March 2014
MARCH – Spring is in the air!! So why does it still feel so cold ?
Oh well - Daylight Savings Time
begins March 9, it has to start warming up then.
February was rather busy. We had
a great turn out at the Race Manage-ment training day and can hopefully look forward to expanding our roster of PRO’s at the club from that event. Also well attended was the Racing Rules and Tactics class - very informa-tive. The monthly Steak Night was another success, thanks to all that helped put that on. The Tennis Lad-ders appear to be organized and ready to roll. Work has progressed on sever-al projects around the club grounds and buildings.
And Sunset/First Fridays continue
to draw a good size crowd. While I am on this subject. Let me say that the “usual suspects” that attend almost every Sunset and/or First Friday would really like to see some new faces (maybe I am only speaking for myself, but I think not). These weekly events are a great opportunity to MEET, mix and mingle with other club members in a very relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy a cocktail or two (or not), typically watch a beautiful sunset across the river (accompanied by a ‘conch’ serenade), and enjoy the social side of the club. Come one, come ALL.
Of particular note will be Friday evening March 28. The annual ‘Flag Raising’ event is scheduled for that
evening. Traditionally the ‘Flag Raising’ has signaled the beginning of the sailing season, and it still does as the dinghy spring series begins that Saturday – but at BYSC I see it as a bit more than just that. I see it as an unofficial statement that Spring has really arrived and that ALL of the activities of BYSC are about to get into full swing again. So, I encourage members of all stripes to attend. Come one, come ALL.
Other upcoming events at the club ? There are several. You can find the details of each throughout
this issue of the Bow Watch, so I will not repeat them here. I hope to see ALL of you around the club in the near future – and I hope to see many of you on the wa-
ter soon as well. Chuck Rushing Commodore
Hey Ya’ll,
I don’t know about Ya’ll but I am ready for Spring-
time! Summer Camp and Swim Lesson registration will
open March 15th for members on our New and Im-
proved Website!
The website is getting a makeover and will be open for
business March 15th. I’m ready to see all my favorite
Yacht Club Kids for another great summer!
Speaking of Summer, our swimming pool will now be
equipped with Salt Water Chlorinators and there will be
a few other changes out there as well, so look forward to
a very refreshing pool opening in April!
I’m hiring lifeguards and camp staff so if you know a
young( or young at heart) individual ready for the best
summer ever, send them my way!

Club Raft Up in Bull River
On March 22nd/23rd there will be a club raft up in Bull Riv-
er, opposite Parrot Creek in the Coosaw River where both the Sea-life and Bird-life have been spectacular.
It is about a 2 hour cruise from BYSC on a fair tide) and very convenient for the Dataw owners. Lots of space, lots of water, lots of shelter and good holding. Many of the larger boats owned by
members of BYSC will be heading up river for this party on the water.
Both of the Junior sailing boats (Ranger and the Catalina 22) are
available for Charter. Please contact Ricky Akers through the club for
a booking
It is hoped that we will see an amalgamation of the Cruising boats,
Motor boats and Crew boats at this event. All are welcome and there
will be enough real estate on the water to accommodate revelers.
For those who wish to see what it is like spending a night on a boat
out on the water, there are some owners who have spaces on board to
accommodate guests.
The Commodore has informed me that the club will provide a Keg
for the event to aid in promoting this event.
If anyone wishes to join us either in boat or in person, or is interested
in any way, please contact Simon Jenkins at

Call for River Rats!
Training for new River Rats begins at 12:30 PM Sunday, March 9
Experienced Rats and PROs should come at 3 PM BYSC is looking for new River Rats! These specially trained club members manage our club races and regat-
tas. Wearing their trademark, yellow t-shirts, they set the race course, start the races, record the finishes, help
capsized sailors, manage the marks and keep the competition running smoothly.
This year's training will outline signal boat, mark boat and safety boat duties, answer your questions and get
you scheduled to start working on the water! At about 3 PM, we will go down to the dock for an on-water session
to bring it all together.
Training continues during our Spring Series races - first race day is March 30 and racing continues throughout
April and May. On-water roles include PRO (Principal Race Officer), signal boat crew members (timer, flagman,
line spotter and recorders) and mark/safety boat skippers and crew.
Our goal is to have the best race management team in SAYRA (the Southeast Yacht Racing Association), with
enough members so we always have a full roster and no one has to work too often. And we're doing it! The River
Rats get big kudos every year at our Lowcountry Regatta and at the regional and national regattas we are invited
to host at our club.
Bring your calendar and your t-shirt size. See you on Sunday March 9th at 12:30 pm!
Questions? Call John or Marge Barber, 525-1316 or 575-8998

