Summer Feeding Toolkit$15,000—exclusive sponsorship

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was created to ensure that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals during summer vacation. An updated Summer Feeding Toolkit is an online resource for SNA members that provides valuable information on how to start up or enhance participation in the SFSP. Sponsors benefit from a year-round campaign, with additional promotion during the spring.

Key sponsor benefits include:

Summer Feeding Toolkit W 3

As a school nutrition professional, you already know how important it is to provide nutritious meals for students through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs (NSLP and SBP). But when the last bell of the school year rings, many of the children who rely on these programs throughout the year are left at serious risk of going hungry. The federal Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) can help bridge the hunger gap.

If you think your community could benefit from participating in the SFSP, or you would like to expand your existing program through better promotion and marketing, this Summer Feeding Toolkit—brought to you by the School Nutrition Association (SNA) and the National Watermelon Promotion Board—is for you. The toolkit will help you:

W understand the fundamentals of running a summer feeding program

W learn about the Seamless and Simplified administrative options and decide which one is right for you

W find inspiration in the best practices of other school nutrition directors and their successful—and very different—summer feeding programs W promote your program and work with the media

W discover new menu and recipe ideas

Summer Feeding: Does it Close the Gap? In July 2008, summer nutrition programs (notably the SFSP and the Seamless Option offered through the NSLP) served lunch to 2.9 million children on an average day. That may seem like a high number, but it means that only one in six low-income children who ate a school lunch during the regular 2007-08 school year were provided a nutritious meal. This gap is compelling evidence for starting or expanding a summer feeding program in your community.

ScholarshipsSince 1984, SNF has been providing members of SNA with opportunities to explore higher education op-tions. Rising education costs and the growing demand for school nutrition personnel remain the driving force behind SNF’s commitment to help SNA members re-alize their academic dreams. To date we have awarded over $2 million in scholarships. Industry partners can help build the future workforce for school nutrition through named scholarship funds.

Professional DevelopmentSNF supports a rich array of continuing education programs for SNA members and the entire school nutrition community. Professional development is critical not only to those just beginning their career in school nutrition, but also for those seeking to deepen their understanding of the intricacies of school feeding programs. As the school nutrition environment continues to change at a rapid pace, professional development is important to keep both the new as well as the seasoned professional up-to-date. As new, effective practices are developed, SNA members have the opportunity to learn from those practices through professional development. Sponsor-ing professional opportunities can be a way to take new innovative practices to a broader audience.

ResearchSNF plays an integral role in advancing the study of child nutrition and school foodservice by funding SNA research projects. The research efforts of SNA members and others continue to enhance the body of knowledge that informs the members of school boards, school administrators, and school nutrition profes-sionals as decisions are made about providing healthy food to school children. When you partner with SNF to fund research initiatives in school nutrition, you are making a difference in the lives of children today and in the future.

The School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) was founded in 1964 as the sister organization of the School Nutrition Association (SNA) with the purpose of securing financial support to provide education, research and scholarship for SNA and its members. In 2014, SNF celebrated its 50th Anniversary with the renewed commitment to its financial support of SNA as it educates and empowers the men and women who feed millions of children in America every day.

To provide the education and professional development needed by SNA members in a rapidly changing environment, SNF works with individuals, corporations, and foundations to secure the funding needed. Recognizing the role of research in advancing the field of school nutrition, SNF seeks financial

support for the research that will set the direction for the future of school nutrition. The most direct benefit to SNA members comes from the scholarships funded by industry and individuals through SNF.

Supporting the School Nutrition Foundation is providing school nutrition professionals with the skills, insight, and initiative needed to ensure students are well nourished and prepared for success.

Whether through direct contributions to the Foundation or through sponsorship of the 2015 Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes on March 2, 2015, you can assist SNF in its continued efforts to provide financial support for programs beyond member-ship services that will advance the field of school nutrition.

Our MissionThe School Nutrition Foundation provides financial support for education, research and scholarships for the benefit of

School Nutrition Association members.
