employment opportunity.

Getting the most out of your work experience If you're offered the opportunity to do work experience, make the time as worthwhile as possible. Consider doing the following three things.

1. Ask lots of questions. By asking questions, you demonstrate that you're eager to learn and grow and that you have a genuine interest in the role and opportunity. But most importantly, it allows you to gain more in-depth understanding.

2. Find out as much as you can about the job, the industry and about people's career paths. Work experience is the best way to find out if you're suited to a job. It gives you a real world opportunity to 'try out' an occupation. Also, the close proximity to people who already work in the occupation gives you an opportunity to ask questions.

3. Keep a diary or log to record your experiences and to list the skills that you practice and learn. You could also add these into a career portfolio, if you maintain one. These can then be used as examples in your resume or during job interviews.

Deciding to do work experience A recent employer survey found that employers believe work experience or volunteer work to be an effective means for school students to improve their employment prospects. With these benefits, deciding to do work experience is easy.

Take advantage of the Work Experience time period set aside at Bega High School in Week 7 (21st Nov-25th Nov) & Week 8 (28th Nov-2nd Dec) this term. Now is the time to decide what you are interested in pursuing.

You can either contact an employer yourself and ask them which week they would be able to host you and see Mrs Morgan in Careers to set up the paperwork for it OR if you are unsure who or how to contact an employer drop in and I will assist you in the process. Paperwork for Work Experience should be under way at least 3 weeks prior to the commencement of the placement.

Take the leap, it may lead to something you love! Mrs Brooke Morgan Relieving Careers Adviser

Bega High School End of Year activities To end our 2016 school year with a positive note and to celebrate the values of respect, responsibility and effort, Bega High School will be running a program of alternative educational activities for two days during the last week of term 4.

All students will select ONE activity from a range of fun and engaging options: computers to crafts, fishing to film making, muscle making to mountain biking, sports to sound recording.

Stay tuned for further announcements including an information booklet or choices and permission notes that will be coming home soon!

Ride2School 2016 Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s Ride2School day on Wednesday 19th October, Will, Taj, Lara, Minka, Jack, Murray and Cailem.

The riding group consisting of students, staff and a parent, left Tathra's Lawrence Park just before 7am, pedaled 18kms through the picturesque Bega Valley, arriving at school not long after 8.

The riders were blessed with beautiful weather (although some might argue the fingers and toes got a little chilly), stunning views and thoughtful drivers as we cruised into town. Students and staff enjoyed a free breakfast and showers on arrival at school. It is an amazing achievement and we are all very proud of your skill, effort and promotion of active healthy lifestyles.

Thank you to all involved, the considerate and thoughtful drivers that gave us space and encouragement, and the parents who organised the early start and pick up of bikes. Also a huge thanks to Mr Phil Lord for driving the support car.
