BatSU ANNUAL REPORT 2008BatSU ANNUAL REPORT 2008
The College of Arts and Sciences has consistently
taken cognizance of the Universitys mandate in the areas
of instruction, research, extension service and production.
Thus, in FY 2008, every faculty member was given ample
opportunities for continuing education, and the honing of
skills and expertise through increased participation in
training workshops, seminars, conferences and other
similar activities which are essential to the delivery of
quality and relevant education. Evidently, the instructors
performed well in their teaching assignments which easily
translate to highly commendable student performance in
government licensure examinations and outstanding
achievements in academic and extra-curricular activities in
and out of the University.
In the area of research, a growing number of CAS
instructors presented their studies in international,
national and regional fora. To date, there are 15 ongoing
researches and 12 research proposals. The researches
conducted by both faculty members and students address
issues and concerns that are consistent with the thrusts
enunciated in the CAS Five-Year Strategic Plan and the
Universitys research priorities. Equally important is the
fact that research findings have helped enrich instruction in the
College and were also utilized as bases for extension service
projects. Evidently, the researches conducted by CAS instructors
have contributed immensely in enlivening the Universitys
research function.
To add a deeper humanizing dimension to the learning
process, instructors and students alike engaged in extension
service activities in poor and marginalized communities
throughout Batangas province and its neighboring environs. The
programs rendered have been numerous as they were varied.
These included immersions in depressed barangays, instructional
broadcast series, school-on-the-air programs, tutorials,
information education campaigns/seminars on environmental/
waste management, disaster and explosive incident
management, entrepreneurship and livelihood projects, youth
leadership, pro-life value orientation, legal rights and
responsibilities, gender and development, good governance
and health and nutrition.
Linkages with international research and advocacy
institutions, business, management and media agencies as well
as government and non-government organizations have been
strengthened and expanded to ensure that students get the best
on-the-job training in their areas of specialization.

The College got its acts together in
producing positive results evidenced by the
throng of on-going projects related to the four
areas of Instruction, Research, Extension
and Production.
In the area of Research, the College has
an on-going research paper entitled Feedback of
BSU Graduates (2003-07) on the CABEIHM
Curriculum. The questionnaire had already
undergone face and with content validation and
a dry run will soon be made to test the reliability
of the items. The project was initiated by the
Dean to determine whether the skills and
competencies the College provides for the
students, are relevant to their needs and the
requirements of other stakeholders in the
different industries.
A feasibility study on the establishment
and operation of caf and restaurant in the
Industrial Teacher Education (ITE) building was
recently prepared. This is a joint project of BSU
and the Department of Labor and Employment
(DOLE) and implementation will be on the early
part of 2009.
Likewise, a feasibility study on the setting
up of a review center for Accountancy is already
in the pipeline ready for submission to CHED.
The three departments of the College
Accountancy, Business & International
Hospitality Management prepared their
respective research proposals which will be
undertaken starting this 2nd semester of school
year 2008-2009.
For the Extension area, technical
assistance was given to a group of women
residing in Barangay Maruklap were they taught
how to invest a small business and were given
training in bookkeeping. The College provided
them a machine for their livelihood projects.
Prior to the licensure examination, an in-house review
was conducted among graduating accountancy
students, on February and March, 2008. Reviewers
from Manila were tapped to handle the seven (7) CPA
board subjects.
In September, the College hurdled the scrutiny of
the accreditors from the Accrediting Agency of Chartered
Colleges & Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP). The
College passed the evaluation made by the prestigious
agency and awarded the Candidate Status for Level I in
two programs Business Administration (five majors:
Business Economics, Financial Management, Operation
Management, Human Resource Management and
Marketing Management) & Accountancy. In July of the
current year, the same programs will have their first
Formal Survey in addition to two other programs,
Tourism Management and Hotel & Restaurant
Management will also have its Preliminary Survey.
Last October and November, we had an audience
with the out-of-school youth (OSY) of the different
municipalities in Batangas and Mindoro. The faculty
members spent extra time to be with this underserved
sector to emphasize to them the importance of going
back to school and receiving a college diploma.
The students were also able to prove their mettle
in non-academic activities. The CABEIHM Chorale
placed second in the school category of the annual
Christmas Choral Competition sponsored by Vivere
Hotel-Alabang, December 17, 2008.
The School of Accountancy, Business &
Economics (SABE) has grown bigger and better with the
addition of the School of International Hospitality
Management. The proposal to change its name and
status was approved by the Board of Regents
(Resolution No. 85, dated May 26, 2008) on its 18th
regular meeting held at Tandang Sora Function Room,
Sulo Hotel in Diliman Quezon City. SABE is now
CABEIHM (College of Accountancy, Business, Economics
& International Hospitality Management.
