The Los Angeles Unified School District is dedicated to providing a sustainable, healthy, and comfortable learning envi-ronment for all of our students.

Renewable Energy As of October 2014, the District has com-pleted 62 of 67 projects with a total solar capacity of 19.85 MW. To date these projects have generated close to 61M kWh, avoiding almost 42,000 metric tons of CO2 and saving $9.7M in General Fund costs. Online dashboards provide stu-dents the opportunity to observe energy produc on in real me.

Conserva on Efforts at LAUSD LAUSD pursues many energy and water savings ini a ves in collabora on with u lity and water providers, including ligh ng and bathroom fixture retrofits.

To address the State’s severe drought, LAUSD is pursuing Low Impact Develop-ment (LID) storm water management to replenish the water table and is working to expand the use of recycled water for irriga on on school campuses.

Innova ve Solu ons The District is constantly looking for inno-va ve sustainability strategies, and has conducted pilots and studies to assess the feasibility of emerging technologies including wireless thermostats, LED class-room ligh ng, and cool schoolyard coa ngs.

Proposi on 39 CA Clean Energy Jobs Act will provide LAUSD a total of approxi-mately $130M over the next 5 years to improve the energy efficiency of its schools. The District will focus on retro-commissioning high schools. LAUSD will partner with California Conserva on Corps to provide educa on and training for students.

Sustainable Schools In 2003, the Board mandated that every new school and major moderniza on meet the minimum criteria of the Califor-nia Collabora ve for High Performance Schools (CA-CHPS) green ra ng system. CHPS defines high performance schools as low impact, energy, water and re-source efficient, and healthy and com-fortable. Three District schools have also been cer fied Gold according to United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green school ra ng system.

Awareness and Eco‐Literacy A crucial element of the District’s sustain-ability efforts is fostering environmental literacy and sustainable behavior. The District works with u lity providers and non-profit partners to provide environ-mental literacy and awareness programs for students and staff. LAUSD is partner-ing with the City of Los Angeles and u lity providers to launch a drought awareness ini a ve in November 2014.
