Tauranga’s single problem intersection that has emerged following the change

to the give way rule has been fi xed.A new traffi c island had been added to the

Cambridge Road/ Te Awanui Drive intersec-tion cross hatching and another ‘give way’ sign added.

One commenter on the earlier stories on SunLive suggested the trouble could have been avoided if the NZTA in its lead-up edu-cation programme had emphasised the rules apply only to uncontrolled intersections.

The left turn from Cambridge road onto the Te Awanui Drive on ramp is a controlled intersection governed by a Give Way sign. The give way on the left turn is contrary, and over-rides, the new give way rule that came into

effect last Sunday. The dichotomy confused some drivers, with

neighbours reporting more honking horns and squealing tyres as they sorted themselves out.

As well as shifting the give way sign to a more prominent location, the white line was moved further back, to give the Otumoetai drivers more opportunity to see it.

Any more drastic measures will take longer because of the requirement to consult with the NZTA, says city council transportation manager Martin Parkes.

Cambridge Road is a city street, but the on ramp is part of the highway system and under NZTA authority.

“We are having these discussions at the moment,” says Martin.

New rules cause tweaking

The Hyundai i40 Wagon has held off well-established rivals to take the overall title of Best Estate Car in Business Car Manager’s annual

awards in the UK.

Hyundai is one of the world’s largest and fastest growing

automotive companies. Our reputation is built on the fact that

we are totally dedicated to exceptional quality, driving performance, safety and customer care. That’s certainly the case here at home.

Hyundai New Zealand is 100% locally owned, so as kiwis we are naturally inclined to embrace Hyundai’s new think-ing and pursue new possibilities.

And like the one in the brochure you’re holding now, we only offer vehicles that are ideal for our conditions. So enjoy the jour-ney with us. Your Hyundai will be right at home on your favourite roads. New Zealand roads come with more sudden hills, short straights, winding inclines, steep declines and changing surfaces than just about anywhere. So this is where the stunning new Hyundai i40 Wagon is com-pletely at home.

The i40 Wagon continues the evolu-tion of Hyundai’s fl uidic sculpture design language. And more than just eye-catching

design: the i40 Wagon can be relied on to deliver impressive fuel economy, a power-ful engine with petrol and diesel options, as well as being one of the world’s safest cars on the road.

Make an impressionCombining emotive design with intel-

ligent practicality, the i40 Wagon brings together luxury looks and style with all the substance and performance you demand, whether driving in the city or cruising through the countryside. The i40 Wagon offers uncompromised comfort for driver and passengers yet also presents exceptional versatility in seating, storage and load capacity.

Engineered to exacting standards and built strong with ultra-high tensile strength steel, it provides the highest levels of safety, while leveraging cutting-edge technology to maximise driving ease and the enjoy-ment of every journey.

Elegant and sophisticated, the i40 Wagon commands a striking and individual presence on the road that makes a lasting impression.

Step inside the i40 Wagon and it’s imme-diately clear that the high-level design, workmanship and attention to detail that distinguish the outside have been car-ried through to the interior. Sit down and notice how everything has been thought of.

The driver’s power seat support is adjust-able in ten different directions (Elite only). A deluxe centre armrest is not simply a comfortable place to rest your arm, but also opens up to reveal different storage compartments.

First classEvery instrument, gauge and driving

indicator can be viewed at a glance, and all switches and controls are ergonomically designed and logically placed for ease of use.

The i40 Wagon is available in two new-generation engine choices that both deliver smooth and quietly outstanding driving performance.

Long journeys on our kiwi roads are effortless and when you need to acceler-ate quickly, the i40 Wagon offers a very satisfying level of passing power.

Designed, engineered and built by Hyundai, these engines are small and light-weight, but supremely durable, responsive and produce more power with greater effi ciency.

Designed for NZ roadsIt’s the perfect expression of your individ-

uality and how you prefer to follow your own road. And the i40 Wagon is the most logical way to go. Cabin and cargo space are more than ample, while the interior appointments are fi rst-class.

Powered by our revolutionary U-II diesel or GDi petrol engines and coupled with a new six-speed automatic or manual trans-mission, it has more power through the entire range. It’s quicker, smoother, quieter and more powerful at passing, all while being much, much slower at consuming.

