NAPLAN

In a few short weeks our Year 3 & 5 students will be participating in this year‟s National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

What is it?

At our school, it is for all students in Year 3 and 5, except for those who are granted an exemption.

The tests are in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy.

When are the Tests Held?

The tests are scheduled for the mornings of:

Tuesday, 12 May 2015 – Language conventions (40 minutes) and writing (40 minutes).

Wednesday, 13 May 2015 – Year 3 reading (45 minutes). Year 5 reading (50 minutes).

Thursday, 14 May 2015 – Year 3 Numeracy (45 Minutes). Year 5 Numeracy (50 Minutes).

Friday, 15 May 2015 – Catch up day if required.

Test Format.

Writing: The students will be given a stimulus/prompt. In response to this the students write either a Narrative or Persuasive Text. The genre is not disclosed until the test begins. There will not be a choice of genre.

Language conventions, reading and Numeracy: In these tests most questions will require either a multiple-choice response (shade a bubble to indicate the answer) or a constructed response (write the answer in a box or on a line).

What are the Test Results used for?

The tests are designed to assess the skills of Australian students in Literacy and Numeracy.

To report to parents/carers and schools as well as for systematic reporting.

2015 NAPLAN Student Reports will be delivered to schools in August 2015.

It is very important to note that the NAPLAN tests are designed to complement the regular as-sessments made by class teachers over the year.

In Term Four of 2014 last year, teachers examined the NAPLAN results from 2014 and previous years to identify trends and patterns as well as areas of need in regard to improving student per-formance. Teachers then used this information, plus other in class assessment results, to base the development of their Term Four 2014 and 2015 Literacy and Numeracy learning programs.

Class Based Preparation for Year 3 and 5 Students.

Essentially use an approach of “familiarisation” rather “teaching to the test” to prepare our Year 3 and 5 students.

General Approach: Teachers of our Year 3 and 5 students will:

Ensure “test literacy” for all students so that they are familiar with the test format, how ques-tions are constructed and the wording used, how to tackle multiple choice question, how to seek answers with in questions, and so on.

Undertake lessons, where they will complete a full practice test in each area. The main idea behind this is to give students the experience of the physical test conditions (desks separated, silence, individual work only, and so on). This will include explicit “timed” activity practice in test completion, especially writing tasks.

Explain clearly and simply the procedures (timing, seating, equipment, and so on) of each test session.

Do some activities that explicitly teach the skills needed to complete the test eg: sustained un-interrupted writing sessions, writing within a given time frame, re-reading questions carefully, reviewing answers when finished etc.

Let students know how they will be assessed and expose them to the marking criteria rubric.

Support students through the use of NAPLAN type question formats and styles as part of the teaching sequence in the Literacy and Numeracy Blocks.

Encourage all students, especially Year 3 and first time students, to „have a go‟. Not set NAPLAN homework.

Year K, PP, 1, 2, 4 and 6 Students:

It is expected that the non NAPLAN Years: K, PP, 1, 2, 4 and 6 will continue with their normal learning programs leading up to and during the test period. They will not be involved in any NAPLAN preparation tasks.

How Can Parents/Carers Help?

It would be great if parents/ carers support what we are doing at school and follow a similar pathway.

In reality the best thing parents/carers can do is to maintain normal routines, a positive view towards the tests, encourage their child to do their best and ensure they have a good night’s sleep and a sensible breakfast before coming to school on the day of the tests.

If you need any help or any advice about NAPLAN issues - please contact Mr Dave Dique our NAPLAN Coordinator.

School Photos

School photos will happen on Wednesday, 29 April 2015. The official order forms were sent home with students on Tuesday, 21 April 2015. Please return a completed order form with each child on Wednesday 29 April to hand to the Kapture photographer. Orders can be placed online, go to www.kapture.com.au and use the online code 5AKALS.

2015 In-Term Swimming Lessons This year‟s In- Term Swimming Lessons will be held this term, commencing Monday, 18

May. The lessons are for Years 1-6

students. The lessons go over a 2 week period. More information regarding the lessons will be sent out in the coming week.

