Drive to find more child mentors By TRACY NEAL - The Nelson Mail 23/06/2010

COLIN SMITH/Nelson MailSUPPORTING ROLE: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Nelson programme director Gavin Millar flies a kite with Allan, whom he mentors.

Nelson mentoring programme, Big Brothers Big Sisters, is targeting staff from the city's larger businesses and organisations in an effort to recruit new mentors. Programme director Gavin Millar has made a plea to the Nelson City Council for staff to volunteer as mentors, and is working to develop the programme with staff at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides mentoring friendships to young people in need of adult support. Since the first match up in Nelson was made in 1998, more than 250 young people have been matched with a mentor in Nelson.

Mr Millar said the programme was looking to expand into Nelson schools, and the aim was to take on between 20 and 30 new mentors. Right now the programme needed help for a waiting list of 40 young people, mainly boys.

"The demand is for good men – we are in the market for good men," Mr Millar told councillors.

He said several existing mentors had been with the programme for 12 years, and had decided to bow out.

Mr Millar said most mentoring relationships lasted up to two years, and required little more time than an hour each week during school term working with a young person at a local school. "I mentor a seven year-old, and his biggest thing is playing snakes and ladders," Mr Millar said.

Mentoring requires a 12-month commitment to a young person and the school, on the same day each week and monthly contact with a mentoring co-ordinator at Big Brothers Big Sisters. All mentors are screened, trained, matched and supervised, Mr Millar said.

The young people are children aged between seven and 10 who have been identified by the school as needing extra adult support and friendship. The mentor and the young person are matched based on similar interests.

"Most just need a boost in their self-esteem from someone who cares and is there for them. The key to a successful match is consistency and having fun," Mr Millar said.

Schools provide a resource box of activities and ideas, ranging from puzzles to card games, reading stories, craftwork, painting and drawing, or just chatting together or having a picnic.

Adults interested in becoming a mentor can contact Gavin Millar at 035459864, or email [email protected]