Take all this and attach it to a suspension system specially tuned for New Zealand roads. The i40 Wagon marries form with substance: beneath its alluring exterior are a wealth of high-tech features that substantially enhance safety, comfort and convenience.

A first class experience

ESC – ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROLThe i40 Wagon ESC system, an advanced standard safety feature, helps you remain in control of your vehicle during critical situations to avoid serious accidents. The ESC system achieves this by comparing the driver’s intention with the momentary vehicle behaviour and controls the Anti-lock Braking (ABS) and Traction Control Systems (TCS) accordingly, to initiate the appropriate corrective action by selectively braking individual wheels and controlling engine power.

9

CORNERING BRAKE CONTROLDesigned to distribute braking force to the wheels that need it during braking whilst cornering, Cornering Brake Control (CBC) is a brand new feature in the Hyundai range, which gives you added safety when tackling our winding Kiwi roads.

EMERGENCY STOP SIGNAL (ESS)ESS is an innovative new safety feature that activates all rear lights when your vehicle is under emergency braking, to warn following traffic that you are braking heavily.

STATIC BENDING LIGHTSStatic bending lights are a special technology that registers the angle of the steering wheel and allows the lights to follow the direction of your vehicle on the road. So if you are in a hard right corner, the lights will follow your angle of turn and light up the road ahead.

Mount Maunganui’s Barnes’ family is plan-ning a busy winter after they were presented with the Hyundai Surf Series brand new Hyundai all-wheel drive Santa Fe Elite.

“There’s going to be plenty of trips coming up this winter,” says Owen Barnes. “We’ve got two kids who also surf, so they are into it as well. It is a seven seater, so there might be a few extras.”

The Barnes entered the draw for the Hyundai all-wheel drive Santa Fe Elite, pow-ered by a 145kw R series four cylinder diesel,

while competing in the Hyundai pro long board tour.

“Two family members have to enter the event to go into the draw,’ says Anna Barnes. “Every family that surfs in every event gets an entry in the Hyundai hat.

“It’s a pretty nice experience to have a brand new car.”

“We only get it for a year, ” says Owen. “We use it for a year, then we give it back.”

Owen competed in the open section, Anna

in the women’s event. Hyundai New Zealand has been the major supporter and title spon-sor of the National Surfi ng Championships for seven years as part of its long standing partnership with Surfi ng New Zealand.

As well as the Nationals, Hyundai New Zea-land also supports the longboarding and stand up paddleboard events as part of the Hyundai Tour, which ran from January to March.

A year’s use of the vehicle is been a popu-

lar event prize during the seven years of Hyundai’s surf sponsorship, says Hyundai NZ general manager Andy Sinclair.

“If they want to buy it, we will sell it no problem,” says Andy.

Otherwise the returned vehicles go into the Hyundai dealer fl eet, where there is a shortage of second hand vehicles.

Experienced advanced driving instructor Mark Revill-Johnson has changed lanes,

after a 27-year career in the police, with his new business RVC Driving.

He’s taken over The Driving School of Tauranga from local instructor Bobbie Ander-son.

Mark says advanced driving training and 13-years instructor experience gives him the perfect background for his driving courses. Along with training for learner and restricted licence drivers, RVC Driving offers motorcyclist courses from introductory to advanced levels and Fleet driver risk reduction training.

He says his advanced driving course is similar to defensive driving, but based on practical training rather than theory. The course draws from the British police’s ‘Roadcraft’ manual – using the system of car control, identifying hazards and formulating a driving plan so you have time to react .

“You will be taken to a new level. It is not about speed, it is about making progress in a skilful, responsible way.”

“There are things that people don’t always perceive that if they register can help them be less flustered at the end of the journey.”

Sun Media photographer Tracy Hardy road-tested what Mark is offering on his advanced driving course, describing it as a valuable experi-ence.

During an hour session she initially drove around while Mark watched, before swapping as he drove in similar situations – demonstrat-ing changes he would make. He then talked about everything he was observing in his wider field of vision and described how he adjusted his driving for risks he saw.

