In 28 seasons as head coach at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Brian Baptiste has seen his teams earn a reputation as being among the best NCAA Division III teams in the nation.

His career record of 533-238 speaks for itself. He also serves as an Assistant Director of Athletics at UMD.Baptiste’s teams have qualified for post-season play on 19 occasions, including 13 appearances in the NCAA Divi-sion III Tournament. The Corsairs have won 13 Little East Conference regular season championships and 11 post-season playoff titles in the 24-year history of the conference.

Baptiste’s teams have posted winning records 23 times, and were just a game under .500 on three other occa-sions.Four seasons ago, the Corsairs won their first 20 games, were the last NCAA Division III men’s basketball team in the nation to lose a regular season game, and finished the regular season with a 23-2 mark. Ranked as high as second nationally during the season, they won the Little East Conference regular season championship, hosted the post-season tournament, and earned one of five byes in the NCAA Division III Championships, advanc-ing to the second round of the tournament and finishing with a 25-4 overall mark. Senior center Dan Holbrook earned All-American honors, and Baptiste was named 2007-08 Little East Conference Coach of the Year.

In 2000-2001, UMass Dartmouth went 25-3 and led all NCAA Division III teams in wins. Baptiste was named the Little East Coach of the Year, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches Chevrolet Northeast District Coach of the Year. UMass Dartmouth won both the LEC regular season and tournament titles, qualified for the NCAA Divi-sion III Tournament, and advanced to the Sweet 16. The following season, the Corsairs went 21-8, and went on to win the ECAC Tournament championship.

UMass Dartmouth has advanced to the NCAA Division III Northeast Region championship game four times, win-ning the regional title in both 1986 and again in 1992. In 1992-93, UMD had its finest season, advancing to the NCAA Division III Final Four. The Corsairs ranked as one of the top 10 Division III teams in the nation between the 1985-86 season and the 1987-88 campaign. UMass Dartmouth was top-ranked during the 1987-88 regular season.

A 1976 graduate of American International, Baptiste enjoyed an outstanding playing career following his gradu-ation from New Bedford High School. Earning recognition from his peers, Baptiste was formerly the chair of the Northeast Division III Men’s Basketball Selection Committee, and now represents the LEC as an National Associa-tion of Basketball Coaches Congressman.

AssistanT coaches

Len Desautels is the voice of experience. When he speaks, everybody listens. The veteran of the men’s basketball coaching staff, Desautels returns for his 20th season as Brian Baptiste’s top assistant coach.

Desautels has an extensive coaching background. He coached high school basketball in Bloomfield, Connecticut before moving to Cape Cod, where he was the head boys’ basketball coach at Bourne High School for nine seasons before joining the Corsairs.Several years ago, he served as an assistant coach for the Boston Frenzy of the American Basketball Association while they were based at UMass Dartmouth.

A 1967 graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Desautels earned his bachelor’s degree in social studies and a master’s degree from CCSU in 1971.

Team History