The Classic Boat Rally
April 24-26, 2014
The 9th annual Classic Boat Rally will again begin at Savannah Yacht Club (SYC) on Thurs-
day, April 24 (for set-up and practice), sail on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) to South Car-
olina Yacht Club (SCYC) on Hilton Head (about 25 miles) on Friday, April 25, and sail from
SCYC to Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club (BYSC, (about 20 miles) on Saturday, April 25.
Sailboats (non-planing) over 15 feet LOA, with a PHRF handicap rating of 240 or higher,
are invited to participate. Each boat is required to have a working motor capable of 3.5 knots
for 8 hours operation or an accompanying towing vessel plus a VHF radio for communica-
tions. Navigation charts and/or GPS required.
Racing is part of the fun, using staggered starts based on Handicaps, with the slowest going
first and the fastest starting last. Thursday afternoon’s practice race will be a round trip from
SYC to Thunderbolt Bridge. Friday and Saturday will have 2 races imbedded in the journey
each day, with the second race starting shortly after the end of the first race.
Cocktails and Dinners will be at SYC Thursday and SCYC Friday using your credit card
and temporary membership cards issued at the hosting clubs. Awards for racing, sportsman-
ship, and Concurs judging will be made after all boats are in on Saturday at BYSC (around 6
PM).
Sleeping accommodations can be in your boat (the clubs have showers) or on shore. At Sa-
vannah we stay at Country Inn and Suites Mid-town and Hilton Garden Inn at Hilton Head.
Entry Fee is $50 for the entire event or $30 for 1 day (Friday or Saturday) to cover trophies
and gas and meals for Race Committee.
Discount to $40 and $25 for entries prior to April 16.
Optional ICW sailing convoy to Savannah from Beaufort: Depart Wednesday, April 23, 9
AM from BYSC, anchor north of Savannah River, arrive by noon Thursday at SYC.

The Hummock Rendezvous
A Two-Day Boating adventure
May 10-11, 2014
A few years ago, Ricky Akers and some Beaufortonian friends bought a small island near the intersection of
Trenchard’s Inlet and Station Creek, between St. Phillips Island and Capers Island. To see the location area click on
http://sc.usharbors.com/explore/harbor-guide/capers-island-trenchards-inlet
On their Island, which they call “Hummock”, are two basic dwellings having 13 bunks total. Ricky invites mem-
bers of Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club and Dataw Island Yacht Club to come for a visit on May 10-11. Sailors and
motor-boaters are welcome. This is “The Hummock Rendezvous”.
Ricky, with some help from others, will cook dinner of Hummock Stew. Inside overnight-sleeping accommoda-
tions will be allocated by Ricky (bring your own sleeping bag). Others can camp on the grounds or sleep on their
boats. Plan your arrival on Saturday for 4 to 6 PM (high tide will be around 6:30 PM).
Sailors may race to the island or come without racing. The route from BYSC can be the Beaufort River to Port
Royal Sound, then up Station Creek, or out to buoy R14 and entering Trenchards Inlet (see special instructions). The
route using Station Creek is 17 nautical miles (nm); going around to Trenchards Inlet is 28 nm.
Coming from Dataw, the route requires going out the Morgan River and St. Helena Sound to buoy #4, then
turning south and east in the Atlantic to Trenchard’s Inlet, a distance of 28 nm to the entrance to Trenchard’s Inlet,
plus 5 nm to Hummock. An alternative for Dataw members would be to come around to BYSC on the ICW Fri-
day, then proceed Saturday from BYSC.
The racing will be Saturday, with a bottle of rum to the winners (sharing the contents with other participants is
expected). Sunday, everyone may depart anytime. High tide is around 7 AM. Continental breakfast will be served
after 8 AM.
Registration is in two steps. First, we need to know if you have an interest, weather permitting. This preliminary
registration will put you in the loop for receiving further communications about the event. This does not commit
you. It gives us a feel for potential interest. Second, commitment comes on Thursday, May 8. By this time we, and
you, will know the weather forecast. We may cancel if the weather looks too adverse. You might not want to go for-
ward if you are uncomfortable with the weather outlook. We need time to buy the groceries based on your commit-
ment that day. Whether you actually participate is your decision; if we don’t hear from you on May 8 we will as-
sume you are not coming.
Racing Saturday: The PHRF (keel) boats are invited to race to Trenchard’s Inlet on Saturday. We will use stag-
gered starts, with the slowest boats (highest PHRF handicap) starting at 8 AM. The required rounding marks will be
R14 for the BYSC fleet and #4 for the Dataw fleet. The finish of the races for both fleets will be due east of the en-
trance to Trenchard’s Inlet. The entrance to the Inlet must be approached with caution, using motors, heading due
west between the breakers and the marsh where the water is sufficiently deep. Look for detailed guidance, and use
your GPS. Each skipper is responsible for his vessel, and extreme care is strongly suggested. Non-PHRF (dinghy)
classes need to organize their own starts, if racing.
Continued next page…...
Saturday anchoring: While there is a small dock on one of the creeks of Hummock Island, it cannot accommo-
date overnight tie-ups. You will need to anchor overnight nearby. There is ample space for anchoring to the west on
Station Creek. We will ask for some motorboat cooperative shuttling between land and anchored boats.
Sunday departures: You may depart at your leisure. High tide will be around 7 AM. It is less than an hour by
motorboat via Station Creek to BYSC, plenty of time to get back for church, Mother Day’s lunch, or dinghy racing at
BYSC by motorboat. Sailboats could also use Station Creek in the morning, but the low point, where the tides meet,
is 4 feet at low tide. Going back down Trenchard’s Inlet to the Atlantic should be fine assuming a departure by 10
AM (low tide at 1 PM Sunday).