“It makes you think a lot more about not just what’s on the road but what’s happening around the road and the need to be prepared for potential hazards.” By Hamish Carter

A 16-strong contingent of Bay of Plenty Blokarters has fl own out to the US to protect the region’s name as the international heart of the sport this weekend.

Blokart inventor and managing director Paul Beckett is among those taking part in the Blokart World Championships being held at the Ivanpah Dry Lake Bed in Nevada over the next week, and says the pressure is on the local contingent.

Accounting for almost half of the 35-strong Kiwi competitors, he says the Western Bay racers were determined to bring home their fair share of the silver.

“We’ve got (New Zealand) about 20 per cent of the competitors so we are expecting at least 20 per cent of the titles, and we’ve got a lot of great local talent who have a fair chance,” says Paul who will be defending his top super-heavy weight ranking from others – including Tauranga racer Theo Vondervoort who has is ranked second.

Paul says it will be no walk in the park for the area’s many top racers who will be up against some of their fi ercest competitors among large contingents from Spain and the US.

“The Spanish they are the fantastic - they are passionate about it.”

He says the blokarters would have to get used to the more open sailing of the lake bed, which will include large scale tactical races like an America’s Cup match with up-wind tacking and down-wind sailing, compared to the tighter format of beach racing.

“We are doing just over 100kmh when we are cranking – it’s pretty scary.”

Blokarters competing from the Western Bay are Duncan Wiggins, Paul Beckett, Don McKenzie, Matt Beckett, Peter Sheaff, Ted McDonald, Andrew Sands, Allen Rogers, Theo Vondervoort, Colin Davidson, Debs Davidson, Leo Fitzgerald, Luke Jones, Angus Young, Gordon Browne and Gabe Young.

“It’s a lot of fun.”He says the club is not just about “old buggers

These members are part of the some 80,000 comrades world-wide. The club includes the classic Mercedes-Benz, those manufactured in the 1950s to the newest models.

Italian car lovers are in for a treat next weekend when

30 Ferraris will be displayed outside a local restaurant in a

cancer charity fundraiser.

Famed Tauranga AC/DC member Phil Rudd will join the have two of his Ferraris on display, including his 1990 F40 and his 599, while Auck-land dealer Continental Car Services will be bringing down two of the latest 2012 models – a Californian and an FF.

The event, which has been organised by Phil’s Place restaurant manager Daniel Rodgers-Purdie, will raise money for ‘Look Good Feel Better’. The cancer organisa-tion helps more than 3000 women a year with its free “pick me up” workshops for women recovering from surgery.

Daniel says he has been a long-time supporter of the charity and it was great to be able to use Phil’s venue and connections to raise awareness and funds.

He says it is not just a car show, but a big family event with lots of fun activities taking place including a bouncy castle for children.

“Phil is absolutely passionate about his cars – especially his Ferraris, and he is excited to be able to combine his love of cars with his other love, his restaurant, all for a great cause.”

Phil is encouraging families to visit the marina and support the charity.

“Make the most of this opportu-nity to view the incredible Ferrari’s on display, and enjoy a bite to eat.”

She bought one, and she was hooked.Judy Leggett has been a motorhome

fanatic since 1976, owning countless motorhomes and actively involving herself in the motorhoming community. She’ll be recognised this weekend for her enthusiasm, marking 35 years member-ship in the New Zealand Motorhome and Campervan Association at the 56th Annual NZMCA AGM and National Rally.

Judy will join around 1400 other enthusiasts from around the country at Baypark from midday Thursday, with 750 motorhomes and caravans expected.

The weekend will include various activities for the gathered motorhomers, but on Easter Sunday, Baypark will be open to the public from 10am-4pm for

trade exhibits, a craft market, quilt show (with gold coin donations going to char-ity), and a pet show, with Tauranga MP Simon Bridges as judge.

Judy is most excited to catch up with her friends in the motorhoming com-munity.

“It’s a fantastic way of life. NZMCA is a great family organisation, with lots of camaraderie, and you really make friends for life, from all over the country.”

Judy says she has travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand thanks to motorhoming, and she and her husband will often spend the entire summer in their home away from home.

“I just couldn’t give it up. Once you’re a motorhomer, you’re always a motorhomer.”

Judy Leggett enjoys the comfort of her

motorhome.