Whiteman Park Whole School Excursion

The school will be holding this year‟s whole school excursion at Whiteman Park on Friday 8 May 2015. The excursion will

involve all Kindergarten to Year Six students. The bus will leave school at 9.30am and return by approximately 2.30pm. The

cost of the excursion is $7. Please sign and return the consent form and medical excursion form to your classroom teacher

with payment by 9am Monday 4 May 2015.

Students will need to wear school uniform, comfortable walking shoes (sneakers) and a sun-safe hat (wide-brimmed).

Students will need to bring a recess snack, lunch and a water bottle. We would appreciate if the food containers/wrappers are

as waste free as possible. A picnic style lunch is scheduled for 12pm at Mussel Pool.

We are inviting parents/carers to join us at Whiteman park for the day, however parents/carers will need to make their own

way to Whiteman park as there is not enough space on the buses to accommodate everyone.

Notes and Consent Forms have been sent home. If you have not received any forms please ask your classroom teacher or

collect a copy from the front office. If you would like any further clarification please contact the school on 9370 2465.

Organisation and Planning for 2016

The school has commenced the process of planning for the 2016 school year. One of the vital ingredients in this process is to have an accurate picture of potential student numbers. To help with this, we have set up the following process to gather this information.

2016 Enrolments Kindergarten

Enrolments for our Kindergarten Program for 2016 are now open.

Parents who would like to apply for a place for their child are asked to complete an Application for Enrolment Form.

These forms are available at the school office. Please contact the school (9370 2465) if you would like a form sent to you.

The closing date for these to be submitted to the school is Friday, 24 July 2015 (Term 3, Wk 1).

Parents should receive a letter accepting or declining their application by Friday, 21 August 2015 (Wk 5,Term 3). Pre-primary

Parents of our currently enrolled Kindergarten students who wish them to attend Bayswater Primary School in 2016 as Pre-primary students are asked to contact Mrs Janine Turner to indicate their intention on (9370 2465) or email her on: [email protected]

Parents of children, who are not currently enrolled, who would like to apply for a place for their child in our Pre-primary program for 2016 at Bayswater Primary School are also asked to contact Mrs Janine Turner by phone or e-mail.

Parents are asked to have done this by Friday, 24 July 2015 (Term 3 Wk 1). Year 1 to 5

Parents of our currently enrolled Year 1 to 5 students who intend enrolling their child in a program at a school other than Bayswater Primary School for 2016 are asked to contact Mrs Janine Turner by phone or e-mail as soon as practical.

If you need more information or clarification of any of the above please contact Mrs Janine Turner by phone or e-mail.

P&C News

Presidents Message The P&C Committee met ahead of the school term commencing on Monday night. Great to see a large turnout for this meeting and there was some great discussion across a range of topics.

I think the most exciting part of the meeting was hearing from the Gardening Committee and their preliminary plans for the Junior Playground area. There has been some amazing work already completed to conceptualise some thoughts on what might be achievable. The P&C wants teachers, parents, students and the wider community to be part of the process. A blog has been set up to guide things along: https://bpsplaygrounds.wordpress.com/

Give it a look, have a voice, get involved. There are going to be plenty of opportunities for everyone‟s input and involvement over the coming months. I should also note the P&C‟s appreciation, not only to the members of the Gardening Committee but particularly to Eleanor Reuvers, the landscape architect who has already prepared the „Site Analysis‟ and will be preparing the concept plans as they develop. She‟s only a new parent to the school, but has already jumped aboard with her valuable time and expertise.

I should also thank Claire Baker for coming along on Monday night, particularly given everything else she was juggling that night. She and Kura Perkins are doing an amazing job with this year‟s Fete coordination. The class „activities‟ have been allocated and we‟re already receiving expressions of interest from businesses to be part of the day. If you have an idea about businesses that might want a stall on the day, please get in touch with Claire, Kura or the P&C generally.

Fundraising and other activities continue throughout the year, but we really need more involvement across the wider school community to make things really happen. Even an hour of your time here and there will make a huge difference and will mean the responsibilities don‟t keep falling to the same individuals each time.