Dave Ullman Selected as Special Guest Competitor at 2014 Championship of Champions Imagine a regatta where every competitor is a current one-design class champion. US Sailing’s Championship of Champions is recognized as one of the more unique adult racing events in the country. All
helmsmen have qualified for this event by winning a one-design class National, North American, or World Championship in the over the past year. These skippers and their teams will race for the Jack Brown Trophy while representing their class. The com-petition will be challenging with many decorated sailors competing on the same course. The 2014 edition of this US Sailing clas-sic is hosted by the Edgewater Yacht Club in Cleveland, Ohio on October 9-12.
Each year a guest helm is invited. Past guest helms have included Paul Cayard and Betsy Alison, and other sailing luminaries. This year’s guest competitor will be three-time 470 World Champion (’77, ’78, ‘80) and 2007 Melges 24 World Champion Dave Ullman. He was also US Sailing’s 1996 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.
Ullman returns to the championship he won in 1980 (sailed in the 470). He also returns to Thistle sailing, which is one of sev-eral class national championships he has collected over the years.
"It's a strong event again, and when I got the invite, how could I say no," said Ullman. "This championship has a warm spot in my heart. You get to race against, and meet with, sailors you don't usually sail with. It's just fun to sail against all sorts of one-design champions."
"It's all about coming into this event from another class and sailing your best. It can be really interesting to see how it turns out and who comes out on top."
Inaugurated in 1976, US Sailing selects 19 one-design class champions that have been nominated by their class associations to compete at the Championship of Champions. As one of US Sailing’s most popular events, the championship is held in a dif-ferent class each year, and boats are supplied by the host club. Classes range from conventional to cutting edge and have includ-ed the Y-Flyer, Snipe, Hobie Cat, J-24, Sunfish, Etchell, Lightning to name just a few. Helmsmen and their crew will be tested in Thistles to see if they can hold their own.
The event has crowned champions ranging in age from 13 to over 70. Many competitors are amateur sailors and some are professionals. The Championship of Champions features singlehanded sailors and others who sail with up to five or six crew.
What makes this event unique is that all are top competitors and anyone can win. Here are additional requirements: • The qualifying period is from August 1, 2013 – July 31, 2014. • Champions and their classes must be current members of US Sailing and American citizens or permanent residents. • Applications are accepted from January through July. Sailors who normally sail in the U.S. and are members of a club, class or association affiliated with US Sailing are eligible. Applications are evaluated on three main criteria: • 40% Sailor Criteria – how many major events have they done in the past three years; number of races in national champion-
ship, number of attendants at national championship • 20% Class Criteria – size, diversity, depth and activity of class nationally • 40% Other – Sailor Athlete status, class membership in US Sailing, previous experience, demonstrated Corinthian spirit,
etc.
The team of selectors researches each applicant's ability and background by examining regatta results, drawing on personal knowledge and researching the relative difficulty of the class championships. The Championship of Champions committee tries to get as many divergent classes as possible. Classes that have never proposed a champion to compete are encouraged to do so. In 2013, over 60% of the competitors had never sailed in the event before.
Invitations will be issued in early August, 2014. Apply now at http://championships.ussailing.org/Adult/CofC.htm. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BYSC 2014 Junior Tennis Training!
Winter: January – February (8 weeks for $120) Spring: March, April, May (12 weeks for $180)
And…The BYSC Junior Tennis Festival! May 17th
Beaufort QuickStart Tennis: “10 and Under Tennis,” is a USTA competitive play format that features modified equip-
ment and courts, allowing kids to rally and play the game of tennis earlier than the expected advanced lesson training. With shorter and narrower courts, lower nets and lower compression balls, kids build the confidence and ability to cover the entire court. Now, children 10 and under can compete and play, moving their way through a progressive court system until they reach the traditional court size where ages 10-12 and up compete.
Beaufort Intermediate and Advanced Juniors: This session narrows in on the more serious-minded tennis
athlete. While this group of players will strive for improvement – and not without laughs and fun – high performance tennis is the priority. We will continue to focus on the whole player by advancing:
Technical development; Good footwork and conditioning
Court consciousness in doubles and singles; Point set up; Shot making and closing
Consistency; Patterns of advanced play; Match philosophy
Honesty; Sportsmanship; Character
