Focus Education will provide a summary [as last year]
School has replaced NC sub-levels with progress indicators, termed: “Expected”; “Exceeded”; “Mastery”
2015-2016 data has to be treated cautiously – nationally due to the immense changes of this year’s KS2 SATs.
Nationally, there are questions around the reliability of the Writ-ing moderation
School was moderated, one of only a few, which was a very ar-duous process for Sarah Turner and her team
David How shared the national picture, where some local au-thorities have seen their whole results go up or down
School’s not moderated have reported massive increases in writing compared to their results previously
School’s KS2 Writing is at 72.2 [Manchester’s is 69.8] – Nation-ally it is 74 [gives a score of -1.8]
However, ALL other KS2 scores of % of KS2 pupils achieving the expected standard show Beaver Road pupils’ performance to be at least 12.2 above the national figures.
Only Writing, for which Beaver Road was one of the very few schools to be moderated is below National – hence, school concerns around the reliability of this measure to inform future planning and intervention – Is this really an area of serious weakness for the school? What would school’s figures be when tracked against only schools who were moderated for Writing?

Possibility next year that writing TA is removed and replaced with the
tested GPS result. This would give Beaver Road a combined score of
82.2% and a National average of 69%
KS1 Combined RWM [Reading, Writing, Maths] is +15.8 against National; +17.6 against Manchester
KS2 Combined RWM is +13.7 against National; +17.7 against Manchester [Even with the moderated Writing]
School has put Writing intervention in place since Y5 due to a high SEND cohort [10 pupils in the year] with support for Fran-cis Naismith, who worked all year with the Y5 cohort
Maths Progress and Attainment are both fantastic
KS2 is performing well above national and above floor standard
See: Floor Standards Explained in the assessment Report [At-tached] – Here is the key information:
Floor Standard Explained
The floor standard is the minimum standard for pupil attainment and /
or progress that government expects schools to meet.
No school will be confirmed as being below the floor until December
2016 when schools’ performance tables are published.
In 2016, a school will be above the floor if:
At least 65% of pupils meet the expected standard in English
reading, English writing and mathematics, or
The school achieves “sufficient progress” scores in all three sub-
jects. At least
-5 in English reading, -5 in Mathematics and -7 in English Writ-
ing.
To be above the floor, the school needs to meets either attainment or
all of the progress elements.

Progress” indicator
Beaver Road’s
Progress KS1 to
KS2
Difference
Reading -5 +0.2 +5.2
Writing TA -7 -2.3 +4.7
Maths -5 +1.9 +6.9
Beaver Road is positive + in all three measures, therefore we are not a coasting school and are above the 65 Floor Standard

School is investing in a critical study of Writing across all phas-es. This will be led by Gemma Byrne and will focus on how to evidence, through the year, where Writing opportunities can be built in and taught through “Talk For Write”
Daniel Berry has been appointed to lead Maths; Reading and writing intervention to build on Francis Naismith’s previous, suc-cessful intervention – five mornings a week; focus on Y5 with support for Y6, closer to the SATs
Chris also updated Governors regarding closing the attainment gap through Pupil Premium funding [see the Assessment report, attached] Pupil Premium Closing the Gap
The gap is narrowing, over time, against Non-FSM broken down by Reading, Writing, SPaG and Maths
Until the national ‘group’ data (Pupil Premium, EAL, SEN, Gender) is re-
leased with RaiseOnline, analysis and comparison of this cannot yet
been made. Based RaiseOnline 2015 our Pupil Premium Data show:
Chris then summarised the picture of Attainment and Progress planning and intervention across the whole school:
Autumn term – plugging the gap and identifying learning gaps – whole school focus on any pupil whose performance has dipped

School looking for all significant gaps – to focus on individual pupils and their progress in specific areas
Each Friday – teachers assess how well all the class has per-formed and engaged through a four day teaching week
Friday is for pre-teaching those pupils who were not secure through the week’s learning and for extension work for those pupils who have exceeded expectations
TAs have less intervention that is passive, sat in class, reacting to the learning at a task-based level. Intervention will be more focused, targetted and time-limited with clear outcomes in order to measure individual progress – they will be skills-based, to build up competence over time and will involve mentoring
Teachers target their pupils’ learning gaps through pre-teaching and a targetted intervention programme
Governors thanked Chris for his detailed, comprehensive and ac-curate report David How then briefly outlined the school’s priorities for 2016-2017:
Developing School’s Clever Classrooms project
Developing Beaver Road as a Reading School
Establishing summative approaches in Science
Establishing Digital Leaders across school See below, taken from the Head teacher’s Report September 2016 [Attached]: School Improvement 2016 to 2017
The School Key Focus Areas continue to be:
Progress and rate of progress of all pupils from Year to Year and
not just from Y2 to Y6
Early identification by Class Teachers of, and appropriate inter-
vention/action for, pupils making less than expected progress
during a Year or between Years, particularly where those chil-
dren are Pupil Premium supported
Involvement and inclusion of all pupils in identifying and under-
standing their learning needs and how to improve
Beaver Road Primary School Standards & Curriculum Committee Minutes 03/10/2016 DRAFT
- 7 -
Involvement and inclusion of all parents and carers in identifying
and understanding their children’s learning needs and how to
help them improve
The School Priorities for Action are:
Clever Classrooms, from research into practice. There is clear
evidence (Clever Classrooms HEAD Project University of Salford
2015), that the physical characteristics of primary schools im-
pact on pupil’s learning progress in reading, writing and math-
ematics.
Developing our School as a Reading School – National Literacy
Trust ‘Developing your whole-school reading culture’ Year 2
Establishing summative assessment for subject knowledge in
Science and formative assessment of Scientific Enquiry through-
out the year
Establishing Digital Leaders (children) in classes and Year groups
across the School

After parent/carer consultation, the feedback from parent/carers is that homework needs more struc-ture with clear and specific guidance and recom-mendations for parent/carers. School has made the following changes to the homework policy, guid-ance and content based on this consultation: 1) Maths HW to be delivered using “Rapid Recall” maths programme, which tests number bonds, times tables etc. using a games-based format. This programme is for all year groups: Y1-6. It will sup-port the maths learning in the children’s classes. The work will be assessed back in class through a series of fast, games-based tasks. Children will receive stickers/certificates and their photo on the “Rapid Recall” board at school. 2) Spelling/Handwriting resources that will be sent home and can be completed any time that half term. The spellings are in line with the level of vo-cabulary school expects each child to practice de-pending on their year group/phase. 3) Parents reading to their children at home every day. The suggested timetable is: Monday – “Rapid Recall” Wednesday – Spelling Thursday – Handwriting Daily – Reading with parent/carer(s) Beaver Road will continue to seek parent/carer views and bring subsequent action plans and inter-ventions to the Governor’s meeting for approval, evaluation and review. Homework guidance and advice as well as content will also be a prominent feature of the new Beaver Road website, launched in February 2014. Update – School website guidance on “Learning at Home” has been reviewed and updated to include a rationale and guidance on how to develop and deliver “Learning at Home” activities for parents and carers – 03/11/14
