A FEW THINGS WE THINK YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT OUR SCHOOL…Central to the educational philosophy of Sacred Heart College is Saint Marcellin Champagnat’s belief that, “to teach children you must first love them and love them all equally”.
The ethos of our school is based on the five pillars of Saint Marcellin Champagnat’s spirituality of Love of Work, Family Spirit, In the Way of Mary, Simplicity and Presence, which means that we nurture values of mutual understanding, respect, tolerance, justice, reconciliation, love and peace.
In the past, this ethos was carried by the Marist Brothers, but with fewer Brothers the task of guarding and maintaining the ethos falls to the leaders and staff of the College, and particularly to the Director of Ethos and Pastoral Care. This is carried out at board level, through management structures, through the Ethos Committee and the Pastoral Care Committee, as well as into the curriculum and spiritual life of the school.
We promote these values in the building of our school community and although we are a Catholic School we foster a sensitivity and deep respect for diverse faiths and cultures.
The Three2Six Education Project for Refugee ChildrenIn 2008, in keeping with the Marist philosophy, Sacred Heart College opened the Three2Six Education Project, aimed at offering a place of hope for refugee children. We use classrooms that are unused between 3pm and 6pm to offer bridging schooling to these deschooled and marginalised children in order to help them to make the transition to mainstream schooling, academically and culturally.Qualified and experienced teachers from refugee and immigrant communities, who are mentored in the South African curriculum by the school, do the teaching. The children get a meal a day, a school uniform, safe transport, holiday activities and psychological support where needed. They also experience a sense of belonging, a positive school climate, opportunities for success, recognition of achievement, and a non-violent environment.
“To bring up young people, Marcellin made correction by light touches, not heavy strokes.”

PACE is a sub-committee of the Sacred Heart College Board of Governors, overseeing the workings of the Parent Association.
We strive to bring parents, students, teachers, and staff together to help build a better and more vibrant school community.
Parents are encouraged to actively participate beyond parent-teacher evenings and diarised school events. We know that the involvement and commitment of our parents is vital to the success of our children.
This booklet presents some of the ways that you can get involved in school life. The options for involvement are many and varied.
There are many initiatives which need parent support, some bigger than others. There is something that will suit your available time, skill or resources.
Take advantage of these and join the network!
We would love to meet you.
