BC DISPATCH
FEBRUARY 2019 BEAR CREEK HIGH SCHOOL
9800 West Dartmouth Place Lakewood, CO 80236 (303) 982-8855 Dear Parents/Guardians:
Second semester is already flying by! We are grateful for the partnership we have with you in support of your student (s). In continuing this strong partnership, we would love to have you attend our Parent/Teacher Conferences evening on Wednesday February 27th from 4:00-8:00pm.
We have begun the process of planning and preparing for next school year. Students are engaged in the process of registering for classes and should keep in mind their ICAP (graduation plan) as they make their choices. We recently held our 8th Grade Information Night to share our academic, athletic, and activity programs with prospective families. We are very excited to welcome another fantastic group of 9th graders into our Bear Family this August.
As new Bears prepare to enter the halls of Bear Creek, we will be celebrating another wonderful group of seniors that have started their final semester with us. These seniors should be working closely with their counselors and parents to ensure that they remain on track for graduation in May. Should a student fail to earn the required core credits for graduation, they will need to arrange make-up credit through on-line, night school, summer school, and/or correspondence courses. Bear Creek has many intervention structures to support students should they find themselves in need of help. Reaching the goal of graduation is a coordinated effort between home and school and your involvement is greatly respected and appreciated!
We are excited to continue developing the culture and climate at Bear Creek High School. This past week we were able to host our Breaking Down the Walls program. Breaking Down the Walls for High School students is a program designed to unify, empower, and engage every student to create a positive and supportive campus culture. We were able to engage over 300 students in this amazing opportunity. We would like to thank our Bear Creek High School PTSA for their generous support of the program. Their donation helped make this program a reality.
The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) recently released their School Performance Framework (SPF) for the 2017-18 school year. I am proud to announce that Bear Creek High School earned a “Performance” ranking once again. You may view the report at this link: https://cedar2.cde.state.co.us/documents/SPF2018/1420-0664-1-Year-Official.pdf
Congrats to students, families, and staff for all of their hard work!!
Sincerely,
Mr. Lynn Torr Principal Bear Creek High School 303-982-8727

COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION (CDE) SCHOOL PERFORMANCE FRAMEWORKS
State Accreditation is the Colorado Department
of Education's annual accreditation assessment report for
school districts. The accreditation process is a
comprehensive system which reviews many performance
indicators in school districts, including academic
achievement and growth for students in reading, writing,
math, and science.
CDE’s District Performance Framework (“DPF”)
and School Performance Framework (“SPF”) reports
provide information about the levels of attainment in each
of the four key performance indicators:
Academic Achievement
Academic Longitudinal Growth
Postsecondary Workforce Readiness (high school only).
For districts, the overall evaluation leads to their
accreditation.
For schools, the overall evaluation leads to the
type of plan schools will implement.
DISTRICT ACCREDITATION AND SCHOOL
PLAN CATEGORIES The District Performance Framework (DPF) assigns to
each district one of five accreditation categories:
1) Accredited with Distinction: The district
meets or exceeds statewide attainment on the
performance indicators and is required to adopt
and implement a Performance Plan.
2) Accredited: The district meets statewide
attainment on the performance indicators and is
required to adopt and implement a Performance
Plan.
3) Accredited with Improvement Plan: The
district is required to adopt and implement an
Improvement Plan.
4) Accredited with Priority Improvement
Plan: The district is required to adopt and
implement a Priority Improvement Plan.
5) Accredited with Turnaround Plan: The
district is required to adopt and implement a
Turnaround Plan.
Jeffco Schools is Accredited and is assigned a
Performance Plan.
The School Performance Framework (SPF) assigns to
each school one of four plan types:
1) Performance Plan: The school meets or
exceeds statewide attainment on the performance
indicators and is required to adopt and implement
a Performance Plan.
2) Improvement Plan: The school is required to
adopt and implement an Improvement Plan.
3) Priority Improvement Plan: The school is
required to adopt and implement a Priority
Improvement Plan.
4) Turnaround Plan: The school is required to
adopt and implement a Turnaround Plan.
The SPF for Bear Creek High School assigns our
school a Performance Plan.
For additional information on accreditation, please
contact Lynn Torr, Principal, Bear Creek High School.
