About the Artists

Bellevue Chamber Chorus consists of professional and avocational musicians of diverse back-grounds, performing choral literature with varied accompaniment from all musical periods. Throughout its 27-year history, the Chorus has collaborated with other vocal and instrumental musicians of all ages, as well as dance troupes and visual artists, to present major works or unu-sual repertoire, including specially commissioned pieces by local composers such as Alan Hovhaness and John Muehleisen. For the past thirteen years, Bellevue Chamber Chorus has joined with the Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra for a Baroque chamber-style performance of Handel’s complete Messiah during the holiday season. The Chorus also performs for events such as the Argosy Christmas Ship, galas and other community activities, has performed twice at the Leavenworth Choral Festival, and was selected as one of the regional participants in the Ameri-can Masterpieces Choral Festival in Seattle in 2007. In July 2008, the Chorus was awarded first prize in the Adult Mixed Choir division at the prestigious Kathaumixw International Choral Festival in Powell River, B.C. Other performances include New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Salz-burg, Austria Church Music Festival, the International Choral Festival in Sydney, Australia, and festival concerts in spectacular venues in Switzerland, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic. The Chorus has released two CDs: "Timeframes” and “Retrospective”, and is planning a third CD of music from the “Winter Visions, Christmas Dreams” concert performed earlier this season.

The Bellevue Chamber Chorus is a non-profit organization, which receives its support from the generous donations of people interested in fine musical experiences on the Eastside.

Conductor of collegiate, community, and church choirs in Minnesota, California, and the Seat-tle area for over twenty years, Dr. Fredrick Lokken is in his eleventh season as music director and conductor of the Bellevue Chamber Chorus. Under his direction the Chorus has gained a growing reputation for exciting performances of diverse and innovative programs from the tradi-tional classics to contemporary music from around the world. He received his doctoral degree in choral conducting from the University of Washington, where he studied under Abraham Kaplan and Joan Conlon. He has done further study with renowned choral conductors Joseph Flummer-felt, Helmuth Rilling, and Jon Washburn, and spent several years in The Netherlands doing choral research and writing. Dr. Lokken also holds a degree in vocal performance from the University of Wisconsin and sang with the professional Dale Warland Singers. In addition to his work with the Bellevue Chamber Chorus, Dr. Lokken serves as Director of Choral Music and Instructor of Voice at Shoreline Community College.

Andy Carr, piano, Dennis Staskowski, bass, and Don Berman, drums, have been performing together in the Seattle area for 15 years. Andy and Don first hooked up in 1981, while ‘gigging’ in adjacent Pioneer Square jazz clubs. Dennis came on the music scene in the mid-1990s, having first earned his degree in instrumental performance from the University of Washington. The trio enjoys its frequent collaborations with Bellevue Chamber Chorus and other regional vocal groups, as well as the occasional club appearance or private party. Individually, the guys enjoy eclectic music pursuits. Andy has been a pianist in Seattle jazz and swing bands since 1979, as well as accompanist for many vocalists, choirs, and musical thea-tre productions. He maintains a busy schedule performing jazz with BlueStreet Jazz Voices; tango with the Tangoheart Quartet; and choir accompaniment at The Overlake School in Red-mond. Dennis performs, records, and tours with numerous Northwest ensembles, in styles ranging from classical (Bellevue Symphony, New Chamber Orchestra, etc.) to jazz and world music (Seattle Creative Music Orchestra, One Hand Clapping, Opera Jupiter, and lots of other great groups). Don migrated to the Northwest after earning music and percussion performance degrees at Oberlin College and the University of Illinois. Here in the Seattle, he has performed with many of the area's top jazz musicians. His broad musical foundation has led to an eclectic varie-ty of performances in jazz, blues, theaters, and choirs. Most recently he has been leading his own jazz group, DBQ (the Don Berman Quartet), as well as performing extensively in the Se-attle free jazz / creative music scene. He co-leads the imaginative group Ronin, with saxopho-nist Kenny Mandell.