On this note, BPS is also still chasing a Safety House representative. At the moment, there are no BPS Safety Houses and as a result, it would seem inappropriate to promote the programme to our children. If you are interested in being part of this initiative and re-starting this important programme, please get in touch. I look forward to seeing you at the next P&C meeting.

Andrew Mack P&C President (mbl: 0402 029 244)

Entertainment Books The P&C are selling Entertainment Books. Every membership we sell raises $13 towards our fund-raising. The more Memberships we sell, the more we raise – so please tell your family, friends and work colleagues so we can make this a

successful fundraiser. To order your book or digital membership online visit https://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/8607f8 or use the order form which will be coming home with your child. Contact Stephanie Baily

0435 001 245 or email [email protected] for further clarification.

The BPS Gardening Committee Has a Blog The BPS gardening committee now has a blog – www.bpsplaygrounds.wordpress.com. The blog showcases ideas and plans for the school‟s outdoor spaces, as well as identifying the resources, equipment and expertise we need.

Most importantly though, the blog is a way you can share your ideas and comment on ours. There are comment sections at the bottom of each page, so please, hop on and let us know what you think.

Liz McQueen and Alex Ellis, Gardening Committee co-ordinators.

Fete 2015 Planning for the 2015 Bayswater Primary School fete has begun with the date set for Sunday November 1, 10am to 3pm. The theme this year is “Come Together” reflecting the school‟s community spirit.

We are still seeking interest for people to be involved in running the white elephant / bric-a-brac stall. We would also welcome any ideas on new stalls for the fete. Please contact Kura ([email protected]) or Claire ([email protected]) if you would like to be involved.

Would you like to be added to the P&C email list? Please email us at [email protected] and we will make sure you are added and kept informed of P&C correspondence including meeting agendas and minutes.

Meetings Our next P&C meeting for the year is on Monday 18 May at 7.30pm in the staff room. If you have any suggestions for how the P&C can help the BPS community in 2015, or any ideas for fundraising we would welcome your attendance and input.

Do You Have Unused Objects That Would Make an Interesting Planter?

The Pre-primary classrooms are looking for objects that can be used as planters as part of a veranda area update. We are specifically looking for interesting objects that can be up-cycled. Some examples are kettles, strainers, gumboots, toy dump trucks and cars. Clean out your cupboards and sheds or keep your eyes open when browsing the op-shops. Please bring any items to the Pre-primary classrooms. We are open to all ideas, so let your imagination run wild!

ANZAC Day Ceremony

Thank you to the officers of the Special Air Service Regiment for visiting our school and speaking to our students about some of the history of the ANZACs, here is some of what our guest speaker had to say.

“I‟d like to start with a question? “What is ANZAC Day?” ANZAC Day is about honouring an incredible group of Australian and New Zealand soldiers. The Anzacs are known as the men who made the ultimate sacrifice by laying down their

lives and forged what is known as the great Australian spirit. They fought for this great country and will forever be remembered as great Australian and New Zealand heroes.

“I‟d like to tell you a story, not about a person but a horse. A great big chestnut gelding named Bill. He was 16 hands high and earned quite a famous reputation for bucking riders off his back. Bill‟s spirit became hugely important during a crisis in the battle of Romani– where the Australian Light Horse fought in the battle for the Suez Canal. Australia charged into fight with soldiers on horseback. A fierce battle was raging between them and the Turks, in the middle of the night, with the two sides just 35 metres apart. The Australian were under fierce attack.

A section of five troopers saw their horses fall or flee– with one exception, Bill– he didn‟t bolt with the other horses. Bill stood his ground, almost as if he knew he was the section‟s last hope of escape. Three troopers hurried across the sand scrambled onto Bill, praying he would not buck them off. However, instead of complaining about his load, Bill stood firm. The remaining two troopers balanced on a stirrup on each side of the huge horse, and hung on as best they could.

The mighty horse dug his hooves into the soft sand, snorted and sweated in a lumbering gallop for just over one kilometre under heavy machinegun fire, carrying the five soldiers to safety. Bill showed great bravery and loyalty by standing his ground. He was an

inspiration to the men that he had saved.

Just like Bill, people who do extraordinary things are an inspiration to those around them.”