Additional information is available at
www.cde.state.co.us/schoolview.
2017-2018 DISTRICT ANNUAL REPORT AVAILABLE Each year, state and federal law requires school
districts to publish an annual report to provide parents and the community with information about performance. Jeffco’s document talks about student achievement, how the taxpayer’s money is spent for education and highlights of the year’s activities. The federal “No Child Left Behind” law and the Colorado Department of Education specify that certain information must be included in the annual report, such as assessment and accountability data, and information about the qualification of the district’s teachers. In addition, Jeffco Public Schools Strategic
Planning and Advisory Council, a citizens advisory group, also provides details about its activities for the year.
A copy of the 2017-2018 Jeffco Public Schools
Annual Report to the Community can be obtained at any school or viewed online at: http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/about/publications/annual_reports.
The Colorado Department of Education also
provides information for parents about school performance online at: http://www.schoolview.org.
UPDATE SCHOOL CONTACT INFORMATION
During registration this school year, parents completed contact information for their students in
Jeffco Connect, the school district’s online student information system. The contact information allows
the school to contact parents, guardians and care-givers about emergencies and other important school-
related issues. Parents should now log on to Jeffco Connect to review this information and make any
necessary updates so the school will have up-to-date contact information. Parents can log on to Jeffco
Connect at:
http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/jeffco_connect/index.html.
Parents should also ensure that the school can contact them through School Messenger, the
emergency contact system. Please log on to School Messenger and review the account settings to ensure
that the message settings have not been blocked. Log on at:
http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/schoolmessenger/index.html
BEAR CREEK HIGH SCHOOL’S POLICY REGARDING VAPE DEVICES AND
VAPING
At Bear Creek High School, using or possessing any and all vaping devices on school grounds
(inside or outside the building) is a violation of school and district policy and they should NOT be
brought to school for any reason. The penalty for violating this policy includes confiscation of the vaping
device and/or any associated paraphernalia; it may also include suspension and/or referral to law
enforcement. Once a vaping device or associated paraphernalia are confiscated, they will not be returned
for any reason.
Should a student be assigned in-school suspension, we require them to take a digital class that
provides important health-safety information regarding nicotine and vaping. This course acts as a resource
to further examine short and long term consequences of continued use. Additionally, students are also
referred to a Tobacco Cessation support group.
Attention Parents! We need your help!
For many years, Bear Creek High School has been able to support an After Prom
event following Prom to create an environment where students can continue to
celebrate this milestone safely. In more recent years, we have seen a massive decline in
attendance and support of the program for various reasons ranging from cost to
interest to parent support. This fall we put out and widely promoted a survey to all
students regarding interest and feedback for After Prom and we only received 53
responses, total.
Of these responses, only 44 students mentioned they had any interest in
attending After Prom this year, and a large majority of responses indicated that they
would prefer the event NOT be held at the high school. While many of these students
indicated that they attended After Prom last year, a great many of them also indicated
that they stayed no more than an hour or so.
In light of all this information, we are at a bit of a crossroads with After Prom as a
whole. While it is certainly a positive endeavor (many of us experienced it in our own
way when we were in school), we have mixed feelings about the amount of time,
coordination, and cost it takes to execute After Prom relative to the number of kids that
attend and how long they stay. All things considered, if we have a very low turnout for
After Prom this coming spring, we may consider discontinuing After Prom in the future.
With regards to this year, however, we are attempting to push forward with After
Prom (likely at an external venue). That being said, we need the help of parents to
make it happen. While the program is supported by BCHS, it is entirely planned and run
by parents and WE NEED VOLUNTEERS or it is at risk of not happening. If you are
interested in being the coordinator this year or you would be interested in volunteering,
please email Jose Martinez at [email protected] or call him at 303-982-8776 so
we can begin the process ASAP, as prom is only a few months away. Thank you for your
consideration.

The most recent Youth Risk Behavior Survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that Colorado leads the nation in the youth use of vapor products, known as vape or e-cigarettes.
The infographic above is from the Healthy Kids Colorado Survey 2017. This survey of 56,000 Colorado teens showed that 44% of our teens have tried e-cigarettes. Even more overwhelming, it revealed that 27% of students use vape devices regularly. More information at https://www.colorado.gov/cdphe/hkcs.
